Software News   Software News : NetSurf 3.6 web browser released!
   posted by Chris_Y on 20-Nov-2016 14:45:24 (5228 reads)
NetSurf is a small fast web browser for AmigaOS and other platforms.

NetSurf 3.6 is primarily a bugfix release. It contains several fixes and clean-ups to front end code, as well as supercookie blocking, and certificate chain handling improvements. We recommend all users upgrade to NetSurf 3.6.

Download AmigaOS 4 version

There is also a preview/beta of NetSurf 3.6 for AmigaOS 3.5/9. Assistance is requested to bring this up to the standard of the OS4 build.
Download AmigaOS 3.5/9 version (pending upload approval)

@Valiant

Just assign it somewhere or install http-handler.

When trying to start Netsurf-nofpu I get "Unable to initialise the font system", and SnoopDos fails to open Fonts/DejaVuSans.tt (I guess .ttf, and that Snoopdos window is cutting off the last letter).

Obviously I dont have that font in my Fonts directory, and today I cant access Aminet it seems.
Just posting to see if its something else that would produce such a output beyond missing font...?
And where can I download this font?

You are talking about Arti's SDL / Frambuffer hack.

I haven't had that kind of font problems with Netsurf.

It would be great if my threads stopped being hijacked with talk of the SDL version. It causes enough confusion as it is, keep them separate please.

It usefull now. Memory fragmention problem is gone thanks to Olaf Barthel aka. Olsen.

It lost some speed, but Olsen things that his week old memory management system will speed up latter.

can you please stop your usual bashing mantra, disencouraging people who actually actively do a lot of stuff and that since years.

Just tested OS3 version (Reaction; WinUAE/OS3.X):
It works! Well, default fonts are ugly and rendering is sometimes broken - other than that well done.
Tabbed browsing is nice.
Downloading works.
Clipboard copy/paste works.
Resizing window works.
Loading page speed is OK.
Screen redraw and scrolling are sloooow.
There are no context menus.
Seems to be stable so far.

pavlor: With emulator you might want to turn true type fonts ON. By default it is using bitmap fonts wich are much faster with real hardware.

I don't think that rendering is "broken" but rather that it's lacking fuctions still. Some time ago it rendered lots of pages correctly but that's not the case anymore. I think that sites are using new functions that Netsurf doesn't support yet?

That said, I like Netsurf but it's falling behind. Feels a little like the Amiga browsers situation from the past, always being behind and playing catch-up.

At least the Amiga-pages displays correctly including those using CSS and it's fast compared to Odyssey so I'm glad that we have Netsurf :) .

Of the versions that I've tried I think that it's the nicest port also, the OS 4 version. I haven't tried the other version, not yet at least.

We don't support Media Queries which is resulting in sites showing the wrong version - you tend to get the mobile version rather than the desktop version. I believe this is being worked on.

That's the only major layout problem I am aware of (aside from JS-related ones). Anything else needs to be raised on the bugtracker.

@hotrod

Turn off javascript in Odyssey and watch the difference...

By rendering bugs I mean some pages aren´t displayed as good as in NetSurf/OS4 (eg. Wikipedia).

@pavlor

To be fair you need to turn off JS in NetSurf too, and I think speed differences are very configuration or hardware dependant, as NetSurf is definitely faster than Odyssey here. It's worth switching on "cache native bitmaps" as that makes a big difference, as does switching off "font anti-aliasing".

Rendering bugs could do with some screenshots and a bit more information, preferably somewhere other than this news thread (and probably not on the bugtracker if it's OS3 specific, although that's OK too)

I've tried switching javascript on/off but Netsurf is still faster.

I can post a couple of sites off the top of my head and that would be www.dn.se, www.expressen.se, www.idg.se

They used to look fine but looks horrible now. I don't know the exact reason and it was just a guess that some functions are missing, I have no idea really.

@amimaniac

Thanks!

Quick test of the SDL version:
Window resize works!
Copy/paste works.
Page scrolling is fast (speed of light in comparison to Reaction version ).
No tabs.
When I click to change address, new window opens on my MUI default screen, weird.
