Software News   Software News : 24 bit PNG icons for OS 3.5/3.9
posted by Anonymous on 19-Oct-2003 9:17:19 (10635 reads)
Elena Novaretti has produced a superb PNG icon patch for OS 3.5/3.9 which lets you use PNG icons, like those in Morph OS.

Update: For a quick comparison: MikeB's classic icons and png icons with patch installed.

Download PowerIcons.

Have tested this on a A1200 060 with Mediator and Voodoo 3 and it ran very well.

That's great. I'll have to download and try them out. Wonder if the PNG icon patch will also work under OS4? Any betatesters want to try it?

That could be what people are asking for to dress up the icon sets for OS4, at least until 4.1 and the AG2 graphics sub system are in place.

Very nice.

I'd like to see some 24bit Glowicon style icons made (obviously without the glow for the moment). Mason are you listening?

The problem I have PNG icons in general is that they tend to be overcomplex and too big.

I also really like the glowicons glow to show selected, it tends to stand out nicely. I wonder if it's possible to have an alpha glow calculated around the icons (like 3.9 icon edit does) when they are selected.

Just uploaded a screenshot of PowerIcons in action using icons from the Crystal set at www.everaldo.com

Let me know what you think...

Not in this form. OS 4's libraries use multiple jump tables. The 68k jump table only branches to the PPC one, and all PPC programs use the PPC jump table, so that patches to the 68k jump table go unnoticed by all but 68k programs.

Needless to say, Workbench is already PPC.

I suspect thought that the patch could be ported/incorporated into icon library quite easily.

It would be nice to see this functionality properly integrated into future AmigaOS releases, although personally I can wait as the foundation and various other features are IMO more important than cosmetics at this stage.

It's a nice patch to play with though. So thanks alot Elena!

It would be nice if it could be as the newer icons shown in the two screenhots provided already show how much of a difference these new icons make to the look. They look fantastic! A much cleaner look than the traditional OS3.x iconsets.

Why not? You haven't got a PNG datatype installed or something?

Not for me :)

Prolly some patch that gets in the way, magellan, birdie or something. Ohh well, not a big loss anyway.

The original one or the PNG one?

The Ram Disk icon of the first picture is from the new icon set which comes with AIAB.

The PNG one is included with Elena's download as part of the example icons.

P.S. With regard to the example pictures I disabled all background images, etc to keep the emphasis on the icons.

Its excellent. From my own experiments I know one way to massively accelerate alpha transparent objects on a true colour surface (resources permitting)...

Warp3D

I'm sure support could be added to the OS3.x version. I already emailed Elena a more detailed description I hope would be viable

@ MikeB

I usually don't have any sort of problems viewing PNG images so I don't really know where the problem is.

Just loading the URL http://webring.amigaworld.net won't work either so it might have something to do with that particular server.

I'm not using AmigaOS btw...

Edit:
When I use one of the proxies at Free Public Proxies the pictures are loading just fine...

Amigaworld.net is working without any proxies (and have been for the last few days) and I don't have any problems with any other webpages.

PNG naturally hehe, I love my glowicon RAM disk more than the AIAB one anyway, but your PNG iconset was rather tasty. As I haven't used my amiga yet, I haven't downloaded the patch and so wasn't aware it contained some nice icons to get you started.

This of course would mean we can make use of those MOS iconsets on aminet now
