What I mean by trolling is for example when you have a thread started by an user asking for help, someone replies trying to help them then 'other side opinionated users' (er... trolls) leap into the thread posting about how their system is far better, faults in the thread starters choice of OS, things that work differently (therefore badly), calling anything unreleased vapourware, wandering far off topic in their 'discussions'. generally expanding a simple 3 or 4 post thread so solve the problem into a multipage rant with the solution the thread starter needs getting lost.
This used to happen a lot when I stopped visiting Amiga.org years ago.
I only saw this from the OS4 side with the mossies ambushing the threads and have no idea if OS4 users did the same on MorphOS threads. I use the forums to read the news, get help and to help others. I have no interest in MorphOS, never used it, never wanted to. I see absolutly no point in delving into MorphOS threads and telling them how bad it's, how OS4 is far superior etc. I'm happy with OS4, it does what I need. I'm not an insecure / jealous person who has to trash the opposition to make themselves feel better. _________________ OS4 Rocks X1000 beta tester, Sam440 Flex (733)

I must admit that I read such threads in the past too, you can mention the alternatives (in case he does not know) but when you see someone has decided himself then accept it. And all that "option xyz" is superior is nonsense anyway because all platforms have advantage and disadvantages. |

Hi Everyone,
I couldn't agree more Severin. I used to have an account on Amiga.org since I have been an Amiga user since the 1980s. When I gave away my classic Amigas and moved along to the next gen Amigaones, anything I would post on amiga.org was immediately attacked. It was ridiculous. I eventually just gave up on the site, seeing that next gen Amiga user were not welcome (well, at least OS 4 users), and had my account deleted. |
I never really tried using Amiga.org for my NG interests - I don't see that as a failing of Amiga.org, its culture and strengths are in its support for Amiga hardware and 68K AmigaOS.
I moved on, but I never expected Amiga.org to move on with me.
I'd mainly stopped using A.org even before I sold off my Amigas as it had lost its friendly and supportive atmosphere, and became bogged down in facebook-style brain-dribble posts of a few egotistical nobs. Mainly I was using EAB at that point. Then came the sale, the trolling, etc, and the rest is consigned to the dustbin of history.

I am hoping that with A-Eon taking over, the site will become more open now, and if that is the case, I will join amiga.org again.

I hope it will become more supportive again (I'm not interested in nursery-school level discussions on electric cars), and a welcoming portal for those (re)discovering Amiga.
There's a helluva lot more potential in that market than there is in the Amiga>NG market, especially for Amigakit, and NG is covered well by AW.net, Amigans, Morphzone, etc. Remember that hobbyists who haven't seen an Amiga in 20 years need somewhere to find information too!
Hopefully its focus will remain on Amiga users who want to enjoy their hobby, not on trying to convert Amiga users to NG customers, rehash endless political arguements or score points. The first one is down to the new owners, the latter two are down to the community reaction.Last edited by Boot_WB on 11-Jun-2014 at 02:24 PM. Last edited by Boot_WB on 11-Jun-2014 at 02:17 PM.

That's not trolling, that's just human nature. Voicing your opinion is the exact opposite of trolling, even if it drives your opponent mad all the same in some cases. You're using the (bogus) 21st-century-Amiga-related-website definition of 'troll' - which is basically: "I don't like what you say or do".
amiga.org does have quite a few trolls - but none of them are specifically anti-OS4. They're just trolls. Yesterday, somebody posted that "only left wing socialist radicalists" (quoting from memory) would have a problem with a.org's new ownership - that is trolling. Or the guy who racks up postings like no other, but hasn't posted anything Amiga related in ages... Or basically everything the previous owner and his imaginary friend posted over there.

He does have a point Olaf, you tend to write a lot of short postings when you're taking part in a discussion. I can see how some people perceive that as repetitive flooding and come to the conclusion you're hurting the topic. I know that's not your intention, I'm just saying some people might see it that way. |

Which is all well and good in an isolated case. But what happens is almost every single thread mentioning OS4 gets derailed and descends into the same bickering, how the mistake was not picking MorphOS or AROS instead, because it runs on cheaper hardware, has x and y benchmarks, is more reliable, more what the Amiga should have been, etc. etc. Nothing was simply left alone, a dig always had to be got in. Whether it's called trolling or not, it's antisocial and dispiriting, and when it's relentless and coupled with passive acceptance by the rest of the site, it can only drive away users._________________ RobTheNerd.com | InstallerGen | SMBMounter | Atoms-X |

Maybe that's because OS4 and the related parties don't ever change anything for the better? Their communication gets worse every year, the hardware prices go up (and that's saying it mildly) the hardware gets less driver support with each cycle, and customer support is usually interpreted as "the customer should support us" these days.
I know how you feel - I felt the same way when I was still using OS4 - I used to growl when I saw certain people where online, because I knew the next "x86 ftw" flamewar was about to get started.
But how do you expect the complaints to go away, if the problems actually get bigger? Take Timberwolf as an example - the two guys who did not port that properly and still got paid for it, are now getting paid to port LibreOffice - and everybody's like "hey, that's nice". What kind of reaction would you deem appropriate in that case?

I have no problem with people voicing their opinions even if they are totally opposed to mine. What I do object to is behaviour where you see the same users posting the same arguments about how there's is better in every thread they can.
A good arguement on the forums is excellent and often very enjoyable but users that deliberatly post anti-whatever-the-thread-is-about just to stir up trouble are what I call trolls, they delight in childish playground style arguments and are the reason I left._________________ OS4 Rocks X1000 beta tester, Sam440 Flex (733)

I agree, this is starting to go round in circles and is not adding anything to the conversation about the change in ownership of A.org.
Specifically, getting upset and adding personal insults, when you do not agree with someones opinion that is opposite to yours is not permitted here. If you must continue this off topic direction of the conversation, take it to PM, or email._________________ Amiga! | @Thread,
Have been a member of Aorg since 02-2002 and even before they changed and lost all old info. Stopped going there for a while but still check once in a while.
I welcome the change and hope it gets some "polish". Would be some fresh air.
Chris

Same here. Time will tell if amiga.org once again will be a place worth more visits.
(surely the optimal would be if one place could fit for everyone... but perhaps Amiga fans are too colourfull bunch for that) Last edited by KimmoK on 12-Jun-2014 at 05:57 AM.

| I wonder who owns the superb logo of amiga.org? (the logo alone is worth something on our niche)
