Will OS4 handle the new Daylight Savings Time schedule?

I have just found out today that the Daylight Savings Time will take place on another date for the US. I am wondering if OS4 knows about the change and if it will properly update it's clock?

@nzv58l

To my knowledge, Canada will also make the same changes in order to be in sync with the American markets.

@elatour

I just found out at work here, so I thought I would make everyone aware of it.

I can run a test on my Amiga, but I won't be using it tonight so it will take me a bit before I can play with it.

They are saying it may cause more impact than the Y2K scare.

Personally I never liked Daylight Savings Time.

@nzv58l

I also read on Microsoft's site that parts of Australia were making changes this time round, so wonder if that will work too.

@nzv58l
It is just a simple AmigaOS file update whenever some government changes its mind. You worry too much.

@nzv58l

I just took a look at the Time Zone tab in the Locale prefs. It states that the next time zone change is April 1, 2007 which is the old, wrong way.

@ssolie
Considering our (nzv58l and mine) government "changed its mind" quite a while ago, I hope that simple file update shows up sometime in the next six weeks. Otherwise, I'm going to have to pretend to live in Chicago for a month.

The Western Australian government introduced a 3 year trial of Day Light Saving on the 3rd of December last year, to be followed by a referendum... so how easy is it change this file (end user changable)? It would be nice to shift my A1 back to the timezone its supposed to be in.

I'm not the lucky owner of an AOS4 system (yet), but I'm curious to know: Does OS4.0 make use of a (long) TZ environment variable ?

@AmigaPhil

No, there is a TZONE string environment variable.

@thread:

You can alter the settings for your country in LOCALE:Timezones/yourcountry.timezone

Thanks Tony! Copied the appropriate rule to the WST timezone, saved, opened Locale prefs, adjusted, saved... and sweet!

Cheers!

Edit: Couldn't make much sense of the rule however.

Darnit! Here I thought Hyperion would need to give us another update before March (underlying motive). Now all I need to do is update some settings. Dang! Amiga OS is too good!

As far as who was saying what, it is just from the rumor mill. I work in the IT field, so I overhear things all the time. Personally I dont think it will be much of a problem as everyone seems to be aware of it, but I am sure some things will happen.

OK! I edited my Locale/Timezones/United States.timezone, now what do I change?

I see my timezone and I see the TZ key and the Rule sayse M4.1.0/2,M10.5.0/2.

So I change this to:

M3.11.0/2,M11.25.0/2

I take it that M3.11 would be March 11th I am not sure what the 0/2 is though. Does someone have a decoder ring for this stuff?

So I change this to:

M3.11.0/2,M11.25.0/2

I did a little playing. M3.11.0/2 got me March 25. I set it to M3.2.0/2 and got March 11. I think the second number is the week. I'd guess the third number is day of the week. The /2 is probably the time the change occurs (24-hour format?).

Oh, and DST ends the first Sunday of November, not the last. That makes my string look like:

M3.2.0/2,M11.1.0/2

I hope that's right.

Is this variable created by the system ? (Time tool ?)
What is the format used ?
Is there documentation describing the format used for timezone / DST rule in OS4.0 ?
Can whatever use LOCALE:Timezones/yourcountry.timezone parse more than one string format ?

What is the new rule? I'd like to change the internal rule in FACTS.

What I discovered:
In the LOCALE:Timezones/ drawer are multiple XML files. Each file is for a different country, with the name -countryname-.timezone (e.g. Argentina.timezone). Inside the XML file is an array of < dict > entries for each timezone within that country, with each entry having its own TZONE string.

edit - Let's use Amiga terminology for directories

Why can't you just set your clock from the net, via a
time server, works every time.
