So, am I the first one?

Yesterday in the late evening, I started to install AmigaOS4 on my classic Amiga4000 (604e/060 - 233/50Mhz, MediatorPCI, Voodoo4500).

Well, I nearly succeeded ..

First, I switched to CyperstromPPC-Early-Startupmenue and disabled "Map Rom" and made my CDrom drive bootable (SCSI Pioneer Slotin drive) and swtiched from 60ns to 70ns RAM (why? This told me the manual, but actually, I don't know why i have to slow down RAM).

Then I tried to boot from AOS4 Installation CD. This didn't work. A requester told me something like "c:bootloader no such command".

Then I tried to start the AmigaOS4 installer from my OS3.9 installation (as suggested in the manual). After clicking on the icon, a window opens which asks if i want to map the OS4 kickstart to ram and then want to reboot. After pressing "Y", I got an error message, something like "bootloader failed to load kickstart/rom". The window disapeared very fast so i cant exactly tell you the exact error message.

Then, I tried to boot from floppy disk. This first seem to work, but then a requester told me that the device SS0: wasn't a DOS disk. After switching into the OS4 Early Startup Menue, I saw, that my Pioneer CDRom wasn't recogniced at all as a CDRom drive (and thus couldn't boot from it).

After installing a second very old SCSI DVD-Ram Devcie which also can function as as CDRom device, I tried to install AOS4 from floppy disc again and it worked! I could install AmigaOS 4 on my UW-SCSI harddisk SI1: (freshly formated with FFS+Longnames as suggested in the manual)

After the end of the Installation, I turned of my Amiga, removed the floopy disc and AOS4 CD and then, I rebooted. Unfortunately, a requester poped up and told me that the device SI1: is not a DOS Disk and refused to boot. :(

Then i was tiered and I stopped to find out what the problem was.

Conclusion:
1) Some CDRom drives (even though more or less new ones) are not able to boot the AOS4 CD
2) AOS4 works on AmigaPPC with Voodoo4500 (as the installer is completly executed on an AOS4 system).
3) Unfortunatly, even the installation went fine, I couldnt boot from the installed system.


This evening, I'll try to find out what the problem is ..

P.S. "SS0:" is my OS3.9 Installation. I installed AOS4 on a second harddrive, on the second partition SI1: (800MB in sze). The device SI0: (200MB in size) contains a backup of OS3.9. Is it possible that AOS4 must be installed on the first partition of an harddisk?

The printed manual should explain that you have to install the 68k Version of FastFileSystem
to the RDB of your harddisk, with DosType DOS\7. Otherwise when booting from the
ROM kickstart the partition cant be used and is reported as non-DOS disk.

Simply adding the filesystem to the RDB should do the trick, no complete re-installation
needed.

As far as I can remeber, the manual only says something like: "FileSystem with long filenames support is need for the boot partition"

I do have installed DOS/7 (as this is FFS + long filename support).
DOS/3 is FFS (international?) without long filenames support.

But i wrote FFS & SFS from the OS4 CD to the RDB of my harddisk.

I'll check it this evening.

By the way, does this mean, that there's no possibilitie to have a PPC Filesystem for the bootpartition which contains the OS? Isn't OS4 damned by that to only be able to slowly load system parts like libraries?

You must specify DOS/7 as DosType of the OS4 boot partition AND as DosType of
the 68k FastFileSystem which you stored in the RDB. Or use SFS for both.

When the 68k BootLoader loads OS4 it uses the 68k filesystem from the RDB.
When OS4 starts, it uses the PPC filesystem from SYS:Kickstart/.
Yes, it can use 68k filesystems from RDB too, but it prefers the PPC filesystem
when available.

Perhaps I have read over that section in the manual to quickly or i misunderstood it (if it was there at all :) ) but I'm sure due to your help it will be easy to "fix" my os4 installlation problem :)

I can confirm that id you have not set up the partition as DOS/7 then you will experienec the problem you described.

As a beta tester I was installing OS4.0 on another A4000D (I already had OS4.0 installed on my A4000T) and I got the "not a DOS disk" error on reboot after an apparently successful installation. I discovered that I has not set up the OS4.0 partition correctly.

I used a HDD that was already partitioned with several working DOS/3 partitions and OS3.9 installed. I decided to install OS4.0 on a spare partition and selected long file names which seems to produce a DOS/7 partition. You also need to edit the DOS Type from 444f5303 by changing the last number from 3 to 7 to give 444f5307.

Obviously you must make the drive bootable and save the changes back to the drive. (I may have missed this step?) The boot priority must be higher than the OS3.9 boot partition. Once the partition has been formatted (using QUICK) I was able to install OS4.0 and it worked fine on the reboot. I've also noticed that if I want to boot from the OS3.9 partition rather than OS4.0 you have to change the boot priority of the partition for this to work (rather than selecting the partition in the Amiga early startup sequence).

Received package today (well done AmigaKit !!) and have just installed on my A1200. Quite a lengthy process and a few gremlins with media toolbox (possible down to hard drive) but finally got underway. Selecting a template solved the earlier problem with dos types.

So OS4 is now up and running but cannot seem to select my voodoo graphics card at present despite that being present in devs/monitors. I'm sure there is a simple solution to this !!
