| I had an external USB harddrive for my Win-laptop, but their internal controller has failed and I've mounted this in the SAM440ep+AmigaOS4.1. With some work done, the system recognized and read the harddrive using the NTFileSystem, but as I want a harddrive with read AND WRITE features, I've changed their format (Windows XP + Partition Magic) to FAT32... sadly, the system can't recognize now the disk correctly (the disk seems recognizes, the diskname and their tree is garbage). Here is the DOS Driver file what I used based over Dirk Heismann's sample (I accept suggestions, but the device, unit and lowcyl -dummy argument for an automatic detection- fields seems correct :)...
FileSystem = L:CrossDOSFileSystem Device = sii3114ide.device Priority = 5 Unit = 2 Flags = 0 Surfaces = 1 BlocksPerTrack = 83 Reserved = 1 Interleave = 0 LowCyl = 0 HighCyl = 3071 StackSize = 16384 Buffers = 256 BufMemType = 0 Mount = 1 GlobVec = -1 DosType = 0x4D534800 /* 0x4D534800 = MSH0 (H=Hard disk?) */ /* Mask = 0x00FFFFFE */ /* depends on the device you use: */ /* MaxTransfer = 0x00FFFFFF */

| The original diskname was "WinUAE", but now under AmigaOS4.1 shows "TVY$". With "dir >ram:list.txt PCC:" this is the result (includes control codes as clear screen or beep):

Some bug in the filesystem on os4.1. I hope a fix will come in next update. I have the same problem all the time. Its only on my miggy and it goes me on my nerves totally as first the speed is sooooo slow and finally when you think everything is ok then you see corrupted tree and then you have to quickformat the stick which also takes alot of time. My nerves have been much better before but lately i have been using usb more and more as my pc mates uses usb sticks rather then cd/dvd's and i would also rather use it but............. |

OS4.1's CrossDOS doesn't support FAT32 partitions larger than 128GB, so try with a smaller one. It works with my external USB hard disk-, using 120GB partitions.

I don't think tis is the problem : I have a 4 Gb stick, which works very well on my A1 but gives the same garbage on my SAM ! |

AFAIK OS4's Media Toolbox doesn't support MBR formatted disks, so you'll have to use a PC (or cfdisk on Linux on an A1/Sam).

Well, I have done some tests with my external hard disk and every partition >128GB was shown with garbage in the root dir. Which makes sense since AFAIK all the other Amiga filesystems (FFS, SFS) have a 128GB limit too, except JXFS.

And what are the size of the files (big gb each surely).
@all
With AOS4.1 and SAM, FAT32 medias not recognized or if working sooner or later have this problem. I have this problem so often that I use my classic to use FAT32 USB media with poseidon and a spider2 and even the copy have better speed on the classic.
For sure, USB will be corrected when a new version of AOS4.1 will be released but I can't understand for this point a quick fix can't be made !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You can format to FAT32 with AOS4.1 with ctrl+alt+E (I don't remember exactly).

Interesting... I can't check today, but I will try reduce the PC partition the next days (the HD has 160 GB) and I will inform about this here. |

The FFS readme from SYS:Documentation says that there is no 128 GB partition limit for FFS. Quote:
3.2.6 Size limitations
The smallest unit the file system can access is the sector, as provided by the underlying device driver. Up to 2^32 sectors can be used, which with a sector size of 512 bytes yields a maximum partition size of about 2.2 Terabytes.
|
And you missed SFS2: Quote:
Supports partitions of up to 128 GB (DOSType 'SFS\0', for 'SFS\2' partitions the limit is 1 TB, but it can be more depending on the blocksize, with 32KB/Block it's 64 TB).

I've had similar problems, not only with FAT16/32 disks, but also with removable media formatted as FFS under 3.x. See the thread...
http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=28687&forum=34#489431
To sum up the unresoved problems on that thread...
1) Zip disks formatted as FAT by either Iomega or Windows (98 - XP) are recognized by Windows and Ubunu, but not AmigaOS 4.1. This is strange because they were recognized under OS4.0 final using ZIC. ZIC has not changed, but CROSSDOS has. 2) Zip disks formatted as FAT by AmigaOS3.x to 4.0 are recognized by Windows, but not Ubuntu and AmigaOS4.1. 3) Zip disks formatted as FFS under AmigaOS3.x to OS4.0 are not recognized by OS4.1. What's up with that? Both mountlists for ZIC and ZIP have not changed. Has FFS and CROSSDOS changed so much that anything formatted before OS4.1 is useless? 4) I've tried Giggledisk to mount my FFS and FAT Zip disks; however, Giggledisk returns a mountfile without any filesystem. 5) USB flash drive (256MB) formatted as FAT under Windows is recognized by both AmigaOS4.1 and Ubuntu, but is read-only under Ubuntu. 6) USB flash drive formatted as FAT under Ubuntu is recognized by Ubuntu, but not AmigaOS 4.1 or Windows. 7) USB flash drive formatted as FAT under AmigaOS4.1 is not automounted by Ubuntu. It must be mounted via sudo mount in a terminal.
Any hints, or do I have to wait for another Quickfix? Last edited by PhantomInterrogative on 13-Oct-2009 at 02:04 PM.

As usually, It's not possible to know if AOS4 team know this problem and if It is allready resolved or not.
I have myself the same problem lots of time (and afraid to put something with FAT32 on the SAM).
The only possibility is to pray god that the AOS4 team has resolved the problem for the next AOS4 release
As apparently, AOS4 team not want to make a quickfix for this verry damaged problem with AOS4 !!!!!_________________ BTW, what you have done for the amiga today ????

I can deal with OS4.1's inability to read FAT ZIP disks for now. What I really need right now is access to my OS3.x-4.0 FFS formatted ZIP disks, which OS4.1 does not recognize.
Perhaps if I were to put a copy of an earlier FFS in the L: drawer, renaming it to avoid conflicts, and using it in the ZIP mountlist, then I would have working FFS Zip disks?
Perhaps I could boot from my OS4.0 final (or even a prerelease) CDROM. After booting OS4, I could read the disks, transferring the files to other media.

Having just read the ACube compatability site, I just figured out why OS4.1 was not reading FFS, FAT16, FAT32, or any Zip disks whatsoever. Iomega drives need their interrupt turned off through IDEtool.
I can't wait to get home to try this out and access the files that I have not been able to access since December!

It seems like there are compatibility issues across different operating systems and versions when it comes to recognizing various file system formats on removable media such as Zip disks. The changes between AmigaOS3.x/4.0, FAT16/32, and FFS might be causing these inconsistencies in recognition capabilities. |
