Linux on AmigaOS4... is it possible?

I think it would be cool to be able to run GNU/Linux or another Unix compatible OS on an emulator...

But what would be the best emulator?
And does any of these run on AmigaOS4?

bochs - IA32 emulator - can use SDL
SheepShaver - PowerMac emulator
SheepShaver - PowerMac emulator - can use SDL
(SheepShaver is making use of the Basilisk II source code - Basilisk II, Basilisk II JIT)

PS: SheepShaver might be able to use the PowerPC processor of the AmigaOne

@hnl_dk

Why emulate Linux? You can run the real thing. As for emulators, most of them will not fly high as they are moslty legacy emulators used to play with nostalia stuff or testing bootstraps.

I am running Linux, but I would like to be able to run both at once... and this on the same computer

I suppose to allow work withing the native AmigaOS4 environment at the same time. Then again, I'd use my PC as a linux box and VNC into it when I needed.

True, but some are pretty well developed and fast.

quick edit: quote tag fix

Better than emulating in this way i was thinking time ago if it will be possible to make any sort of wine like emulator to run linux apps in amigaos.In the pc are wine for run windows apps on linux and another program that i not remember the name for run linux apps on windows.IT´s not possible to make the same to run linux apps on AmigaOS??

For pc there are also Qemu and vmware (may be i mistaken the names?) for run various OS at the same time in the same machine there are or could be made anything similar for amigaone?

@hnl_dk

Well, you "only" need to write a Linux kernel which uses AmigaOS system calls instead of banging the hardware. Shouldn't be much slower than the real thing and you could switch to AmigaOS by LAmiga-M.

Bye,
Thomas

@Samurai_Crow

Another that is similar to User Mode Linux but is written for Windows is Cooperative Linux. Here's the link.

So I figure it should actually be possible to do it, but would take a LOT of work to get it functioning. From what I've read, it appears it needs a LOT of difficult to do programming so that the two operating systems can work side-by-side at the same time.

That is why I would like to make it run within an emulator

BasiliskII is already working natively on OS4 (native Picasso96 build) on my CSPPC and a friend's microA1

32bit and monochrome modes work correctly, I need to do some byteswapping to fix 8bit and 16bit ones and also finish the Reaction GUI (it still doesn't save the config and I need to fix other issues)

SheepShaver is more complex and requires the use of MMU to remap the rom and the memory area used by macos to store variables (remember prepareemul?)

The code of SheepShaver is too unixified because Gwenole hasn't taken care of maintaining the BeOS version and he has introduced custom platform code (for unix) in the code that should be platform-agnostic.

@hnl_dk

I would say that porting MacOnLinux would be the best bet here no?

I rather suspect you'd need to have per-process address spaces to make this work. In AmigaOS, processes share the same address space.

Cheers,
Rich

I think a nice way to run Linux on AmigaOS would be like coLinux is running on Windows:

if someone would port qemu on amigaos4, then you would have something that could run win98 and macos (plus amigaos4).

more infor here : http://fabrice.bellard.free.fr/qemu/

Running linux on AmigaOS is like putting mustard on your pancakes.

You *could* do it... but why would you want to??

Get a cheap x86 setup and a kvm switch. Problem solved.

Maybe so that you don't need to buy

Why people had bought Fusion in the past, then...

@evilrich

User Mode Linux, turns your Linux kernel into a Linux program, the idea is that if you have Linux on Linux you develop and improve the Linux kernel whit out rebooting, there are maybe some other areas where this can be nice to do, butt I have not found any usage for it.

It’s possible to adapt a Linux kernel to run on different system like AmigaOS, and live of the Amiga drivers, sub systems, butt I think its lots of work to get it working.
