Only the Amiga makes it possible!

But if you have a real Amiga then it came with AmigaOS from the factory, so you are only upgrading to a newer version. Microsoft not only let you do that with Windows 10, they made it happen automatically without your approval. :(

Friend Discreet FX,
the only SAGA here is the unfortunate one of AmigaOS.

Hyperion "settling" should mark the complete, unrestrained freedom of 3.x,
not a passing of hands from those sewage dwellers to italian sleazebags who, as our other friend up there correctly pointed out, contributed to Amiga nothing but a "ui to launch an emulator".

FRIENDS!!! COMRADES IN AMIGA I CALL YOU TO ACTION:
I understand some of you may have been somewhat intimidated by the figure of "a belgian lawyer".
Now you are facing a scrawny md doctor from a small town in Italy: WILL YOU STILL QUIETLY SUBMIT?
WILL YOU STILL LEAVE THAT 3.1 SOURCE CODE FOLDER OUT OF YOUR TORRENT CLIENT SHARING?

THE TIME HAS COME

Every couple of years I take a cycling vacation in Europe. This time I was headed west out of Cologne and stopped in a town bordering Netherlands to pick up something for dinner. At a supermarket I spotted him. Bald, he looked like like a mustachioed dick head wearing wire-rimmed glasses, wearing a dirty apron and pushing a mop bucket toward the back of the store.

As I continued my shopping I noticed him down a hallway mopping up after an overflowed toilet, his back towards me. Was it him? I tentatively called out, "Hans!" The figure stopped mopping, stiffened, and turned his head slightly, just enough to see the tip of his mustache. I continued "Hyperion settled. It's over." I did not wait for a reaction as I headed to the checkout.

Back outside I stored my dinner in the trunk bag and pedaled off towards the rear of the store. That's when I saw in a parking spot a battered red mid-90s Honda Civic, a boing ball air freshener hanging from the windshield, a faded "Multi-Core Or Bust!" sticker haphazardly placed on the driver's door. Inside was Hans, slumped over with one arm on top of the steering wheel, sobbing loudly, his other arm stretched out over the dash holding a cigarette. A slow column of smoke twisted up to form a cloud below the headliner.

For a moment I watched, adjusted my helmet strap, then clipped in and pedaled away. I might have also chuckled a little.

What a blast from the past!

I might have stolen your "*golf clap*" line from Amiga.org and used it a few times.

Please don't sue me.

Maybe one of these guys?

Maybe Trevor did not bring enough boards to keep Hans out of the supermarket. Game over?

Thanks. That clarifies it, LOL.

Is there a reason someone should have it in for the Frieden brothers?

When such a comment comes from an old timer, part of it is directly related to the fact that when this all started Hans-Joerg (and Thomas to a lessor degree) were forced into becoming the voice of Hyperion on the forums.
This was not a job they relished. You could argue that disagreements with Hyperion wrongly fell on their shoulders to indulge in, instead of management at the time.

Make sense?

There is plenty of politics and division in Amiga development like there is in the Amiga community. Sometimes developers are even attacked within camps/factions. In my experience, Amiga developers being attacked is not uncommon and can be much worse than the swipe above. I expect attacks to be part of the reason why some Amiga developers stopped developing. I stopped all Amiga development after Gunnar's goons attacked me on EAB and got me banned. Well, I guess I left the Apollo team too as I found out I was kicked out from the attackers for "sabotaging" the team. Fellow team member Philippe "Meynaf" Guichardon had stubborn disagreements with Gunnar and was also accused of sabotage while I was generally more neutral but stood my ground where needed. I guess I was not loyal enough for Gunnar either. The Vamp/Apollo camp is like a cult although other camps could be considered cult like also. Even Igor "Majsta" Majstorovic, who coined the Vampire name with his A600 FPGA accelerator that attached to the 68000 like teeth, unceremoniously left or was forced out of the team when he was no longer useful. I had convinced Gunnar to help him but we rarely communicated and I do not expect that made a difference. This is just how Gunnar abuses, uses and discards developers. There are other mental cases too as most of the sane pragmatic Amiga developers gave up and left the Amiga long ago.

At least Majsta has not sued but you can't get blood from a turnip.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:You_can%27t_squeeze_blood_from_a_turnip

Too bad Ben Hermans did not understood that there are more valuable markets for his lawfare than the Amiga market. Even Trevor did not invest enough or efficiently enough in the Amiga market to make it profitable and sustainable. Ben is another good example of mental cases left in the Amiga market. There are still people seeking their precious instead of working together for the good of the Amiga.

Most developers moved on, but that doesn't mean much. To put food on the table you have to go where the market is. For 20 years I didn't know anyone else who had an Amiga. I even threw away a working A600 and a couple of CD32's because I thought they weren't worth anything.

Ironically the continuing value of Amiga IP makes it vulnerable to this. However on balance I think we are winning. I don't mind people seeking their 'precious' so long as they make products using it that we can buy. If you don't want to buy then create your own stuff. Nobody can stop you.

What's that you say, making my own stuff is too hard? In that case you shouldn't complain. For example I have a V2 Vampire in my A600. Gunnar says the FPGA is too full to include an MMU. Fair enough, V4 is the thing now and V2 is just on maintenance. Gunnar won't release the V2 source code, but that doesn't bother me because I wouldn't know what to do with it anyway.

I'm thinking of making a hardware MMU to protect low memory and catch bad writes and reads. It shouldn't be hard to make with a few logic gates, and could be used on any Amiga including those with a 68000. This is copyright law in action, spurring innovation. You can be reassured that anything I develop will be fully open and not precious to me.

Right. For awhile after Commodore failed, it looked like there was no money in the Amiga and the hardware was headed to a value that was trash. Now that the Amiga is retro and retro is a hot market, the aging hardware is collectable and it is possible to make a profit in the Amiga market but the user base is not large enough to be sustainable. There is potential to expand the Amiga user base with much more competitive hardware but it requires capital investment. Trevor tried investing in the AmigaOS for the desktop where it was about as competitive as the PPC embedded hardware for the desktop he used. It takes less capital investment for retro, hobby, embedded, educational market hardware but fat PPC sabotaged that despite using PPC embedded SoCs, with CPU cores which removed PPC standard load/store multiple register instructions from hardware. RISC-V recently added these instructions and many more new embedded extensions to reach a code size they claim is ~5% larger than Thumb-2 while PPC code is ~50% larger than Thumb-2 code.

HW/SW approaches for RISC-V code size reduction
https://carrv.github.io/2020/papers/CARRV2020_paper_12_Perotti.pdf Quote:

The enhanced CV32E40P core hits a sweet spot for code density as well as boosted performance, with a code size just 5.37% larger than the ARM Thumb2 code, a core area increasing of only 2.5%, and no impact on the operating frequency, therefore maintaining the 10x boost for DSP applications.

Motorola/Freescale/NXP found out how to go from having the #1 32-bit embedded architecture 68k, with Thumb-2 like 68k code density, to licensing and paying royalties to their competitor ARM. Ignoring code density for the embedded market is a good way to commit financial suicide and Trevor drank their financial suicide Kool-Aid.

Too often, Amiga related camps/factions deliberately buy and remove IP from the market to deny competing camps. Sometimes the problem is gouging, manipulation and intimidation too. This forces other camps to waste time reinventing the wheel. A good example of the result is that no businesses used the newest Hyperion version of the 68k AmigaOS in their products including Vamp/Apollo, AmigaKit (A600GS), RGL (THEA500 Mini & THEA1200) and Cloanto (Amiga Forever). Most users would likely prefer the newer AmigaOS and it is at least available. Other Amiga products like Warp3D and Cybergraphics are removed from the largest 68k Amiga market.

The early Vamp FPGAs were too small for a full Apollo core. We tried to get Majsta to upgrade the FPGA but he wanted to keep it cheap and he is stubborn. Gunnar worked hard to squeeze in as much as he did. Something needs to be removed to be able to add something else. The newer Vamp/Apollo FPGAs are close to the size of the MiSTer FPGA which does not have a pipeline 68k CPU, FPU or MMU.

Many remaining Amiga developers work on small projects themselves. Large projects require devs working together and the Natami/Apollo project is a good example. Developing a 68k SoC in a FPGA is the right way to develop a 68k SoC and there are/were devs involved with experience in doing this. This is what makes the project so frustrating that it has been sabotaged and not by Meynaf or me.

So anyone have thoughts on directions for C programming in AmigaOS land with this news in mind? OS3/OS4/Aros and OpenGL/libSDL1/2?

@davidf215

C/C++ with SDL2 is available on all AmigaNG platforms (AOS4, MOS, AROS) OpenGL or 3D under SDL might be a problem.

Keep in mind SDL performs badly under ECS/AGA and I don't know if it supports P96/CGX

@OneTimer1

Thanks for the tips! I did see that SDL2 is on AOS4 and Aros, so I've been thinking of going that direction.

I was thinking of not using SDL on Amiga but I'm not familiar enough with loading and blitting PNG files and loading and playing mp3 files in Amiga libraries, and after looking at my code, there's more SDL functions that I use than I realized--use of TTF, PollEvent, and Threads.

I tried to get OpenGL working on AOS4 but I'm getting OpenGL initialization errors when running simple OpenGL apps from os4depot--something wrong in my emulation settings, I guess.
