I compared component and HDMI output on PS3 and saw no difference, so I don't think that necessarily makes HDMI very desirable. |
This varies from TV set to TV set, quite a few people notice clear differences.

Being able to output video and sound through one cable and in all-digital is very nice though. |
And becomes more of a requirement as time goes on. Also note that HDMI 1.3 has double the bandwidth of HDMI 1.2 [XBox 360 Elite], this will mostly be beneficial with later complex 1080p games supporting 7.1 Audio, so HDMI 1.2 may be more than sufficient for the XBox 360.

I actually hope that Trezzer would go and pick up a PS3 so we could start hearing more experiences on comparing these systems. |
I agree that would help somewhat, but IMO he's pretty stubborn even if he will be proven wrong on many occasions in the future. I will be surprized if at some point he did apologize to me for insulting me even on various occasions regarding things even PS3 game design experts agree on.Last edited by MikeB on 05-Apr-2007 at 11:42 AM. | As of the 1st of April, according to VGChartz 846,129 PS3s have been sold in Japan vs 367,093 XBox 360 which has a year headstart. Total PS3 software sales now outnumber the XBox 360 software sales as well.
I estimate by the time major Japanese blockbusters Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Final Fantasy XIII have been released the PS3 will have sold roughly 1.2 to 1.4 million PS3s and the XBox 360 will have an installed base of a little less than half a million. By then I expect the gap to widen more quickly.

I think it's also worth noting that although the PS2 has been perfoming weak in terms of hardware sales for Japan, as compared to the rest of the world, software sales this week just like last week's figures are nearly 4 times the amount of software sold for the Nintendo Wii, the PS2's main competitor for the lowend market.
So just some food for though for people dissing the PS2 as not being a major factor within the gaming industy anymore (so unlike the Nintendo GameCube and original Microsoft XBox).
With regard to Australia, PS3 sales have been decent but not great like was the case for Europe, selling 27,083 PlayStation 3 consoles in ten days. Though with regard to Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD player install base Blu-Ray players now outnumber HD-DVD player more than forty-fold, so IMO not strange Australia's largest DVD retailer decided to not stock HD-DVD movies.Last edited by MikeB on 05-Apr-2007 at 11:20 AM.

If you truly believe I didn't provide enough context, this is a forum so you can add any context yourself, in any case I am not going to quote the whole thread here.
To me it seems you are already back-paddling while shifting your standpoint somewhat and for the future I think this will shift even further, so 1080p PS3 games won't look weak? In fact I think some 1080p PS3 games will be amongst the visually most stunning games we have ever seen so far for both dedicated gaming platforms, as well as for the PC.Last edited by MikeB on 05-Apr-2007 at 11:38 AM.

| I've read through this whole thread and I'm still thinking I have a headache and PS3>Xbox 360.
Some stats showing sales in the US of recent consoles for the first 4 months of their release.

PS3 will eventually win this war. Again they are somewhat misleading. PS3 didn't have limited supply after the first few weeks - most (if not all) of the others did.
It's interesting how many Wiis have sold considering that they are still extremely hard to find. It looks like we have the real winner of the new consoles there - even if it may only be for the short term.Last edited by Trezzer on 05-Apr-2007 at 11:52 AM.

Here I am wondering why Sony delayed the release of the PS3 in Australia and Europe.... _________________ Amiga 4000 CSPPC [retired] Intel i7 3930K @ 4.3Ghz / Corsair H100 / Asus Rampage IV Extreme / 16 GB / 2 x 240GB Corsair Force GT SSD / 2 x EVGA 2GB 680GTX SC Sig / 3 x Benq XL2420T 27" iMac / i7 @ 3.4 / 680mx / 3TB Fusion / 32GB RAM |

Because at the time of the actual launch supplies were severely limited?
It was around Christmas when machines were starting to sit around in stores and Ebay scalpers met real life supply and demand.
I guess, though, that the decision to move it to March instead of doing it earlier must have had to do with removing the Emotion Engine and making sure that ran well enough, rather than having enough supplies, because as we can see from sales numbers the initial launch shipment to Europe hasn't sold out yet. |

If we want to address misleading I will refer to the expected PS3 sales drop leaked from Chart Track, the data alledgedly supporting your "worries". Here some thought from Chart Track themselves:
Stat-cruncher Chart-Track has told Next-Gen that it's "meaningless" to draw conclusions about PlayStation 3's performance based on a second-week sales drop.
Company director Dorian Bloch told Next-Gen, "A figure of an 82% drop has leaked out but that alone means nothing. Given how much pent up demand there was for PS3 and given the sophistication of pre-order systems now, it really doesn't mean anything."
So over 200K PS3s for the UK in 2 weeks time!
Surprisingly to me, due to Resistance's top position on various large European country's charts (UK, Spain, Italy) it comes to me as a surprise Motorstorm overall took the number 1 spot for Europe as a whole, with Resistance placed at a strong second! I wonder if this will be the case globally in terms of total sales as well, for Japan Resistance wins hands down due to an inferior early version of Motorstorm without online play, it will be interesting to see how well Motorstorm performed in North America.Last edited by MikeB on 05-Apr-2007 at 12:21 PM.

Read Chart Track's response which are more or less the experts on this matter and you will notice, their comments does not support your comments. According to them the 82% drop figure was dragged out of context by the media you were linking to. |

A fowl-mouth would say the hardware failures are the reason there were so many PS2's sold (as replacements)... but I don't think that is true. |
Well call me a fowl mouth.
Like I've stated before. Software sales show the PS2 with an active installed base of between 40 and 50 million compared to the 120 million they have shipped/sold and compared to the Gamecube's and Xbox's software sales.
The Xbox was so pirated that despite the questionably larger installed base, it had less total overall software sales that the Gamecube. The Xbox was fairly reliable but nothing did be the industrial fortitude of the Gamecube.
On anothor rant:
When I was living with my brother, I had a GC and he had a PS2 and Xbox. He spent more time in my room playing Mario Kart, F-Zero and RE4 and a few others than I did in his playing Ghost Recon...
On the PS1, N64 days, other than FF7, Destruction Derby and Xtreme Games, I spent most of my nights over my cousin's house playing Golden Eye, THQ's WWF Wrestling games and Killer Instinct Gold...
Overall, Nintendo's platforms are just more fun in groups. I play World of Warcraft all the time now and own a Wii. So I do play online, but I don't find the "online" aspect of it to be the cat's meow like Xbox Live fans make it out to be. In the end, when company is over, Nintendo is what's on the 50".
Loading times are a big part of the fun factor. Nobody wants to sit there and wait. The N64 had none save for some decompression relates delays. The GC load times only existed in rushed cross-platform titles. The Wii follows a similar path with loading times kept to a minimum.
Look at the Wii's Excite Truck title. No loading times to speak of despite HUGE tracks. I'd like to get in a room with that game and Motorstorm and see which actually is more fun in 1-player mode. |

I guess I have to correct myself on this one and go along with the experts, by stating the Australian launch was good or even very good.
"According to data trackers Gfk, this record boost was unseen at either Xbox 360 or Wii launches.
"Our data revealed that in a matter of just ten days the PlayStation 3 created a spike in retail spending not previously witnessed at the launch of any other console in Australia," said Gfk's Daniel Morse.
"This spending continued into the second week of trading, resulting in sales of 27,083 PlayStation 3 consoles in just ten days."
The all-formats game chart was also dominated by the launch of the new console, with an incredible nine out of ten spots taken up by PS3 titles - Final Fantasy XII for PS2 being the only party pooper.
Resistance: Fall of Man leads the bunch, followed closely by MotorStorm and F1. Call of Duty blasted in at fourth place, Final Fantasy XII in fifth, Need for Speed: Carbon sixth, and Ridge Racer 7 in seven, brilliantly.
Smashing faces at eight was Fight Night Round 3, followed by Virtua Fighter 5 at nine, which left the rather ace Virtua Tennis 3 rounding out the chart at number ten."
Cool. http://au.ps3.ign.com/articles/778/778530p1.htmlLast edited by MikeB on 05-Apr-2007 at 12:47 PM.
