The powerstation is still listed on the Fixstars site here it says to contact them for more information and purchases so that may be the only way to find out if they are still available. _________________

It is listed, I don't know if it is still in production: Quote:
Fixstars are probably selling the PowerStation box at a significant loss (we know because we designed the motherboard). This is just the reality of the 970 pricing and the incredibly complex board design required to support it (many weird chips, braindead design decisions by the Northbridge and CPU designers..).

From what I understand, that price was at a loss for them. They may want another $1000 if os4 was ported to it. Read that in another thread, can't remember which one._________________ Hate tends to make you look stupid... |

| I can't imagine anyone besides the console manufactures, selling hardware at a loss.

or possibly a company that makes its money selling support packages for a freely available operating system. they could make back what they lose on the hardware by selling support for the software. I have head that IBM do it on their high end servers because them make more money selling you software support for many years than they ever could just selling you the hardware. _________________

From what I have seen so far its far from proven that they do. From what I have been pointed to someone from Genesi indicated they helped design some of the board at an earlier stage for IBM. After that IBM took the rest of the work internally. Apparently the Fixstars machine is based off of that design (or maybe even is that exact design). But that does not mean costs stayed the same, or that they would ever be the same for IBM itself or the same for Genesi vs. Fixstars etc etc etc. Plus the Genesi person only said "probably" they sell it at a loss.
The pricing page (that I linked in the post before this one) hardly is pushing any services to make up any "loss" either, which is certainly notable. If its re-badged IBM equipment for instance, a sound theory could be that IBM cut their losses and sold the equipment at a loss to Fixstars. The loss may not be Fixstars then, but IBM's.Last edited by fairlanefastback on 03-Nov-2009 at 04:38 AM.

That sounds like a very likely situation._________________ Amiga! The computer that inspired so many, to accomplish so much, but has ended up in the hands of . . . . . . . . . . |

Possible, but this kind of business is totally different from selling hardware. Quote:

Tax system made it easier for companies to lease a system instead of buying them. So you ask IBM, Compaq or SUN for a Oracle databese server and they charge you 4000$ for the next five years ...
IBM even sells servers with blades or CPUs that are switched of, if the customer need more power they can activate the CPU and IBM will charge them. But I don't see fixstar in this kind of business.Last edited by Arko on 03-Nov-2009 at 09:53 AM.

While the raw price possibly is a loss, they hope to make money with the service.
To be honest, I can`t see any reason why they would charge annother 1000$ if I want to use it with OS 4.x instead of YDL.
Even Hyperion/the developers are free to buy one for 1250$ and to port OS 4.x to it.
It is up to every single customer to make use of their service offer or not. I didn`t find any hint that you have to sign an expensive service contract when you buy a PowerStation._________________ Ciao

I dont think they`re just rebadged old IBM stock.
After 2 hours of googling I could not find a hint on the web that the YDL PowerStation is an old IBM design.
All I found was a similar specced machine by IBM called "IBM IntelliStation POWER 185 Express".
Comparing the specs of the IBM IntelliStation and of the YDL PowerStation I noticed that the IBM has just 1 mB L2-cache per processor, while the YDL-PS has 1 mB L2-cache per core. So the YDL-PS has twice the amount of L2-cache than the IBM-IS.
Next difference I noticed was that the IBM can take 512MB to 8GB of 333 MHz DDR SDRAM (ECC), while the YDL-PS can take up to 32GB of 667MHz DDR2 RAM (ECC supported). This is the 4-fold of what the IBM can take at twice the speed of the IBM RAM.
Furthermore the IBM has Ultra320 SCSI and bays for three internal disk drives, while the YDL-PS has an internal 4 port SAS RAID Controller and four bays.
So I highly doubt that the YDL-PS is the (old) IBM IntelliStation - to me it rather looks as if the YDL-PS board might be a further development of that IBM board.
On the Fixstars pages they claim "Not just a simple replacement, but a well designed, ...system." - they just forget to mention who designed it.
But from my POV this does not matter - the customers have to pay for the development of the board anyway - no matter who developed it.
If IBM should have developed it, they certainly added the costs for development to the price of the board and Fixstars (former Terra Soft Solutions) have to pay the price.
And as Fixstars are no welfare organisation, they most likely pass the development costs down to their customers - anything else would equal to suicide of the company.
For me their statement "Not just a simple replacement, but a well designed, perfectly packaged, readily upgradable, and far, far, more open source friendly system." does not sound like they are just trying "to get rid of old stock (or at least not having to pay development costs)".

That's the whole point of debate: it is very unclear if Joe Average can buy just "one", their web site is not Amazon.com where you click "buy it now".
From what i gather from their web-site, they seem a corporate/enterprise focused company, so unless you are a company ordering several machines with services i strongly doubt they will sell "ONE" (a single one with no services) to Average Joe just kicking in for fun and giggles...
Anyway, Fairlanefastback says he's gonna contact them today, we may finally discover the truth this way...Last edited by DAX on 03-Nov-2009 at 02:23 PM. Last edited by DAX on 03-Nov-2009 at 01:47 PM.

I am waiting on a reply. I was clear that I was an individual buyer, not a business (their contact form even has a check box for individual buyers). I made clear I was interested in a single machine. I asked what the total would be with shipping, handling, and any tax they might apply with a shipment to NY. I also asked if they take credit cards. Lets see what they say._________________ Pegasos2 G3 running AOS 4.1 and MorphOS 2.0 Amikit user, tinkering with Icaros VM (AROS) EFIKA owner Amiga 1200 |
