How does such a small case manage to house a 'fast G4 processor' without the huge cooling systems which some people seem to be fitting to their AmigaOnes?

Yes, i hope so!

The design imho isn't ugly. You can like it or not, but the style is the classic Mac style, simple, elegant, cool. Like iMac (G4 & G5), iPod, PowerMac... Then if you don't like it, it is amatter of taste.
A 9200 is not a bad card, for a small pc like this i would be happy with a 9200.

Just to clear something up about the Warrantee question:

I called Apple today. I talked to a manager and he says Apple's "official position" with memory installation with the Mini is if you break the computer while installing the memory you aren't warrantee covered, but just putting memory in will not, in itself, void the warrantee. It would have been a deal-breaker for me.

How about a Beowulf cluster of these little babies.

One possible benefit is that there will be a few more PPC boxes out there. More people might realise that clock speed isn't everything. When average Joe public see that a 1.2 Ghz machine can surf the web just as good as an Intel or AMD 3+ Ghz based one they might be surprised.

Also maybe bringing PPC to the masses will bring down the price of the chips. It might actually be a good thing for us but only time will tell.

@BukkY

One may have to beef up the interconnects between the nodes.

The average Joe already know this with Pentium M based laptops.

@RedMelons

Because this is the next generation PPC 74xx, which is a LOT easier to use at high speeds. It's the chip Alan is waiting for so he can make G4 cpu cards for the µA1-C

Or more correctly they are starting to find out. You'd be surprised at the lack of knowledge displayed by many people that come and ask us about hardware.

Then again maybe it's only OUR customers who are like that.

Sigh... are we comparing Apple with Eyetech prices again ?

Tell me... Economy of scale is something like 'abracadabra' for Amiga market
My complain about 9200 vs 7000 was just an irony but if we compare Apple and Eyetch do you think small company means selling a bit buggy hardware with insufficient support is OK (insufficient support is quite a standard on Amiga market (greetingz to few who really cares))

Hey, you make a stackable case the size and shape of a tissue box and make it look different

The cheapest one costs about £360 in Norway, I was initially interrested, but maybe I'll cross my fingers and wait for a price drop.

It surely is I had nightmares about it (ok, I'm exaggerating). But honestly, yes the design is "simple" but I don't think it is elegant, I think it is rather boring and, well, ugly. But obviously it's a matter of taste.

Granted, however, the 9200 is considerably slower than e.g. the 8500/9100, and in no way compliments a 1 Ghz G4. I would have really thought that Apple could do better and maybe use one of the newer chips like the 9600.

It's not like this new Mac is a competition to AmigaOne, it is mainly a competition to cheap PC's, and if you consider this, then any cheap retail PC will have a better graphics board in it...

Heck, if I'd sell a million computers a year, I would damn sure make it look different! This case is almost as bad as the walker!

I could grab a cookie box that looks better than that!

Make no mistake, I think that the machine is REALLY neat, but I would definitely need to glue the case to the back of the monitor so I wouldn't see it.

This is a nice machine, it's powerful enough for most needs and is specced just as well if not better than similar priced PC.

Refer to value-end HP?s AMD based PCs.

I could ask my mother, she collects those boxes ... which reminds me that some unnamed person living near you still owes me a cookie

Hm, I could port OS 4 to it and refine the box with a Boingball sticker

No, the Walker was really really ugly! I'm happy this case never made it to the market (I liked the Amiga inside but not the case!).

But I like the MAc mini!
