We have a seperate file server. I run backups once a week to external hard drives which are then kept off site and cycled. I do this using a backup program just using the PC on my desk. The machine being replaced isn't involved at all.
I'm building the server today and i'm going to start looking into it. This has been a very useful thread, thanks to everyone.
@opi: You might get some emails... we'll see

The live cd's are good to test machine compability with, as well as test graphic environments, but to test server functions it is better to try a full install. _________________ Site admins are people too..pooff! |

| Well, thanks guys. This topic was extremely helpful.
After experimenting with a couple of different distros, I settled on OpenSUSE. Got Samba, Postfix, Dovecot all working great. The server goes live this weekend, and the NT4 box can finally retire _________________ Playstation Network ID: xeron6 |

| I thought people may be interested to know that the OpenSUSE server has been working absolutely brilliantly ever since. Never once have we had any real problem with it, browsing SMB shares on the LAN is several times faster, and it even notifies me of security updates so its easy to keep up to date.
I couldn't be happier with it.

I'd recommend CentOS. It's the free version of RHEL, with the only difference being you don't get official support. |
Uhm, no, that would be Fedora. Notice the copyright by Red Hat at the bottom of the Fedora home page.
Fedora is the free, experimental, bleeding edge of Red Hat. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who was new to Linux. CentOS is also based on Red Hat/Fedora, but is a different group and is more stable.
I use Fedora at home myself, and have used Red Hat OS's since at least 2001ish._________________ I've decided to follow an awful lot of people I respect and leave AmigaWorld. If for some reason you want to talk to me, it shouldn't take much effort to find me. |

You're replying to a post that was made months ago. You might be right but Xeron has already made the decision and gone with OpenSUSE and hasn't had a problem with it. |

I apologize if there is some unspoken rule that age-old posts that are flatly wrong should be left uncorrected, but when I logged on yesterday the thread was on the front page (I wasn't the only one to comment on it yesterday), and it interested me, so I read it. I cam on Henry Case's blatantly wrong statement, looked through the rest of the thread, saw that it was left uncorrected, and decided to do so. I dont' see why on earth anyone should have a problem with that, unless AW.net has a policy that blatantly wrong statements should go uncorrected after a certain period of time.
Then again, considering a lot of the threads on this website, I guess that is the standard policy here; it's one reason I don't log in often anymore.
Heck with the lot of you. Someone delete my account, please. _________________ I've decided to follow an awful lot of people I respect and leave AmigaWorld. If for some reason you want to talk to me, it shouldn't take much effort to find me. |

"Blatantly wrong" because he used "the" instead of "a?" Someone will need to correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure Fedora doesn't include RHEL components out of the box. If it did, it would be RHEL, and Red Hat wouldn't have a pretty distribution to up-sell to corporate customers. CentOS, however, does include RHEL components, as do other branches of RHEL.
It's too bad Google doesn't have Goggles for forums. You might have saved yourself a bit of embarrassment from the public whine-fest. _________________ Sam440ep-flex 733 MHz/1 GB RAM/Radeon 9250/AmigaOS4.1 Update 2 borked A1200/Blizzard1260+SCSI-IV/Z4+MediatorZIV/Deneb/Voodoo3/CatweaselMk3 more borked A1200/MBX1200z/Indivision A500/clockport/RRNet A600/A603 |

Uou have a DC which is next to death? I hope you have a second controler or very strong backups.
Note that resellers still have Windows2003 available, if Win2008 frightens you.Last edited by elwood on 04-Sep-2009 at 08:46 PM.

| This is all just post-mortem rambling, of course, but I would have gone with Windows. While the incidence of the Dunning–Kruger effect is probably higher in Windows administrators than in Linux administrators, the impact is far less disasterous.
EDIT: Then again, Windows administrators tend to have at least some professional training. Unix administrators, if not part of the old guard, tend to have mysterious origins. Last edited by Trev on 04-Sep-2009 at 09:37 PM.

Well, after testing and running both as server and running them as desktop at home, the winner is clearly 2008. So imho, go for 2008 straight away if the choise is between 2003 and 2008._________________ Site admins are people too..pooff! |

My point still is: Have a look at TCO before you choose. |
Understood, consider Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for informed decision making. Thank you for the reminder! |
