Windows question

I have a PC running W98. It has a CD/DVD Combo drive which is not recognised by CD Creator or Nero. I've changed the drive from a Lite-On LTR 52327S to an LG CD/DVD Writer (number escapes me) but with the same result.

Easy CD Creator says that there is no recordable drive in the system. The LG install CD refuses to install anything (it removes the "Install" button as soon as you select a package).

The drive is on Secondary Master. I can use it as a CDROM, Windows calls it a CDROM, and I can read files from it, no problem. But what do I have to do to get it to become writable?

I've disconnected the drive, brought the system up without it, then powered down and reconnected it, hoping Windows would think it was "New Hardware", but it didn't (or at least didn't say anything).

I've even re-installed Windows, but that didn't help. either. The next thing I might try is moving it from Secondary Master to Primary Slave.

Has anyone any suggestions? My wife needs to burn CDs of photos and my A1 is being taken over for this chore.

What version of Nero are you using? When I used to have the 5.5.x tree, I had to update it to 5.5.0.42 for some of the burners I had to be recognised. V6.x hasn't had any problems with any of the drives I have though, and I have a dual booting machine running 98 and XP with an LG CDRW/DVD combo drive as well as an LG DVD burner.

Well, I'm not using Nero at all, since I can't install it. Originally Nero was installed and working. I removed (de-installed) it and installed Easy CD Creator instead (because I preferred the simpler GUI). CD Creator gave this silly "can't find a recordable drive" message, and I haven't been able to recover from there.

I've tried re-installing Nero but it won't let me install any of the packages from the CD (as soon as I select a package, the "Install" button disappears).
Nero comes from a CD free with the drive.

Its an OEM version then, but the OEM version you have could be 5.5.x or 6.x. Knowing which one it is would help you greatly.

Well, I can't think of any way of determining the version without running the application. As it stands, I can't even install it, let alone run it.

The InstallShield installer won't install any of the utilities on the CD (presumably since it can't see the sort of drive it wants).

Normally something won't install from the CD because the installer thinks it already is installed. If your drive is recignised both in the bios and seen by windows, then you should be able to read with it (discounting a hardware fault with the drive).

Well, as I said in the original post, I can read CDs with it just fine. The BIOS reads the type OK, but Windows calls it a CDROM and everything else seems to follow suit.

I think I'll have to wipe the Windows partition, make a clean installation and start again. It's a newish installation and all the data is on another partition anyway, so I shouldn't lose anything (famous last words!).

I am using Nero Burning ROM version 6.x. No issues encountered on various drives, including the mentioned LG models in a dual-boot setup.
