| Until OS4 is released, Zeta is my OS of choice and it is really nice. Resembles a lot of AmigaOS, but more modern. Should OS4 fail Zeta will also be my choice of path (maybe together with AROS). |

Yes indeed very interesting! I actually bought Zeta R1.1 and got it only yesterday so I'm playing around a lot with this OS, and I have to say that it is nice, really nice! I used to use BeOS around when it just came to x86 in 98-99 I think, and it was really a nice transition when I moved from AmigaOS for the first time.
However, Zeta is not as good as the old BeOS was, sure it's the best Beos around these days, but there are some things disturbing me, among others stability and applications. Sure the OS seems stable enough, but during my first 5 hours in front of it it crashed two times, and then I mean really crashed, "Welcome to debugging land" with a nice monitor to go with it. Well for the apps, when looking at bebits.com (which is the equal to os4depot) there are sure a lot of apps there, nearly 4000 I think, but sooo many of the links are broken and many apps just wont run on Zeta.
Other than that it's really nice, the Gui is slick and responsive (though not as responsive as AmigaOS ofcourse ) there is also the latest FireFox that works like a charm (almost) and an ICQ and MSN client that works (but isn't that nice looking). Office suit is also included but isn't that impressive.
Some things that also managed to impress me was the autodetect of all hardware, just installed it and everything just worked (!), not used to that on x86 machines. And internet connection was also quite smart, works out of the box.
I'm really looking forward to the 1.2 release, and certainly more stability. |
