I played around with the improvements of pictures that could be made using AI:

Maniac Mansion:

Improvement? Original looks best, the other two are... well... too generic, too soulless (just look at the portraits).

I'm impressed. Which AI did you use? Exactly what did you do to make it generate this image? How long did it take?

AI, my friend, is an impressive and revolutionary technology.

On the other hand THE USE the usual knaves and nimrods make of it (example above) is pathetic.

HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF!
Grandmas using marvelous undersea infrastructure, sophisticated network stacks and miraculous video encoding algorithms to watch funny kittens.

AH HUMANITY

The system requirement for an AI'ed Maniac Mansion would rise from 68000/7 to Multicore 3 GHz.

THUNK firend _analogkid_ THUNK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If it was "AI'ed" it would be "AI'ed" by transforming bitmaps into photorealistic bitmaps.
NO NEED FOR MULTICORE 3GHZ COMPUTATIONAL DEVICES!!!!!!!!!! Even a dos pc from the 1990s would do the trick.

If it was realtime 3d with fancy shadows and whatnot, then yes, my warmest friend, yes a multicore modern box would be required but GUESS WHAT YOU CAN'T TURN SPRITESHEETS INTO 3D MODELS WITH AI - NOT YET!!!!!!!!!!

Ah my friends,
thinking became so optional nowadays, didn't it?
DIDN'T IT?
And maybe it's AI's fault too.

Anyway, BACK TO EGA, STILL COURTESY OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

https://creator.nightcafe.studio

AI model: flux2 small

Function:
Prompt to Edit Edit an image by describing what you want to change.

With the original screenshot as start image.

Prompt:
scene: woman is standing in a hallway with 2 doors and pictures on the wall. todo: improve image resolution, remove dithering, render its more realistic
-----

Nightcafe Studio is cheap/free to use, the possibility to use is for an adventure made me playing around with generative AI. The AIs on Nighcafe are sadly bad trained for styles and most AIs have problems with embedded text:

You can train the AIs for a specific style (Patrick Nagel):

But is is not easy to get what you really wanted, the consistence of the renderings are very different, prompts are sometimes ignored and there are things that don't work because they were never trained (I couldn't generate a picture of a sphinx)

I see an AI just as a tool for generating pictures, backgrounds and characters should be generated independently, character animations and consistent characters (for comics or adventures) could still be a problem.

I see you have transferred it in a comic style with outlines ... not bad.

@Thread

But you need more for a good adventure game, I remember a time when those games were just "hack, slash and grab" games something like:
Here is a dungeon, grab some gold, get a sword, grab more gold

You need a story, why do you start your quest, and how does its ends, "The Secret of Monkey Island" is a perfect example:

Start:
You are Guybrush Threepwood you want to become a pirate.

End:
You have killed the evil ghost pirate "Le Chuck", you have won the heart of a beautiful woman and you are an official pirate now.

Yes and there is a story between ...

@OneTimer1

I found a genuine use case for this. I plan to use AI enhanced images of screenshots of actual in game locations for my AB3D2 mod. The resulting images look more like professional renderings while preserving the overall scene geometry.

I really don't like them.

Enhancing an original image is a GREAT thing to have, but only if it maintains all its original details. Which isn't clearly the case looking at the results that you've posted.

What those "AIs" (!) actually do is replacing elements with something which looks similar. Which I don't like at all.
