I can't agree with your statement of no websites working. Maybe it is the sites I go to. With Ibrowse I am still banking (Toronto Dominion). I search for my daughter(18) and son(9) for school projects and a little of this and that for myself. My peeve is that I can't use Flash on the Linux side. |
Some work. But you see if I use the Amiga and I have the laptop next to it so that I can do my work I cannot help myself thinking how stupid this is. If I show OS4 and people see that browsing is a no go they shake their head in disbelieve.

IBrowse and AWeb are good for what they were designed for which, at the time, was the common web-spec. In this, they function fine for website still centred around that specification.
But I have to agree that we are in need of a browser which supports more modern web standards. Whether this be Paihia, KTML, or a Mozilla variant is unknown, but all would be nice! _________________ After a decade away from the scene, I am back! |

It is the truth, if you do not see this, you are delusional. Why would everyone be complaining if the Amiga browsers are not horribly out of date? They do not even support HTML4 and Javascript properly, let alone CSS, XHTML et cetera, which are the CURRENT web standards. You can argue all night that they work fine with HTML3.2 websites, it makes no difference. Last edited by AMiGR on 05-Mar-2006 at 03:02 PM.

Do you have any better solution? Do you know any other browser effort that has a currently WORKING web engine supporting the current web standards, including CSS and Unicode? The only alternatives I see is a browser nowhere to be seen (Paihia) and a ghost porting effort (Mozilla)._________________

| If we want to have Firefox as a browser it is only going to happen if someone or some company lays down the money for 4 programmers to work a year on it FULLTIME.
Both Firefox and OpenOffice are not portable in spare time; they are maintainable in spare time.
So lets face facts here; it is going to take a ####load of money getting these 2 products on the Amiga system. The small fee bounty of Amizilla is nothing compared to the amount of time that needs to be invested.
I think we should count on at least 100 000 euro for Firefox and 100 000 for OpenOffice.
So we need some big investor that is keen on donating money without return and would like to see both products on the Amiga system.
Untill then, there will be no port of either product and we should quit the topics about "When will product X arrive". _________________ AmigaOne-XE G3 OS 4. A4000 PPC A1200 PPC |

i have no solution at all (as you all, after all).
I'm happy with the current solutions and i'll support them until the new releases will come out without unuseful whinings.
You are not? well . . use FF or what you prefer for your "seriuos" web browsing.
The only thing i'm calling is, RESPECT who are spending time for us. (remember that are all hobby projects)

I agree with you about it being somewhat laughable that we don't have a modern browser.
In fact, I will even go so far to say that if... "The powers that be" dont do anything to address this SERIOUS deficit then Os4 will fail to take off at all.
I'm not saying that it's Hyperions responsibility to create one because it isn't...
However....
If they want Os4 to sell.........
Might be wise to find a solution.
Of course Smithy might pop in at any moment and surprise us.
Then again.... I might release the BoXer next week !! _________________ ****************************************** I dont suffer from Insanity - I enjoy it

| Smithy said that he was at least six months behind schedule with Paihia in this thread. Unfortunately we're not going to get a modern browser very soon. All developers of Amiga browsers are working on updating their browsers but they all have the same problem, lack of time. Having only a few hours a week to code makes development pinfully slow.

Hm, last time I checked, the AWeb team wanted to use KHTML and porting this, or using a ready made port, was their focus. So, that leaves ONE Amiga browser developer "to respect", IBrowse and he is working on OS4. Last edited by AMiGR on 05-Mar-2006 at 03:42 PM. Last edited by AMiGR on 05-Mar-2006 at 03:30 PM.

I cannot access my webmail which by all means is simple. And there are tons more of those examples that shows how horrible Amiga browsers are outdated.

Yes, it's a monster, certainly. It's not impossible, but certainly isn't showing any significant signs of life, so I haven't been holding my breath.

Already have (donated).
Quote:
There is absolutely no point in "competing" browsers for the Amiga, and especially not buying them anymore. |
I'm undecided on this, although I have certainly thought the same. Yet another case where the 'Amiga market' is 'special,' or thinks it is. I have registered IBrowse, but it's an ungodly expense considering browsers are now free everywhere else. Moreso when it seems the project is nearly dead, and that it seems IBrowse 3.0 will be a 'new' rather than upgrade fee AFAIK.
Assuming a decent browser comes about as a result of the KHTML port at some point, I'm also wondering just how IBrowse could survive. Funny, as I currently think AWeb has a horrible interface, still from the 80's, but if AWeb wraps itself around KHTML, it's likely going to eat IBrowse alive. Or if Marcik's browser is turned into a full browser, same situation.
I expect for some time yet, people will be willing to pay for things that aren't available (on AOS, or MOS) in other forms on the platform, even if/though they're free elsewhere, but the chance for 'Paihia' to make any $ here is before a KHTML browser is available (which will be free)...after that, it's chance at least to be a commercial 'success' of any kind is pretty tiny...
Of course, we still have nothing truly usable now. If Voyager dev had continued, it might have come far enough, but failing that, there's IBrowse....until something better.
