The Chinese have a sort of ruthless pragmatism. They just don't share all the same values and scruples we tend to think of as normal in the west, so if you have something useful and you get them to manufacture it, they are going to copy it, because whatever you threaten them with is basically a completely ineffectual deterrent. However, it's also clear they don't want to be critically dependent on externally controlled technology and that shows in the progress they've made in moving away from it. Let's be clear: technology embargos against them are ultimately only going to harm the vendors of said technology more than it harm's China in the long run. They'll just make their own. The chinese ethos is; if you create or invent or get something SHARE IT to help everybody.
As for hacking, there's no Country on the planet that comes close to the US..

where do you have that nonsense?
In middle age china had a profitable monopoly in silk and porcelaine. Both was top secret, "Sharing" it with outside world was threatened with death Last edited by OlafS25 on 27-Nov-2023 at 10:30 AM.

that was only because they were inferior to western world. Imitating and copying was easier than doing all the development and research. They even copied western porcelaine. |

Ok, but nothing they now do is superior to the west in the 21st century besides cheap labour and a can do attitude due to less red tape (i.e. no worker protections or Health & Safety legislation)! They do not innovate because they have no incentive to do so while their laws and practices do not respect IP law. _________________ "Art challenges technology. Technology inspires the art." I have a chinese TV and it is working very good. Also chinese companies are now very competitive in E-cars. China is today more than violating IPs and doing cheap copies of western products.
But as I said... they did this because they did not have the know-how and resources of western companies and not because they have the attitude or tradition to "share innovations". When they are ahead somewhere they will also protect IPs. |

See my point about ruthless pragmatism. Push them into a corner and they'll do whatever they need to do. They already have all the manufacturing and fabrication capabilities. What, you think they can't step up to the plate to design their own stuff if they needed to?
Western civilisation is in decline. We have more flat earthers and XY chromosomal individuals convinced they are women per unit population than anywhere else in the world. We seriously have people thinking that mathematics needs to be "decolonised" - mathematics FFS. The most universally inclusive endeavour. You know what the Chinese do with mathematics? Use it. In the Netherlands we're all pointing fingers towards China saying it's a bad country and we don't want their technology.
However, we're more than happy to get cheap stuff from AliExpress and don't mind use China made electronics as long as names like Sony, Samsung or Philips are stamped all over it.
We have to accept the fact that while we were taking our hazzardous, labourintensive manufacturing to China we were also giving away technology.
Currently, a lot of jokers are saying the China built (electric) cars are useless and will never catch up. We thought that of Hyundai and Kia as well. We did so with Honda, Toyota, Mazda.. Only for some false comfort, we tend to forget where the Japanese took about 20 / 30 years to get their cars sorted, the Korean took like 15... China will be there within 5 to 10 years. If they're not already 'there' .
Let's face it, and I feel you understand, without China tech there wouldn't be much technolgy available at the moment. _________________ Back home... |

We all do it. Western governments like to point out all the problems China has, while being totally dependent on what China does and how China does it, for their needs. "Oh, look how badly they are polluting!" while outsourcing so much dirty industry to them. "Oh look how bad their working conditions are!" yet not one apple fan decided it was worth not buying the latest iThing over.
China knows our societal weaknesses very well. Last edited by Karlos on 27-Nov-2023 at 03:42 PM. Last edited by Karlos on 27-Nov-2023 at 02:54 PM.

They still seemingly NEED to invade Taiwan in order to get any microchip design expertise! They have legions of Shenzhen minions 'recycling' chip from old phones because they don't know how to design them! They don't yet have a fully functioning industrial design complex. _________________ "Art challenges technology. Technology inspires the art." John Lasseter, Co-Founder of Pixar Animation Studios |

Sounds like you've had an overdose of the "Sun Newspaper"
The R&D budget in China is the biggest in the world by far, it won't be long before they are world leaders in everything.
They are already world leaders in Telecom Equipment , 5G , Internet Backbone stuff. Already invented 5.5G , and doing lots of reseach into 6G.
The Infrastructure is awesome , Road , Rail , Bridges etc.
Still a long way to go , they have modernised so fast that theyv'e left the peasant farmer types behind, but started a massive educational drive.
How do I know this ? Been there, been there and been there..

Been there too and love the culture but I also keep abreast of their investment in zombie cities to keep the property investment bubble going! I also see the environmental pollution, the government fraud/waste, IP theft, greed and lack of basic decency in terms of looking out for or helping fellow citizens (due to litigation concerns) etc. As soon as living standards contract they'll be issues. The phenomenal growth of the Christian House Church movement is quite possibly the only hope for their society. If Biblical truth takes root maybe they'll be a true revolution for the better. In the meantime the CCP is a real threat to the planet, human freedom (Uyghurs in particular) and our western way of life (bankrolling Russia to limit the scope of our economic sanctions). They also stifle the ingenuity of the regular Chinese citizen by turning a blind eye to IP theft and fraud and allowing the seizing of foreign investment/manufacturing facilities. _________________ "Art challenges technology.
