@all Sadly the documentation required to use the Radeon's video decoding hardware just isn't available. I have seen snippets of MPEG stuff in the R500 documentation, but not enough to actually use it. |
It's not possible to have the informations by using an open source Linux player (who support hardware DVD playback) and look at the source code ?
|
Linux players use a library such as XvMC or VDPAU, which in turn use a hardware-specific driver. It is the driver's source-code that we'd need, which is not available.

just to add to the discussion. a mplayer benchmark of 500 frames of the same .VOB file. First one playing of my hard drive and the second one of the DVD drive. hardrive benchmark is like 32.25 times faster. What gives ?

There where some kind of strategic partnership with matrox?
If we are honest, speed of matrox GPUs (poor) would not be issue with current hardware. Sam wouldn't be super computer even with fastest ATI gpus and recent drivers

In the IPC area, PPE in the Xbox 360 is a similar class to PPC460 i.e. dual instruction issue in-order processing. Xbox 360's PPE is crippled by 1.6Ghz L2 shared cache.
But with modern games, effective GpGPU is paramount i.e. AMD’s Xenos GpGPU enables Xbox 360 to be on par with Sony's PS3.

There will no be modern games for Amiga Os, if we are lucky we get some semi modern games less than 10 years old :)
Thats why it not importan how powefull GPU is, there will no be use of it.
BUT it would be nice if we could use all features of them, like 3d, video codecs etc.
Small companies like s3/matrox are often more friendly to other companies |

| @utri007 OpenCL support is expected for Gallium. GPUs from Ati will allow access to GP-GPU programming, which can also be used to accelerate Video-Playback.

Gallium doesn't have it yet and it might take quite some time. OS4 doesn't have gallium so I really don't see the point advertising features from software which A) Doesn't exsist on OS4 B) Doesn't even have them. Kinda misleading users. |

| @Rose Advertising? You really meant "mentioning" maybe? I stumbled upon this reports while searching for it,
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/mesa/clover/
and since utri007 said powerful GPU are only good for games, I mentioned a different use that might become available (I don't see where I advertise it as "available" or "existent today").
On a more general note, we can say that, by the same token, we have no support for S3 or Matrox stuff either, so nothing for nothing better to finish what is already in the making, we might end up enjoying other uses too eventually. The other proposed options seem weak to me...

I don't know what you wrote in your second post, but you already made your point in the first post. It wasn't exactly a constructive addition to the conversation, and didn't answer the OP's question, yet it was allowed by the mods. Continuing with that tone would be considered trolling by some people, and that's not allowed.

Year 2011: FullHD, BluRAY, 3D, Ultra High Def. (example) etc... and these "amigas" (notice the quotes, please), cannot even play a dvd, a technology 15 years old which today even 100$ computers and telephones can play without pushing their processors |
It's disappointing that despite advancements in home entertainment technologies like FullHD, Blu-ray, 3D, Ultra High Def., many "amigas" (friends) struggle with playing a simple DVD due to outdated devices. This highlights the disparity between tech progress and accessibility for all users. |
