Based on his comments at Amiga Ireland, it would appear that Michael Battilana has good intentions ("time to heal old wounds") and is simpatico with Trevor Dickinson.

After close to two decades of what can be generously described as a nightmare, I'm pretty good with dreaming.

This mostly depends on Amiga Inc status of operation. I wouldn't be surprised if they just hadn't even the money needed to renew their trademarks anymore... And I don't believe the parties have always been in good relationship...

As long as that chapter is officially closed it's likely best left as an anecdote in a book by Brian Bagnall.

@cgutjahr

In both the english and german editions of the Amiganews update the link to boingball is a repeat of the direct link to the AmigaOS filing. (for me anyway).

Thanks.

@all:

as number6 pointed out, the news item has been updated. Hyperion didn't just apply for "AmigaOne", but also "AmigaOS" and the Boingball.

Makes sense, they have been using those trademarks under license, so why not move to own them now that they are available?

If anyone hasn't noticed, I'm not the biggest supporter of Hyperion, BUT compared to Amiga Inc....they come off looking good.

Then again, that's an off hand compliment rather like "Dude, THAT is an ugly hat, it look's good on you though".

Virtually everyone has a bugaboo of some sort about someone and that has been hugely detrimental to the platform for a long time.

Mike Battilana made reference to this issue a few months ago with respect to Amiga Inc.:

https://youtu.be/j8QlifyGv24?t=453

The timing of his talk is interesting given the trademark ownership situation but if anything, the underlying message now has even more gravitas.

For the better part of two decades, we endured a lot of pain and grew weary from hoping that the Amiga would get a chance to live on under the stewardship of people who both cared about the platform and believed that it could provide a viable market.

That shift is happening now and with that transition comes tremendous responsibility from all parties to work together and move forward.

I wanted to get the hard to get Classic Nintendo on Amazon for $140 but since it was announced it wouldn't be made anymore, the price is over $300 on Amazon and Ebay.

My mother in law remarked that it is not important to own everything.

We've moved on from some trademarks today. I'm not going to buy a genlock. I'm not going to buy a toaster. I'm not going to buy an Amiga 1000. These items are obsolete. You can't own everything.

@gregthecanuck

Thank you gregthecanuck, that is great news.

That is something really worth investing in if it can be modeled to look and feel like as if it were an Amiga built as a new model from Commodore, an evolution of sorts, with all the bells and whistles we should have had years ago.

My interest in particular is tracking music, so, with the AAA promise of having 16bit 16channel audio support (with maybe more channels that originally planned for), this would be outstanding. Midi and DSP functionality would be great as well. Akiko chip in software as part of the core?

The other hope would be if this board also included a geek port edge connector, so additional hardware could be snapped on. It may evoke a whole new ecosystem of hardware add-on developers as well, to add additional hardware capabilities to the system.

It would be truly great!

Q!

Thanks for the video post. I do expect the remaining players to play nice with each other.
Their respective markets are relatively well defined.

And if we can pull off the financing for it, Acube will be doing the schematics for the T2080 laptop motherboard, so that's fairly cool.

Yes, things do seem to be looking up.

Of course, these days people tend to ask "What's an Amiga?".

In an ideal world, the remaining/returning/emerging players will work towards forming an Open Amiga consortium, specifying a reference platform and some form of certification.

It doesn't have to be formal, just a way to bring the various parties to the table and to open the lines of communication.

There is an Amiga market and it would be best served if it embraced the concept of coopetition.

I guess we should wait for official statements or more informations before coming to any conclusion.

Ah, this looks good, but it needs to be formalized.
Once the trademarks are actually granted to the applicants, THEN we can start congratulating ourselves.

Even then I wouldn't. If Hyperion didn't send their friendly reminder to A. Inc they themselves are in violation of the settlement. >.< Personally I'm gearing up to watch the latest and greatest edition of the Hyperion VS A. Inc lawsuits. :)

I don't think anyone can claim it anymore, since it noone has cared for it since the demise of Commodore, and it has been _widely_ used all the time since then. So, AFAIK, anyone who wants can use it :)

I'm not, lawyers cost money.
And Hyperion is not responsible for Amiga Inc's lack of due diligence or their need to PAY to maintain their trademark registrations.

Further, they are required to actually USE the trademark.
And outside of a couple of licenses for reproduction items like cases, they have failed to produce anything since their scam games package.

While Hyperion has actually produced a NEW Amiga related product.

SO, let 'em try an sue. They'd lose.

Again, I'm not even a Hyperion supporter, BUT I do have an MBA in Business Management.
And this, while no means a done deal, does not look like a winnable situation for AInc.

They ought to close shop and fade away like the bad nightmare they have been for almost 20 years.
