Well the name getting less and less important, the A500 mini proves this, without Amiga branding it got the coverage.

It why A-eon, who likely worried they haven’t got rights to the AmigaOne name has all but dropped it to refer to their products as just x5000, x1000, and a1222.

Soon for progress of AmigaOS4, a-eon maybe referred to the os as System v54, I do wonder if A-eon could get away with calling it OS4.2?

pimiga, amikit, coffinos, Apollo os, icaros, all had levels of success without the name, now don’t get me wrong if one of them got the chance to rebrand as AmigaOS I sure it would suddenly get a lot more interest / attention.

In a way AmigaOs 3.1.6 / AmigaOs3.2 get a lot of attention for fixes and patch’s that had been made available through hacks before now anyway, I suppose streamlining and smooth integration into the OS source helps too.

My point is the brand / license has lucky not stopped the Amiga community from carrying on and making progress and I wish more people paid attention to the great work and great platform choices we have today without the Amiga branding.

Personally, I don't see much value in having something branded this way or the other. What the Amiga was and what the Amiga is just isn't the same thing. It was a massively innovative computer with an advanced OS, an amazing games library, and a real shot at mainstream dominance. That is what the brand used to represent, but that was a long time ago. Nowadays, I believe the Amiga is nostalgia and a great retro games/software library to some, and completely unknown to most.

A few years ago I had a vision of what I personally thought a new "Amiga" should be, and that vision remains the same. In order to have anything approximating commercial success, I believe a new Amiga would need exploit the strengths it still has: the games and the nostalgia. In addition, I would suggest infusing it with some of the simplicity and immediate creativity you had with older computers. Remember those old 8-bit computers which you would just switch on and then immediately start entering code? That's the general gist of the kind of simplicity I imagine. Of course I am not only talking about coding, the computer would have a range of simple but adequate productivity software which would be ready to use and require no setup.

This would not be a computer designed to compete with PCs or consoles. It would be a fun machine doing its own thing, while taking advantage of charm, nostalgia, and an amazing retro games library.

The A500 Mini is an example of something which fulfills some of the things I am talking about. It doesn't have the official Amiga branding, but it looks like an Amiga, and it will allow people to easily play the games they fondly remember from the past. I am looking forward to getting my hands on it. Of course, I would pay even better money for a scaled up version which had a working keyboard and was capable of doing some of the other things I am talking about.

Amigaworld polls are buggy. You have to skip the preview step. Create your poll, check everything carefully for mistakes, and click "Submit."

@OneTimer1

IMHO, the Amiga brand will always be associated with the classic Commodore Amiga systems.

However, I also get that good old "Amiga" feeling from MorphOS, AROS, OS4, emulation and QNX.

I speculate that someday we will have yet another OS from A-EON and it does not bother me at all.

I treated it as a multiple choice poll.

I know many would prefer that any form of new Amiga carries the brand AMIGA. In an ideal world, we would be able to have a proper 3rd commercial personal computing platform as an alternative to Windows PCs and Macs, and it would be an AMIGA. Alas, we do not live in an ideal world.

For many years now, and on multiple occasions I have favoured the resurrection of the AMIGA in spirit only. It would be pointless spending millions of dollars on an old brand, when that money could be better used to actually make the kinds of computing products we would want to use.

@agami

I see your poll and raise you... not only is my poll multiple-choice, it's contradictory.

We don’t need the ® and ™ all over the place, no.

So that anyone who do anything related to Amiga can just use the proper words without silly obfuscations and legal work-arounds.

You caught me. As a German I'm sometimes mixing up German and English language, grammar or orthography.

you -> du
vor -> for
bevor -> before
do -> tu

But I really meant "Do we still need 'The Amiga (R)' ?''

Sorry for this typo / misspelling

@OneTimer1

Take no offense friend OneTimer1!
Meaning to mock you I did not.

Rather, I cared to point out how the song popped into this old brain of mine,
each time I would lay my tired retinas on the topic's title.

@thread

TheA500 Mini logo was described as a cutout of the recognized Amiga boing ball logo.

Interesting to note:
A1200.net

Also using it in a similar fashion.

Other than Amigagamesinc. using the boing ball, is it being used by anyone currently selling a product?

No we dont't need it.
What we need is something cheap with real 68k or ppc cpu, Amiga Os clone and graphics on at least ps1 level.

What if it hadn't resembled an Amiga 500 in any way?

@Rob

Well, its not Amiga500, its emulator, running AGA stuff, and keyboard is not working, and no support or any Amiga 500 upgrades, like action replay iii
and no HD support.

Sadly the name Amiga is a joke, thanks to a lot of mess, no point looking back.
