From: AMIGAWORLD.NET WAS ORIGINALLY FOUNDED BY DAVID DOYLE

Friends of the Amiga,
dearest dearest friends.

This Amiga World that David Doyle founded for us all, had already been a limping half cadaver for years, when the forces of darkness took over it (for god knows what reason) and let it further rot.

This Amiga World that David Doyle originally founded is now broken, with maintainers unwilling or unable to fix what falters.

PERMANENT AVATARS! UN-SETTABLE SIGNATURES! INVISIBLE LOGGED-IN COMRADES!
Just for starters.

HOWEVER!!!

However, w̶h̶i̶l̶e̶ ̶b̶u̶i̶l̶d̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶f̶r̶i̶c̶o̶p̶a̶l̶ during a casual analysis of these interweb pages,
I have realized that it is easily possible to scrape the entirety of each forum's posts.
All of the user profiles.
All of the other media such as news and the horrid pictures in that "image album".

so, WHAT IF!!

What if someone, perhaps this very tortured soul of yours truly,
re-created what David Doyle originally, lovingly founded,
with familiar colors, graphics, layout, a similar domain,
but a modern back and frontend
AND
populated it with its current content?

WOULD YOU MIGRATE?
WOULD YOU MARCH AWAY FROM THE ABSENTEE PHARAHOS?
WOULD YOU WALK INTO THIS PROMISED LAND keeping your username and posts?

WOULD YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@MEGA_RJ_MICAL

I have a name suggestion for the proposed website clone: amoogaworld.net
It has a good ring to it. Include a red and white checkered cow as logo/mascot and you'll be on to a real winner. The sunny hills of Amoogaworld are sure to get everyone mooving!

@Hans @MEGA_RJ_MICAL

Numbers of posts and active members have decreased,
the problems on the forum software have increased.

There are a lot of other forums like amigans.net (that is mainly AOS4 centric) a1k.org (mostly German, mostly closed) eab.abime.net even moobunny.org is up again.

I would change or I would use them in parallel, it depends on further development.

- it should avoid avoid the name 'Amiga' (legal reasons) but Amoogaworld sounds like moobunny.
- it should be HTML 3.2 compatible no CSS, reduced GFX (iBrowse compatible)
- Avatars, and some basic formatting options (quote, bold, image link) would be nice
- deleting of users only via replacing the name in the database.
- a limit for posted text lines ( less tahn 100 )
- emoticons/smilies some people can't live without them.
- I like the color scheme here, it seems friendly, boing ball is not needed (legal reasons).
- the boards should be reorganized, some are hardly used others like like Linux, ARM, Windows, could be added.

@OneTimer1

Friend OneTimer1,

the key is mirroring the old content, CONTINUING the legacy of David Doyle rather than just moving the ret-herd somewhere else.

What software, what additional boards - such things are mere afterthoughts.

The abhorrent truth is that we deeply care about the trash we piled up here theough the years. Yes, we want to carry over even cdimauro or ppcamiga1's posting history to that "next place".

As for the legal implications you hint at,
"LOL, ROTFL" as the youngsters type.

We may use amigaworld.org as much as commodoreworld.net or anything we please. We can make amigaos 3.1 sources mandatorily downloadable as a "prove you are human" check.

In a heartbeat.

I toyed with the idea of doing the above myself, but it's way down on the priority list.

@agami

LET'S JOIN THE FORCES
not kidding.

Among other things, this rogue migration would even recover years and years of threads and posts that our skilled admins decided for some reason to make inaccessible. HELLO ORWELL.

ps. god forbid they just handed over the database making the scraping unnecessary
GOD FORBID

Friend MEGA, it's good to see you back in this David Doyle-forsaken world to hold up a mirror to those who lack self-awareness completely. I'm sure there's useful information here that's worth archiving, from the simpler times before the forum became the unmoderated battleground for the same 4 people.
For a while this only affected Amigaworld.net, but to my dismay they have been busy over at a EAB as well in the past few years. Initially they were content with bickering among themselves in their own (forgive my pun) megathreads, day after day, for hundreds upon hundreds of pages. This had the unfortunate side-effect of making the entire sub-forum unsearchable, but it was relatively well contained. Sadly they started raiding other threads as well, hijacking them the moment someone mentions hardware specs.

@MEGA_RJ_MICAL

I think that new forum should allows bots and AI generated comments,
as it takes far too much time responding to all the topics.
and I'm sure by now some users, are sick of copy and pase text..

Friend BSZili how well did you put it, David Doyle truly FORSOOK us all.

I wasn't aware that EAB and other boards are suffering from the same desertification, although I was pretty sure that pachiderms such as Matthew R.P. Hey* would not disappear but rather move to trample other grasslands.

@NutsAboutAmiga
Yes friend, bots should be allowed to speak freely.
After all we granted this privilege to people like cdimauro or templario for the longest time, why wouldn't forms of life much more complex and self aware than them be granted the same too?

The ideal forum would be as free of moderation as Moobunny, as populated by nimrods as Amigaworld, as functional as EAB.

And trust me, oh friends,
the wheels of change are (very slowly) in motion.

I think activity of forums have decreased generally and activity increasingly moved to discord

Discord is an aweful replacement for a forum system. I hate using discord.

@F0L & OlafS25

It's not wrong, over the last 15 years forums in general have lost users to big networks like Facebook, Discord, or what so ever. It is easier to open something there and their Admins are keeping legal problems away, provide multimedia support and care for security.

They are a bad replacement for people who want to access them with their Amiga.

ALAS!!!!!! We traded freedom, individualism and customization for EASE OF USE.

Facebook, Discord, Reddit, WHAT ARE THOSE IF NOT FAST FOOD!
Easy to log onto, easy to post to, same looks same feel across the board.
THE MCDONALD'SES OF INTERNET COMMUNITIES.

Now that we have abundantly yelled at clouds,
BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD,
we have passage through the red sea to open.

While I like the idea, it didn't work out so well for moobunny a couple of years ago.

By the way, welcome back! I'd forgotten about this site until I got an email from your memorial page heralding your return.

@jorkany

Glad to learn you were the one leaving a digital flower on my premature grave. And yes, I live, again

EXECUTION!! My once mourning friend,
execution is key and moobunny had literally nothing in common with Amigaworld.

Not the user experience nor the name, and certainly not the data.
Data will make all the difference, and we are at work on that.
As a matter of fact, I am almost done with the scraping scripts.

WILL IT WORK?

We can't know, but it's worth trying.
If nothing else, it will provide an archive of every bit of quarrel, litigation, trolling, whining, nonsense, drama that these aging pages have seen over a couple decades.

Before the forces of darkness shut aw down without warning,
before the vultures and vampires sink their infectious teeth deeper into the flesh of all us nimrods.

@OneTimer1

Some one started to ask for help about classic A500 in AmigaONE forum on Discord, well nice try… I feel its bait, what do you want me to say, that I have not used a A500 in over 30 years , or that he should be using something else..

you won Amigaworld.net, why don't people ask question here?
this is the place you argue about 680x0 and legacy stuff like AGA and HAM and stuff like that..

why does it have to be Discord? if you can't even open it on classic Amiga...

Hasn't that already happened with Amigans.net ? Though trying to get signed up to the site and get a working login is akin to gaining access to Area 51.

I agree though the site seems a shadow of its former self, I remember coming here back in the early 2000s (I was even a mod for a while) and whilst it wasn't as busy as Amiga.org it was a lot livelier then.
