Following a sustained attack on the fabric of this site by malicious actors and bots, I thought there was a need for a poll to decide what urgent maintainance is required to keep this site serviceable! As if to demonstrate my point, the poll failed! We will therefore discuss the following points. Just add +1 to any of the following or suggest your own.

Failed poll Question: What Urgent Actions are needed on Amigaworld.net to Secure its Future?

1) Fixing of 'Poll' thread creation
2) Fixing of the 'Report' button
3) Fixing of the Avatar picture upload system (the all year Santa hat bug)
4) Extra security to secure against bot activity
5) Automatic thread locking after a set time of inactivity
6) More moderators to enact a swifter suspension/banning of malicious 'members'
7) A push for extra support/funding to enable these actions
Additional...
8) Better administration of SSL certification
[Edit: Sorry, number 8 was one of my poll options, but when it failed I left it off in error!]

@BigD

1) +1
2) +1

6) +1

I'm not keen on locking threads after a set time of inactivity, because I occasionally update a thread I started many years ago that is basically an historical narrative of my journey with OS4. So far fricopal! was the only bot that replied to that thread.

But I agree that The_Necromancer caused alot of havoc on this website, and appears to have been suppressed. I was surprised to see those threads resurrected after so many years.

Cheers,
redfox

@redfox

"The_Necromancer" is bumping topic that was unresolved.
some of the topics should be locked Trolika and ACK will never see the light of day...
pushing it to front page wont change that...

After living here many years ago, and picking up my Amiga recently to start getting back into things, I've found a few house keeping issues around that could do with some attention. I was going to fire up a thread with my findings, but may as well piggy back here.

Based on things I've seen in the forums, I don't think I'll be mentioning anything that people don't know about. Might be handy to have it all in a single list mind.

Though I would agree that any security issues should be priority.

Starting with your list:

1) +1
2) +1
3) +1 (You sure this isn't a feature?)
4) +2
5) +-0 So long as there's a way to request an unlock. Some conversations can be worth picking up again without having to start over.
6) +1 (The report button will likely link to this nicely)
7) +1

And if you don't mind too much, here are some of my observations:

Banner Menu:
- Features seems lacking in direction and has some very old articles showing
- Classifieds: Does this work, still being used?
- FAQs: Might benefit from a little modernising
- Links: A group activity of reviewing them all, reporting broken links and adding new and relevant links might be a good thing

User menu:
- Themes: Maybe add a couple of dark themes

Support AW.net
- Old PayPal assets in use
- Broken symbol in front of the total donated value
- Broken currency convertor button image (Is this still useful?)

Menu:
- Main sections (Ask the community, do they use these or the banner menus? Do we need both?
- OS4 Zone: Is this up to date? Can anything be removed, tweaked or added?
- IRC Network: Broken link
- AmigaWorld Radio: Still active or not?
- Newsfeed: Does all this code still work as expected?
- Top Members: Appears blank. Is this still needed, what does/did it represent?
- Amiga Dealers: As with the links in the banner menu, add/adjust/remove as needed

Information:
- About Us: Does this need updating? Does it list users/staff/mods dynamically?
- FAQ: As mentioned above, do we need this on here twice?
- Advertise: Some broken symbols like the PayPal page and is it up to date (The graph shows data from 2004)?
- TOS: Another to check if it's up to date and boring in any new guidelines needed
- Search: Like the FAQ

IRC Channel:
- Broken?
- Guidelines link. Works. Just thought I'd say :D Though might need updating if the IRC gets back up and running

Image Album:
- Buttons for "Refresh", "Post Comment" and "Reply" appear to be broken.
- Folder/Category/User view: Sort descending is broken (Ascending works)... I blame the Y2K
- Parent folders: Don't seem to show what's in there. e.g. OS Desktop Screenshots shows 4 images. Though maybe I don't fully understand what this should show.
- Folders could probably do with a clean up. I see someone's tattoo in a screenshots folder (not sure if folder is the right terminology)

Events Calendar:
- Not sure if this works, but it would be nice to have it used again. When someone posts a news article, maybe hook this in with it

Aminet and OS4 Depot latest files:
- This seems to work great, buuuut, how many people use it? It is quite cool though
- Maybe a dedicated downloads page could house them

Search
- On here a third time

Classified Ads
- Second outing on the home page

Amiga Community Sites:
- Amiga-news.de doesn't open in a _blank tab, the others do
- Are there anymore key sites that could go in here

Footer:
- All seems to be pretty much in order, if a little repeaty
- Though the David Doyle link is broken too

News Article:
- When clicked into a News Article, the STORY ID is shown above the related links

A few of my catches here lean on a general clean up and (though this might be subjective), I think a reduction in the noise could be a good thing.

It would also be great to see a mobile friendly layout.

Hope this reply isn't too triggering. I appreciate that people give their personal time in to this site, so this isn't a dig in the slightest.

All the love, FuZion.

@redfox

Maybe we could allow the original thread creator to continue to post/reactivate the threads?

Reactivating an old thread is simple, I could even recreate an old thread from another forum here, I just need to post the last posting I am referring to, give it a useful subject (that might have changed in between) and when I want to play nice, I can post a link to the old thread.

But everyone would recognize it as a reactivated thread, when I do it here by just continuing an old thread I am making the false impression as if something new has happened.

For example the Troika / Amy thread, posting something new would be useful if Amy or Troika had been reappeared, somehow and if everything continues where it had ended.
