EasyNet (AmiTCP) weirdness...

Hi,

I just bought a recent copy of EasyNet from Amigakit. I ran the installer and set it up on my Amiga 1200T.
Trying to connect, EasyNet just hangs saying "Going Online". If I disable the Live Update option via it's prefs, it goes online within 10 seconds. The catch is that Network connectivity exists between my 1200 and my DLink Router (as well as my PC), but no internet access.

The problem has been tracked down to the DNS entriers are not being used properly by AmiTCP. Currently Miami and Roadshow work fine accessing the internet.

Here is the magical party... If I enable DNS Relay in my router, guess what? EasyNet works fine. Live Update connects, email and web pages connect and display. Turn DNS Relay off, same as before.

Why does Miami and Roadshow work fine with DNS Relay off and AmiTCP not?

@Drewlio77
My DSL box recently died so the phone company sent a new all in one wireless router/switcher/DSL box. I had problems with the Amiga (AmigaOS3.9+Genesis) getting through as everything in AmiTCP/Genesis requires manual configuration. I still had problems after I figured out the gateway was 192.168.0.1 instead of 192.168.1.1 for my LinkSys router I was retiring ( I changed the gateway in Genesis). The problem seemed to be domain name related as Samba worked between my Amiga and XP laptop. I looked at the laptop settings that had been changed and discovered that the domain name server was now 192.168.0.1 which I entered into the list of Domain name servers in Genesis. This fixed the problem and now everything works. It's probably a long shot that it would fix your "inconvenience" but maybe it's worth a try. O.k. I didn't really answer your question of why but maybe it will help someone if it doesn't help you.

@matthey

Thanks for the response.

All my EasyNet's settings are correct. Like I said, if I change my router's DNS Relay to on, EasyNet works fine. Off, the DNS is broken. Genesis behaves the same way since it to uses AmiTCP. Miami and Roadshow do not since they don't use AmiTCP. So, most likely I found a bug or incompatibility in AmiTCP.

I might try the AmiTCP V4 demo and see if that behaves the same way.

Yes, AmiTCP must route it's DNS requests different than the Roadshow and Miami by default. Maybe internet providers only respond to DNS requests that come from a particular IP address (of registered users) to reduce unauthorized traffic and flood attacks. The DNS lookups (web site names) on my XP laptop didn't work until I went to an IP given in the documentation for my new DSL box. Anyway, I would expect the AmiTCP 4 demo to behave the same.

Hi going on line is just about all that Easynet ever said when i bought it ,infact it is to this day the worst item i have ever bought for my Amiga 1200 ,thank god Roadshow came along or else i would not be writing this on my Amiga now ,sorry to moan but i hated Easynet but it could be my lack of knowledge.very best wishes Brian.

Miami and Roadshow support DHCP. They get a valid DNS address from the DHCP server.

AmiTCP does not support DHCP and therefore EasyNet has to make some assumptions. The usual assumption is that the router does DNS forwarding and thus Easynet uses the router as DNS.

If you want to switch DNS relay off, you have to configure a proper DNS address in AmiTCP or Easynet.

Why do you want to keep DNS relay off?
