Since the story has already appeared, I have to consider this news of a sort.

Too much joy about such old source fork...

This one is the best:

I hope Olaf documented his compile job somewhere...

Of course he did, what they think Hyperion used for OS4?

Well, if Cloanto has such ambitions and if they lack the sources (and if they missed the last leak), then I suppose this is an opportunity for them! After all, they own it!

Well, if you remember AmigaOS Twenty Five thread, Olaf mentioned the same, albait in less detail. However, you used another name back then.

Well, this was one of my "what do you want most for 2016" items, but I categorically deny having anything to do with it.

Still waiting for peace on earth...

That's an interesting point. AFAIK Cloanto should have the copyright for the old Amiga (and Commodore 8-bit machines) software, so they should be allowed to download such archive.

And in theory they can use it for new development: from simple bug fixing (releasing some updated components) to new features, or even ports to new architectures...

Prohibited by 2009 Settlement Agreement of Amiga.Inc and Hyperion, which of course is binding also for Cloanto.

@pavlor

The state of the original OS was revealed after Commodore's death and "Olsen's" work in rewriting/cleaning/porting it to GCC became well known after the Escom/Amiga Inc transition IIRC.

I remember Amiga inc. commenting at some point about "several parties being given access to AmigaOS sources" but "No-one returned them" - maybe someone is just doing that now, as requested?

@tlosm

You could look in the sources for undocumented "features" and improve 3.1. compatibility. It would help but it is legally sticking somewhere in the nirvana, much of the old times is cursed or belonging to one camp that is defending it with all means and would never open it. So better to have a clean start and not look at it.

@OlafS25

ummm... yes but im thinking , today with all the power of the new cpu is more simple use an emulator for the old software and not improve and implement the old code that was really hardware dependent ... im thinking something like M$ did on W7 for the old compatibility or the OS4/Morphos with Euae.

What im expected today is have a Coerence System like on (parallels desktop) for the old applications and this can be did by the euae if improved

OMG, not again!

This is absolute nonsense, please stop!

1. Cloanto is not part of such agreement, agreements between two parties are not general law, not even when #? Amiga is involved, their little agreement doesn't concern Cloanto in any way, they haven't agreed to anything such. Cloanto are the sole and complete owners of the OS. They do what they want with their property.

2. The above is PROVEN (!!!) by the fact that not only does Cloanto develop the OS further on their own (their updated 3.1 release is theoretically worthy a "3.2" version bump), but also by the fact that they released it in a new stand-alone version outside the Amiga Forever emulation package (for which they had license already before). And it was not a one-time thing, Cloanto is currently marketing their(!) updated versions of 1.3, 2.1 and 3.1 as we speak, freely, outside the Amiga Forever, both as digital downloads and on physical floppy disks, which is something that hasn't happened since Hyperion was commishioned to write "OS4".

These facts should be obvious even to you. But it in a way it doesn't surprise me that you fail to see it. You seem to have a built-in censorship system in your brain that simply ignore any facts that doesn't actively support your own perception and pre-made-up view of "Amiga", this became obvious a long time ago.

You have been proven wrong on this issue time after time, but still you persist in your misinformation campaign...

Cloanto, Amiga and Hyperion think otherwise...

Edit: I know it is waste of my time, but you may read relevant part of said Settlement Agreement (13, 18 c, Exhibit 3 etc.). And... try listen to Cloanto representatives at this year Amiga events, they statement was clear.
