My AOpen DVDwriter had the same problem, I also had to eject the disc and re-inset before it showed on workbench. Sometimes I even had to reboot to eject the disc. I always thought it was probably a lack of comunication between OS and the drive. Fortunatley the sony drive doesn't appear to have these problems.

I have some Viking Direct DVD+R discs here, which have an RW logo on them, so it is probably easily done.
