Good job I put OS4Rebot in AmiDock instead of WBStartup!!!
Great you found the, or a, solution.

@Pierre55&ZeroG

ok. So by leaving OS4reboot ON your system, you could not solve the issue by using Mplayer -vo sdl [filename]?

Understood. Thanks.

I had been reading the prior MPlayer threads and noticed a number of people solved the issue by changing to software (-vo sdl) in the past, hence why I asked if this still worked for them, as opposed to moving/deleting a file (OS4reboot), as Swoop and Pierre have done.

No the only solution was to removed the OS4reboot from my WBStartup pref, Swoop put OS4reboot in amidock and it's working for him, I don't use amidock.

I'm not convinced that OS4reboot is the only thing bringing down PIP.

I have also been unable to use P96pip and have suffered from GR on closing mplayer. I have now also moved OS4reboot to amidock and increased stack to 3000000 now video playing is great!

Excellent. If you want to test the other reported failure...
Go to prefs/palette and hit "spacebar", which will lock the entire palette.
Click "use"
Then try to play an A/V file in MPlayer and see if it shows the same P96 PIP error.

Oh. And what hardware are you running this on please?

It is AmigaOne G4 800MHz. I tried locking pens and playing video but it made no difference as far as I can tell.

Thank you for trying that.
Another AmigaOne G4 owner told me the same, yet all I have to do is press "space" to lock palette, click "use", and MPlayer exhibits the same breakdown of PIP.
Unlocking palette by pressing "space" again and clicking "use", and MPlayer with PIP is functioning again.
.
It could be just me, but after ZeroG's post about the P96 pens message, I wonder.

This would indicate that P96 uses a pen to draw its overlay (PiP). I find that silly if it really is designed that way. An overlay should be completely independant of everything except possibly another overlay. I don't get why the overlay fails so easily.

Overlay replaces one certain colour (purple) with a picture. Try to find matching pen colour, use that solid colour as backdrop on your WB window, put your video player window behind it and that WB window will display your video. It's in gfx card hardware, not software. Clickme

It's not a register #? It's a "certain colour"?
I'd love to be able to prove this by locking the whole palette except for whatever color placement in the palette this is coming from IF it's a register and NOT an attempt to match a purple from anywhere in the palette.

Now I found it. On Amiga it's RGB 17, 0, 17. Test it with any program where you can fill areas with single colour. Open MPlayer/DvPlayer/whatever_player, then open any paint program and put it in front of the video player window. Set colour to 17, 0, 17 and fill the whole area with that single colour and you will see that video through your paint program. Clipping area of the video window matters too. Or put WB into window mode, use single colour as backdrop, resize the video window to fullscreen and move it back behind WB and you can watch the video as your WB backdrop.

I was thinking if it's possible to run out of free pens. OS reserves some pens (like pens 0-3) for the system so why this overlay colour is not one of those reserved pens. That way it would be garanteed overlay is available always.

Let me review what I've done vs what you've indicated (RGB 17,0,17) as necessary.
In the following 2 cases:
(1)Using my locked palette but unlocking one pen for use by P96 to use this "RGB 17,0,17" that you mention - Fail
(2)Using my locked palette but assigning the specific (RGB 17,0,17) TO one pen - Fail
(3)But again, pressing spacebar to unlock the palette in total - PIP works.

Are you sure it's not a specific register that RGB 17,0,17 has to use? Because obviously just picking one random register and inserting that entry or unlocking it for use does not work.
btw-I saved both of these single register changes and rebooted to be sure.

Nevertheless, I had yet another confirmation in irc that with a different A1 with a different graphics card, locking palette, rebooting, and running MPlayer killed PIP.

If I lock the whole palette then MPlayer crashes completely (at least with the video I used for testing). There's two new maintainers of MPlayer so I hope they can fix this.

Thanks for yet another confirmation.
All you are seeing is MPlayer then reverting to using sdl (by locking the palette). And we know that sdl does crash on EOF or "esc" to stop playback.
The maintainers are aware.
They are accumulating test files that everyone can use for testing.

Erm. In my case it crashed in the beginning before playing anything. I just tested again with sdl driver and non-locked palette it couldn't open any screen/window (full screen mode) and crashed after little while. If I use a playlist it crashes after finished the first file (pip driver + non-locked palette) but if I play a single file only then no any crashes.

I think you might even see a different result if after locking palette you use the GUI or shell to toggle the start mode from window to fs.
Anyway, I've seen various different crash results, just like you.
