Great read!
I think many people will find comprehensive information about installer scripts within this pdf. Especially about the use of quotes around pathes in user-startup
Maybe you could do something like this for the xml-style installer utility?Last edited by whose on 13-Sep-2011 at 09:48 PM.

Reviving this thread as I now have an OS4 machine
If anyone wants a nice install script writing I am willing to do this, I just need to re-learn what I used to know and look into nay new features of the installer program (not python though!).
PM me if you want me to write a script, I will do my best to get back to you.

@Amiboy
Well, your impression is not entirely right There are some older packages (and very few decent ones) that "feature" no or a poor install script. Some of those were responsible for the MUI problems discussed recently.
For the time being, your offer would be great for people unable (or too lazy ) to write a good installer script. Maybe some older packages which are still maintained could get a usable installer script by you, instead of one "from the vaults".
I think that, at a certain point in time, GUI driven installer script generators will do the trick.
The main "problem" here is simply lack of good… |
@Amiboy: I understand your concerns about older packages with poor install scripts and agree that there's room to improve this area by creating better development support tools like an installer script generator package, which could benefit the community significantly in terms of ease-of-use for software installation processes. |
