Why not :D it's just a name. There is so many names for one thing, and the different thinks having the same names ;) _________________ I change my mind. Now when I know AmigaOS4.1 is legal... :D. Thank you Hyperion! |

Please go back to 1987-1996 and rethink what did you wrote. At this time there was nothing like that. I think Opus Magellan was developed like 1996-7?

Sure, that's why i said "as soon as i could". Workbench was always pretty useless to me, except as a launcher of course (but even then, I quite hated it opened systematically a window for each directory). |

Personally I don't like Workbench... it's so annoying... 100 windows 100 catalogs . This part of AmigaOS should change for me, even in cost of transparency ;). Some nice windows/screen management. I did use a AmigaOS4.x but I doesn't look like better :(. _________________ I change my mind. Now when I know AmigaOS4.1 is legal... :D. Thank you Hyperion! |

I have grew up knowing the Amiga's operating system as 'WORKBENCH'. What happened after WB3.1 release? |
The name of operating system is AmigaOS, Workbench is just the desktop environment which shows desktop with icons on it etc. You can use AmigaOS applications completely whitout Workbench too.
Operating System: AmigaOS Desktop environment: Workbench ROM: Kickstart
Similarly on Linux you have eg. Gnome, KDE and XFCE, which are desktop environments. By the way, you know that you can replace Workbench 3.x with DirectoryOpus Magellan? If you do that then you are not using Workbench anymore but you are still using AmigaOS.

For comparison, here's the 2.1 distribution (there never was a 3.0 distribution, obviously):
I beg to differ (he says looking at his Workbench 3.0 manual). |
Steve disagrees with cgutjahr based on information from the Workbench 3.0 manual which suggests that version 2.1 could have had a successor, contrary to what was claimed by cgutjahr who stated there never was a 3.0 distribution. |

AmigaOS without Workbench would be another DOS on PC... nothing else.
You're really underestimating AmigaOS if you think so. Workbench is a small part of the OS (the desktop), and nowadays it's really outdated too. It's the part needing the most to be improved (especially regarding filemanagement). On amigaos 3.x, I got rid of Workbench as soon as i could, to use magellan as a WB replacement, which performs way better in about any situation. |
@kreciu: AmigaOS is more than its GUI; improvements are needed beyond just the desktop environment. Magellan offers enhancements that benefit overall system performance and usability. |
