Try again, I don´t think original Doom will run that good on plain 486SX 33 MHz. Maybe I´m wrong.

Doom is one of my favourite games, however I like Heretic more.
Now, I´m playing Frontier (DOS version), it works really good even with only 4500 CPU cycles!

Hi all. Just want to mention that DOSBox 0.74 is on os4depot.
Feel free to send comments and/or give performance feedback.

@Doom-people

Ehm... why do you try to run Doom in DOSBox? What's wrong with the AOS ports? Or is it just for fun to see if it runs fast enough?

I play Wolf3D on it though and that works really well. Drives you crazy with the bigger levels though since you run around like a rat in a maze and don't remember where you've been .

I'm thinking about playing through all those old adventure games as well like Larry 1, 2, 3 etc but they do consume lots of time and patience. I notice that I had way more patience when I was younger but they are still fun. I find myself going for a walkthrough solution way too often.

Testing purposes, nothing more. It is CPU/GFX demanding application that can be used for benchmarking.

Tested the new version on my Sam Flex 800 and i can say that it's faster than before

- Mortal Kombat 1 is now quite playable at low details (more or less at 386 settings) altrough it's still a bit slow but almost .. playable

- Doom 1 have no sound here and still very slow, for decent FPS you need to minimize the screen area

I will test more of course, DOSBox is really nice and stable here, the unique problem is the speed :-/

And I can run DRDos instead of MS-DOS, because I like the DR-Dos the best PC-Dos.

800 MHz 440EP could probably (maybe) reach 5000 CPU cycles, roughly 10000 CPU cycles (486DX performance) are needed for good Doom speed in fullscreen.

I can't seem to get the 'shift' key to work. For instance when I need to change directories, and the directory has a '~' (tilde) in the name, I can not get the character to show. The shift key is unresponsive. Any ideas?

@TheKorn

I experience this problem, but the exact effects depend on the AmigaOS keymap used, too (American keymap does not solve it however).

Hmm are you talking about Frontier Elite2? Is the PC version better than the Amiga version? On a peg2 1ghz how would the speed compare to say an a1200 030?

Yes.

PC version has textured objects (ships, buildings etc.). However, I don´t use textures at all. I use 4500 CPU cycles and medium details and the result is about the same as on my A1200. Your Pegasos 2 can probably run DosBox with more than 4500 CPU cycles.

Ok, I had to give it a try because of all the writing and it was too slow, guess that it would be playable with a 1.2GHz G4. Making the screen smaller would make it run well in smaller areas.

I hope I did not introduce problems.

Did you try to set "keyboardlayout=auto" or "usescancodes=true" ?

I am not comfortable with keymapping and how it is handled in dosbox.

@corto

Thanks to Thematic's suggestion, I loked into 0.73b's config and found "keyboardlayout=none". I tried this setting with 0.74 and now I can use the shift key to obtain capital letters, but for some reason the 'tilde' still does not respond. I will look into "usescancodes" as you suggest and see if that helps.

Thanks

EDIT - OK, just checked and found both versions have "usescancodes=false". Changing this setting to "true" cause my cursor to take off.

@TheKorn

You may need to use the tilde to move on directory with more than 8 chars lenght truncated. Should be possible to use alt+126 combination to reproduce the tilde char. If you want to move into directory and there is a tilde in the directory name, just press the initial one or two letters of the dir name, then press tab to complete the name.

"Frontier (DOS version)"

Ahhh, yet another game worth running in dosbox...

(IIRC, Frontier on DOS has better GFX and less bugs than Amiga version?)

update: and the old oolite porting etc thread: http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?mode=viewtopic&topic_id=28175&forum=32&start=20&viewmode=flat&order=0

It has textured ojects, but I rather use lower details. Less bugs? I don´t know... but I lost my nice ship in the DOS version because of some bug (thankfuly I had escape capsule and enough money to buy another ship ). Now I own Boa freighter and my bank account exceeds 4.5 milions credits...
