How can I enable the gl_ztrick option by default?

Open config.cfg in Notepad from the ID1/ directory. Enter gl_ztrick "1" near the bottom and save - that should do the trick. I've put this and gl_lockmode "AUTOMATIC" into mine.

More hints and tips here http://www.planetquake.com/frib/glquake.html

:edit2
For best results, set gl_lockmode to "Smart" and not "Automatic" or "Manual".

GlQuake 1 didn't work on my Voodoo3 with OS4update4. It didn't render the walls, and monsters and items were not redrawn properly.

I hope other people had more luck with their Voodoo boards.

Kind regards,

@AmigaPapst

I bought a 2ndhand Radeon7500 (128MB, no brand) and did some more tests:

Radeon 7500:
640x480 - 105 fps
800x600 - 87
1024x768 - 57
1280x1024 - 55
1600x1200 - 42

Radeon 9250:
640x480 - 102 fps
800x600 - 85
1024x768 - 57
1280x1024 -55
1600x1200 - 32

The Radeon7500 is often faster than the Radeon 9250! It doesn't suffer from the inverted lighting problem I had with the Radeon9250, and the 2d image quality is much better.

Kind regards,

Dennis

@AmigaPapst

I got these values:

1280x1024: 38,1 - 55,8 (with gl_ztrick)
1024x768: 45.8 - 65.1 (gl_ztrick)
800x600: 69.2 - 83.9 (trick)
640x480: 79.1 - 90.9 (trick)

My config was:

A1SE G3@666
ATI Radeon 9250 with 256 DDR 128bit

Tuxedo.

P.S. Quake console closed(up)...

@AmigaPapst

I've knocked together this list to show some real-world averages. Each test was run five times to account for any tasks getting priority over Quake (like YAM downloading email for instance).

System: AmigaOne XE G4 512Mb, Radeon 7000 32Mb

Key:
Standard: GL_Ztrick "0" and GL_Lockmode "Automatic"
GL_Ztrick: GL_Ztrick "1" and GL_Lockmode "Automatic"
GL_Lockmode: GL_Ztrick "0" and GL_Lockmode "Smart"
All: GL_Ztrick "1" and GL_Lockmode "Smart"

--

640 x 480
Standard - 31.20 fps
GL_Ztrick - 37.80 fps
GL_Lockmode - 50.80 fps
All - 68.87 fps

--

800 x 600
Standard - 24.10 fps
GL_Ztrick - 30.40 fps
GL_Lockmode - 34.80 fps
All - 48.76 fps

--

1024 x 768
Standard - 15.30 fps
GL_Ztrick - 20.60 fps
GL_Lockmode - 19.20 fps
All - 27.90 fps

:edit
I'll add in 320 x 240 and 1280 x 1024 as soon as I have the results run.

@all

Managed to grab a Saphire Radeon 9000 Pro 128Mb card off eBay for £13, so I'll install it and get more benchmarks posted.

@Crisot

Did you try GL_LOCKMODE SMART as well?

Still need to do some tested on my 9000...

1280x960 = 65,2 fps with Update 4

With AmigaOS 4.1
1280x960 = 67,3 fps. AmigaOS 4.1 speeds up a little bit.

@Max m3x Tretene
It is possible to create a minigl 2.0 Version of Quake 1?

When ever I've run GLQuake it always runs really slowly for me.

When I do the timedemeo demo1 it gives about 37 fps.

But when I actually play I get a stream of errors on the console saying can't find GFX/ENV/SKY.TGA (or something similar) and it ruuns very slowly. Virtually stalling in the start map as you approach the episode slip gates, and then sometimes locking up.

After a reboot the screen often stays blank, requireing a hard reset to get everything back.

I have AmigaOne XE G4 with a radeon 7000 and OS4.1 (behaviour was the same inder 4.0)

I just gave up and always used the software version. Would be nice to get it working just for the principle of it though.

I have the latest version from OS4depot (archive date 15jun05)

[edit]
I have ineterupts= YES inmy radeon icon

Radeon 7000 have not much performance. Take a Radeon 9000 and will have much more frames. ;)

@AmigaPapst

I'm sure the slow performance is not solely down to the Radeon 7000 (obviousy it doesn't help though, can't afford to upgrade at present, maybe put it on my Christmas List)).

The errors reports displayed mus br slowing things down.

Other GL games run faster (D2X for instance).

I have tested the new version of glQuake 1.09b7:
http://os4depot.net/index.php?function=showfile&file=game/fps/glquake.lha

Sorry but I cannot confirm that the new version is 10% faster. Problem with my configuration?

640x480= 109 fps
800x600= 97 fps
1024x768= 71 fps
1280x960= 64 fps
1600x1200= 48 fps

Please test it on your configuration and compare, thanks.

@AmigaPapst

I dont know about 10% faster, but the second episode was unplayable jerky with the previous version of GLquake on my sam440ep now it runs smoothly.

As a result I spent a few hours playing it yesterday and today and I am very happy with this update.

Same here!

I understand that you're experiencing issues with your USB mouse getting locked frequently at a resolution of 1024x768. It seems to be an issue common among users, so we can look into possible solutions or workarounds for this problem together. What specific steps are causing the lock-up?
