Battle For Wesnoth occassional lockups

All,

My wife really loves to play Wesnoth on my AmigaOne...but every once in a
while the game locks up. Sometimes she gets a grim reaper...sometimes nothing
but the machine just freezes.
She really loves this game...it is truly fantastic! Is anyone still actively
working on bug fixes for the OS4 version? Would an error log from GR help?

Thanks,

Scott

In my experience, it means that the system has run out of memory... it appears to load ALL the resources you need into mem while playing the game... 256MB ain't quite enough after a few levels.. it just doesn't seem to free up anything when it's done with it..

No additional files needed?

My Wesnoth drawer are becoming a mess, with various datafiles and executables.
I'll find out soon, though. :)

@afxgroup

There is something odd, though.

I tried the "South Guard" campaign, but there were some "invisible" units. The images are on the campaign drawer, but the program only looks in the main images drawer.
Should I copy the images to the main or is there a bug that prevents the program from looking in the respective scenario drawer?

Anyway, this new version is great. Not much faster, but with various improvements, mainly in the sound department.

Thanks for this great port, which will no doubt make me lose many productive hours... ;)

look at the output and eventually try in that way. However if you found a bug please report it on the official Wesnoth forum since i have no great time to play it and test the bugs..

@Scabit

I have never experienced a single Wesnoth crash. I have 512MB RAM, which surely helps.

What I do experience (particularly in recent versions) is huge slow downs in the AI rounds.
Example: each "Test of the Clan" round takes between 10 to 30(!) minutes.
I also get some "temporarily frozen damage labels". You know, the ones that show the damage taken by each unit. They sometimes stop midway for a few seconds, then keep moving.

Other than that, Wesnoth has been very stable.

Yes, I know. The slow down bug seems to be a known issue there.

I'll do as you say and copy the files to the main dir. Thanks.

I have 256Mb so it may really be the reason.

The 1.1.7 is remarkably slower than the last stable 1.0.2 on other platforms too, at least on Win. Well, it is an unstable ver so I reckon it aint optimised yet.

I wonder if there will ever be a stable Wesnoth version. It's been getting worse, so far. I never played it on a PC (and don't intend to), since I fear the increased speed would make playing it on OS4 less of a joy... :)

They seem to develop/update it quite fast, so I guess bugs can never be totally removed.

Having said that, hope Andrea can keep up with the ports.

Having played the PC version I can confirm that your fear is well placed.

@Rob

It was to be expected.
Still, the PC versions seem to suffer from the same bugs, it's just that the ultra-fast processors masks those out.

I wonder if there's a way to shut off the cache and autosaves. That could improve speed, from what I read in the forums(constant HD access).

Just kidding. A fair and deserved triumph.

@BrandonLee

The trouble is that my friends old 750Mhz Athlon with with Geforce MX4 runs this game faster than my 800MHz A1 with Radeon 9200. I think Toaks said it was something to do with the PC versions using hardware acceleration. I assume that this give more time to the CPU for AI, I'm not sure why loading and saving should take so damm long though.

edit

Funny thing I have noticed is that it takes longer for it to quit on my Mum's Athlon 2400 than on my A1. I tend to play it a lot when I visit.

Well done to Italy for winning and thankyou to you for your efforts to provide software for OS4. I'll try to make another paypal donation when I get some money again.
