Idea of the day: On Mac OS X, there's a recently added feature (new in Tiger I think) called Folder Actions, which lets you assign an AppleScript to be whenever something in the folder changes.

Wouldn't it be cool to have the same thing in Workbench? everytime a dir contents changes, an ARexx script is run? Does anyone know of any apps that do that already?

@Mobileconnect

Sounds like it would be good for writing viruses with. How is this feature used on the Mac?

@Mobileconnect

This should be easy to do with AmigaDOS notification and a bit of glue to run the desired AmigaDOS/ARexx script.

Somebody who isn't about to go to bed could probably knock it up in less than half an hour.

Chris

What actual benefit does it bring to the operating system? Chris_Y (Oops it was nzv58l I should look next time) aleady pointed out a negative side which suggests to me it to be a feature I'd rather do without.

Erm, no. If you think this could make viruses, then you've not understood at all.

but you can write an AppleScript which acts like an virus (eg. delete the new file)

I don't see any benefits of those mechanism...

Yes, or imagine you did such script and ... 2 years later you don't remember it (of course) so you wonder what happens to the file you copy in this folder.
This can be a nightmare

@elwood

Hehe, it would be very interresting to know an useful situation for such an feature...

edit2: Holy Crap! Apple has an 'automated backup' script for Folder Actions... *rofl*

delete the file -> delete the backup file
edit the file -> edit the backup file *rofl*

@cHaOs667

you can have it autogenerate an html file for your folder if you run a server.
you can have it notify you that a file has been added/removed/changed
you can set it to backup to lha on change
in the env-arc you can set it to backup settings to an compressed or encrypted file
you can set it to add default icons to all files that one don't exist.

you are only limited by your imagination

Ah, I can just hear my Amy talking to me in her quiet, sexy voice:

"Tony, where have you been? My spam folder has been partly filled again. Would you like to (snigger) look inside? Or why don't you just sit back and relax (long breathy sigh) and let me look after it for you?"

This is one thing which heavily depends on the speed with which folder actions acts. I would say that PHP is every time faster than folder actions with apple script...

Yeah great. I change/save an Document in that folder and got an message that there has been added/changed an file... great

That is an very stupid scenario. As example: You had an Image file and you edit it with the gimp. After you had changed the image 10-20 times you think that the original image would be the best and that youre lucky that you had an backup of that image.... great, an 10-20 times changed backup

For what? To store my password? In this case for what i should have an password if it is somewhere readable...

For this i don't need Folder Actions. AmigaOS is doing this automaticaly...

maybe folder action can cure cancer

you say that now but if someone created a virus changing random files to 0 bytes and you have this running you might have a chance to stop it.

who says it has to be handled like that? suppose you linked it to a backup folder. then you drag&drop to back it up. or a better idea don't save gimp pics to that folder until you are finished.

so amiga os has started linking actual info files for modification and not just default icons that are non editable/non snapshottable.

for compression not security tho if you burn it to cd nobody can open it without your password.

It highlights potential risks of data loss without proper backups. A backup strategy is essential for preserving important files over time.
