Hey folks, got an HP 19" Widescreen TFT Today, Anyhoo, I've tried using a monitor tooltype to setup a mode, to no avail, and when I use Picasso96mode I get a black band at the top, and the bottom of the picture, I've fiddled with all the settings, has anyone managed to use this resolution before?

Thanks

Robert

@Robert17

Search for threads explaining how to edit the tooltypes of your driver (radeon or voodoo).

You can edit your screenmodes using tooltypes instead since update #4. I've done
that and it worked great.

Look here for some ideas: http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=17863&forum=32

Use the settings from your manual regarding VSYNCMIN, VSYNCMAX and HSYNCMIN, HSYNCMAX.

I hope that it will be of some help.

@Robert17

I don't have a Widescreen TFT, but I do have a TFT with a native mode of 1280x1024. Just for fun I created a 1440x900 screen mode with Picasso96mode.

Picasso96mode will default to interlace mode "on", so I turned that off. Adjust the clock for a vertical frequency of 60Hz. After each change, run the "test" pattern & do a auto-adjust on the monitor. Most of the time you will only need to adjust the framesize. In my experience, the default framesize is too high, so if either the horizontal or vertical test pattern size is off, then lower the framesize in small increments, 20 to start. Each time re-adjust the clock for 60Hz & auto-adjust the monitor. The framesize adjustment interact so play with both a little at a time. It's a slow process.

My settings for 1440x900:
Clock = 103.70MHz
FrameSize = 1800 & 950
BorderSize = 0 & 0
Position = 16 & 2
SyncSize = 64 & 8
SyncPolarity = both off
Frequency = 58KHz & 60Hz

Make sure the horizontal frequency is within the spec of your monitor as my monitor is a different type.

The 8bit, 16bit, & 32bit settings are all the same. Hope this helps.

@sundown

That is really nice of you but I think that the new way of doing it where implemented
as an easier way of making new screenmodes. So why not use it?

And before you ask, I've used P96Mode a lot on my a4k and I prefer using the new
way sinse it's easier.... a lot easier that is.

I tried the monitor tooltype with my new TFT, but some of the modes I wanted would not work right, even after using auto-adjust. Picasso96mode is a real pain to use, but it was the only way I could get the modes that I wanted. I do hope they can get the new method working better with TFTs.

There's nothing wrong with the new method, you've just got to read the instructions. The tooltypes have to be added to the "Radeon" or "Voodoo" icon in Devs:Monitors. Once you've done that, you need never bother with Picasso96Mode again, and the driver will calculate the correct settings for you. If you make up your own figures, you may easily create modes that only look OK on a screen if you mis-adjust the controls. Such modes might not work with another monitor.

1) Fill in the limits for your monitor.
A mode will be ignored if it requires H and V frequencies that are outside the range of your monitor. So you have to include the tooltypes:
VSYNCMIN=56
VSYNCMAX=75
HSYNCMIN=30000
HSYNCMAX=61000
(or whatever the numbers are for your monitor)

2) Fill in the modes you want.
For your TFT, it's probably:
MODE=1440x900@60

This will generate a screen mode that appears in the Prefs/ScreenMode list, but NOT in the Picasso96Mode list. If you have a similar mode in the P96 list, you'll get both of them (the new and the old) in the ScreenMode list and it will be confusing. Any app that tries to open that screen mode will take the first mode with the right numbers, which may not be the one you want.

To check your new mode, look for it in the ScreenMode list and click "Test". To disable an old mode that is in P96, simply double-click the item in the list (making it inactive).

Don't forget to reboot to make sure that it all works.

@tonyw

Severin talked me into trying the new method again & I got it working. I swear it didn't work right the first time I tried. I just spent the last 3 hrs getting all my apps working again because they reverted to 640x480. I had to delete that mode just to get more real-estate to get to some apps pref setting. I got all the apps in amidock fixed at least.

It may be a better method, but making the change over is almost too much work.

@sundown

Well I've tried the same thing but no new resolutions appear in my Prefs/ScreenMode.

Lets see what I've done:

1.> I opened Devs/Monitors/Radeon icon with richt click icon "Information".
2.> I clicked on the Icon tab and have these settings over there:
-----
BOARDTYPE=Radeon
CMPLENGTH=6
(BORDERBLANK=Yes)
(BIGSPRITE=Yes)
(SOFTSPRITE=Yes)
IGNOREMASK=Yes
(DISPLAYCHAIN=Yes)
FAKENATIVEMODES=No
VSYNCMIN=60
VSYNCMAX=85
HSYNCMIN=31500
HSYNCMAX=64000
MODE=640x480@85
MODE=800x600@75
MODE=1024x768@72
MODE=1280x1024@60
MODE=1680x1050@60 <---- This is what I added
SETTINGSFILE=SYS:Devs/Picasso96Settings
------
3.> Pressed "Save"
4.> Rebooted the machine soft/hard
5.> After workbench was loaded I opened the Prefs/ScreenMode.

There was no 1680x1050 in the list.

Did I miss a step?

I don't have the "SETTINGSFILE=" tooltype since I don't use it. Could that mess
things up?

@sananaman

I also have similar problems with my new TFT. I have done everything "by the book" but I still
can't get it to display a screen mode that works on my Windows.

You requested a mode with 1050 visible lines, to be redrawn 60 times a second. That's 63,000 visible lines per second; Add about 3% for syncs and so on, and you are close to each line being 1/65,000th of a second long.

However, you told P96 that your monitor cannot handle lines shorter than 1/64,000th of a second. Which is probably why P96 ignored the mode.

The most likely solution seems to be to change HSYNCMAX to something more realistic, like75,000 or 84,000 (the latter being what my 1680x1050 Benq at work reports itself as capable of handling).

It seems a shame that P96 for OS4 does not seem support the DDC info channel --- monitors these days are quite good at reporting not only their capabilities, but even the precise timings for their preferred screen modes. The below is from the Benq 202W:

Given that information is readily available, having to manually create modes seems a bit 1999-ish.

@sananaman

Comment out the SETTINGSFILE=SYS:Devs/Picasso96Settings line & if that file is in Devs:, then rename or move it to storage. Verify that your modes still work.

My tooltypes:
BOARDTYPE=Radeon
CMPLENGTH=6
(SETTINGSFILE=SYS:Devs/Picasso96Settings)
(BORDERBLANK=Yes)
(BIGSPRITE=Yes)
SOFTSPRITE=Yes
IGNOREMASK=Yes
(DISPLAYCHAIN=Yes)
(FAKENATIVEMODES=Yes)
INTERRUPT=No
VSYNCMIN=50
VSYNCMAX=85
HSYNCMIN=30000
HSYNCMAX=82000
MODE=1280x1024@60
MODE=1280x864x32@60
MODE=1024x768@60
MODE=800x600@60
MODE=640x480@60

As umisef said, some screen modes are very picky, I haven't got 720x400 to work yet which is a dvd mode I believe. Play with the HSYNCMIN/MAX setting by tweeking them by small amounts. I also noticed that setting the vertical to @75 Hz hurt my eyes, but 60 Hz was fine, maybe because I us fluorescent lighting.

@umisef

Thanks UmiSef. I found the solution for my problem.

I changed the HSYNCMAX to 84000 as you said and it worked! Cewl.

---[Question-2]--------------------

BUT it leads me to one new question though:

"How can I run 4:3 or 5:4 resolutions without being stretched on the Wide Screen???"

I know my ATI X600 card on the PC can do that for me (it's probably the driver who handles that). It centers a 1024 x 786 on the screen and creates 2 black bars at each side of the screen, so that it isn't stretched anymore. In fact it is running in a wider resolution than 1024. This is needed in order to view the screens in the correct aspect ratio.

Any solution for this on the Amiga?

Is there a way that I can redefine all the 4:3 and 5:4 resolutions and present them in a "Wide-But-Aspect-Correct" manner?

To set up a new screen resolution with Radeon or Voodoo tooltypes: Add them under "Radeon" or "Voodoo" icon, input monitor limits and desired mode in Devs:Monitors. If the settings don't match your other monitors, they may not work correctly.
