@Morphix,

Took me a while but I found a better illustration here: " http://www.generaltools.com/862--3-Piece-Probe-And-Hook-Set_p_545.html " .

The one I have is a straight pick on one end and a hook on the other, around 250mm long with slim handle.
Got it from the Snap-On truck :)

@Morphix,
By the way, good idea to check the solder of the pins on the board as they can come a bit loose also. Harness weight can pull good over time.

My A1 had both "fixes" done to it. Is it possible to reverse the DMA fix?

@busytech

Why you eant to reverse it? To use a more modern gfx pci card?

I wonder why this fix makes those pci cards nt to work (see previous posts).

@Morphix

We never found out why it prevented a PCI gfx card from working. At the time (2004) we were more interested in fixing the interrupt problem caused when the on-board Ethernet and on-board IDE were operating at the same time. It turned out to be a bug in the VIA SouthBridge, which was designed for use with x86 components, not PPC. Its PPC support was not fully debugged.

As for reversing the "DMA hack", yes, of course, it could be done by anyone with a fine soldering iron and some bits of wire. All you would have to do is reverse the 3 or 4 steps taken previously, rejoin the tracks that were cut, etc.

@tonyw

Is there anywhere that lists and/or shows what exactly was done for the UDMA fix? ie Which tracks were cut and wire added?

I use a PCI card for the hard drives and so do not use the internal ide. I have an couple of higher end GFX cards I would like to put in to my A1.

@busytech

IMO it is not worth reversing the fix.

Chrck your pm.

@busytech,

A good look at the board will reveal what was cut and jumpered. You can always Carefully replace the traces back and forth to compare the operation of the machine.

Note: Most mods are on the underside of the board.

@Morphix

You've stated nothing on board is used. So I wonder, do you need any extra USB ports? And wish to keep using some A1 ports for that?

Given you aren't using the on board IDE, you won't need the DMA fix.

You can find out your CPU by using the clasic CPU command in a shell. Here's my G3 CPU.

System: PPCIBM PowerPC 750 FX (emulated MC68020/FPU) (INST: Cache) (External Cache)
Level 1 Cache size: 32768, Level 2 Cache size: 524288

@Hypex

It is not really that I need those fixes, it is that I just want a complete board, the best shape possible. I am planning to skip UDMA fix anyway, but the connector and USB fix are subjects to discuss :)

@busytech

No problem.

But think it twice before you reverse the fix, as you can see the fix is not an eassy task unless you are skilled and I guess the same goes for reversing it.

ANOTHER SMALL TOPIC: When I first got the board in my hands Iw as told by the original seller back on 2009 that it was a G3 module, so I guessed it was using a G3 CPU module. However on the sticker of the board I am noticing that the 7451 800Mhz PPC specs are written. I read that those specs match to a G4 model. Is there any safe solution to see if my machine is a G3 or a G4? Please see photo:

Is your XE one of the early boards that shipped with the audio codec in place. The sound works perfectly.

I have an Early bird board (those were the days) and mine doesn't have it. Perhaps I missed out with my Australian edition.

That made several people think that mistakes had been made on the board, but actually, the VIA SB documentation is wrong.

So the mystery is solved! In this case should there be both capacitors and resistors on the +/- data to earth lines?

I had my custom USB fix doing that for years, which added resistors to the internal USB header, but have removed it now and suspected it may have interfered with USB operations.

@Morphix

Fair enough then. I stopped using my A1 USB and disabled rear ports when I got a USB card. But was still using front A1 USB for my card reader. Now I've located a working USB2 card I don't use the A1 USB anymore and the card reader is hooked up to the card using some USB adaptors from AmigaKit. But a cable does have to run from the outside to the inside which is slightly lame.
