@djrikki

Perhaps later...
(I would like a board with no PCI & CF slots & cheaper, but in the Amigaworld people need to act ASAP, once they have the money.)

Also I would be interested in selling my SAM440 at the same time or to upgrade it to 460... might consider also SAM440 donation to some active developer...

Next Generation Amiga computers will probably need CF readers before too long. At the VCF the suggestion was that both the new machines are meant to be able to boot from an SD card. This has the added benefit of removing the need for a CD/DVD drive on the Sam460. Handy, since it only has one SATA port.

@elatour

The previous comment had me re-reading your earlier comments...

Oh well. That's too bad. Then I guess I won't be buying one until/if that "cool bonus" stuff actually turns into something interesting that Hyperion will choose to support somehow through included APIs for AOS4 and also hopefully by other 3rd paties developping for AOS4.

I've just tracked down the transcript of the AmigaRoundTable podcast, Trevor Dickinson told us that A-Eon intends to work on that part of the X1000. To quote Trevor:

TrevorQuote:
We've actually recieved a number of interesting suggestions for use of the Xena Xmos chip. One of the good things is we will be supplying a board to a developer who is going to produce the programming tools for that board. So that is very good. And, it is closely linked to the XMOS company itself. So that is good, but if you take a look at the Xmos website, there is a wide range for the use of these chips. And our partners Verisys are also thinking of various ways to exploit this chip. I particularly want there to be something that goes out with the first system. As a demonstration of an example of what can be achieved with our commercial systems. We are also upgrading the Xmos section and I'll give you more on that later.

So, good news, someone close to XMOS is porting the development tools to make use of Xena, the people whose idea it was to put it there in the first place have some ideas of their own and A-Eon want there to be a demo going out with the X1000 upon release.

Quote:
I'm not going to buy an expensive custom mobo again just to run AOS4 unless it and/or 3rd party AOS4 developpers leverage the custom XMOS hardware in new and innovative ways.

A very sensible position. We should buy these sort of things if they offer something unique, not because of any emotional link to a brand name. We shall have to wait and see what comes out, but I think A-Eon at least intend to achieve this.

Please point where I said XMOS on the X1000 would *not* be supported

BTW, in fact we have already heard the XMOS tools for OS4 are already in development.

I'm getting 1 as soon as they are on sale, then another probably
within a year. So that's 2...........but I only got to vote YES once.

This sucks.

OOoo! Yeah, that would be like 4 computers (and 4 votes).

Then I could stick in one of these http://www.varisys.co.uk/vs145.html
and have 5 cores all playing different music. Hmm, I wonder if MOS would
run on it.

This would be very interesting also.

I am very interested in buying X1000, I thought it will be out earlier but I was waiting pretty long so decided to spend money for 44inch LG plasma tv, here it costs just 550EUR :)

http://itsvet.com/proizvod/lg-42pj550-plasma-dvb-tv/comp_comp_monitor/9/2127

My idea is to put it on big room wall and connect via HDMI to my Acer laptop & use it for watching movies & work while lying on bed :)

Next year I will definitely buy X1000. Of course, it just needs to look cool, I am not interesting in buying anything Amiga just it has name Amiga sticked on it.

Yes, I WILL be buying an A1X1K eventually. My AmigaONE G4/XE failed last year and I was without it for some six months before it functioned again. Long enough to know that I wouldn't want to be without Amiga OS4.X

Yes, its nice to know Varisys have a track record of delivering these kind of hardware projects.

But I doubt those products would be much use as add-ons for the X1000. Remember, we'll already have 1.8GHz of Power Architecture processing ability. Twice that, once AmigaOS is updated to take full advantage of the new CPU, so plugging in extra CPUs probably won't have a good cost-benefit ratio.

As standalones, those products still aren't really ideal. The cost of re-engineering them from PCI cards into standalone computers probably wouldn't be huge, but then you'd have to add things like graphics and sound hardware to build a computer for the consumer market out of these expansion cards. For the VM31, that would add up to a massive cost, even compared to the X1000. Right from the start, costs would be higher - VM31 uses two PA6T processors, which would presumably cost much more than the 400-500 euros for the X1000 CPU.

For the VS145, it wouldn't be so bad. A 1.3GHz MPC745x combined with some audio-visual hardware like ACube's EyeMotion would make a nice portable solution, although not demonstrably better than a 1.1GHz AMCC460 with EyeMotion onboard, like the Sam460.

Sorry, I wrote a bit of an essay there, when all I really wanted to say was that Varisys probably used as much from those as was sensible when they designed the X1000.

For expansions to the X1000, I'd be more interested in seeing an XMP-64 from XMOS on a PCIe/'Xorro' card, connected and communicating with the Amiga system via the Xena coprocessor. As far as I can tell, the X-Links technology would mean that the software would simply see 'Xena, plus XMP-64 over Xorro' as '65-core Xena', scaling up the performance of whatever XMOS software you run accordingly and with less problems of diminishing returns than would be the case with traditional multi-core technology.

I am certainly no expert in this field, but if it actually does work like that then this would be a handy way to transfer number crunching to a powerful parallel processing system from within the Workbench environment. But regardless, there are plenty of other projects in the XMOS world that have some application as expansions to the X1000. I found www.xcore.com/projects to be very interesting reading, if only for the sheer variety in what people are doing with these things.
