As I wrote, my budget for this purpose is 2000 EUR, price of X1000 is 50 % highrer.

However, my point is, there are people who would buy such hardware even with similar price.

@pavlor

you could buy at least a SAM 460 for it (what is not bad from what people write). I only asked that because it is a little strange to me if people not owning one of the expensive devices say money is no matter. It is a matter for me and for a lot of other people too.

I was just in the financial position to get X1000 at the time. I'd still wish to see them knocking out similar hardware for a couple of hundred.

@Rob

custom design based on PPC for a couple of hundred? I do not believe that this is possible with the limited number of potential buyers right now. Or you have a big company behind it or someone taking the risk with a very very big pocket.

Only chance is to support a hardware already sold in big numbers and thus cheap (like the idea with the limebook). But there is propably nothing anymore.

Price/performance ratio of SAM460 is even worser than in the case of X1000...

I don´t have room for new big box anyway, so only "dream machine" (X1000) or something portable for me. X1000 was too expensive, I will wait for notebook. As loyal supporter of Amiga.Inc I´m used to be patient.

There are some relatively cheap boards based around P1013/1022 SoC (under 200 USD), but these aren´t suited for desktop use (and have incompatible FPU).

it would be underpowered or similar overprized than the X1000. No chance to get something affordable and competitive based on custom PPC design today. And I personally cannot imagine that Trevor (again) takes that high personal financial risks. He has his "dream" amiga already.

P1022 is not bad SoC. Two 1066 MHz e500v2 cores (integer single core performance similar to SAM460), audio and display controller etc. P-cubed board has price under 200 USD, it is not that expensive.

Sounds not that bad. The only problems (as far as I understand it) they expect the hardware vendor to pay for the port (what propably not will happen) and it would harm their partner Acube.

That would be probably least concern. As I wrote, FPU in e500v2 core is not compatible with other PowerPC CPUs - of course some sort of sloooow software FPU is possible. GFX part of this SoC is also weak (same DIU as in 5121e in LimeBook): 1280x720-24bit (2D only). Useable for limited internet browsing and emulation (UAE, DosBox), but certainly not like normal PC (like SAM460).

@pavlor

then they still need someone that pays the port. If the hardware is too limited it will not attract many potential buyers outside the hardcore AmigaOS community and then we talk about a couple of hundred potential buyers. I do not know what they calculate for doing a port (including drivers) and if that revenue is interesting to Hyperion.

I think opposite. Some people would like to try AmigaOS 4, but its current entry cost is prohibitive. This could be solution. On the other hand, it would be too limited to show strong points of OS4 (eg. compositing).

if the hardware is too limited and potential customers see it (or hear it from first customers) would that not be negative for AmigaOS and Hyperion? It should be at least usable to some degree.

I have Sam 440ep Flex it very nice little machine, powerfull enough for my use, web surfing and watching avis. It still has best hardware support and when OS4.2 appears it possible add Radeon HD card to it, unlike Eyetech AmigasOnes.

You can get second hand Sam Flex very cheap.

@OlafS25

Fact is that we (OS4 users) are some kind of betatesters. There is no sense to produce PPC hardware for other than hobbyists before OS4 is more mature.

With produce PPC hardware I mean high volumes(> 10 000), wich would make price more atractive.

@wawa

I meant the netbook. :) (corrected my post before).
OK, maybe not "lots", but I know of at least a few. I can't say more though I'm afraid - that's up to them.

as i said, i dont actually doubt that they might have something in their hand at a given point of time. still the outcome is practically equal to what we have of that moana project. nothing.

btw, how are you prohibitted to tell more? nda? you have not seen the netbook urself but know the people who did.. right?
