Desktop Linux is good for testing the hardware's feature set.

Exactly. OS4 hasn't the same Linux drivers, which are provided by cards/chip vendors too.

nope... or better say yes and no... on ppc there are not the same drivers of x86... catalyst and cuda are not presents . the video drivers are made by the community ... this why i was really happy about the amd opensource news about the drivers.

@tlosm

Could you please use descriptive thread titles in future instead of "What is this???" etc?

EDIT: Thanks Tlosm!

@g01df1sh

Just for info. There are two groups which works for A-Eon Technology Ltd. The A-EON Core Linux Support Team is responsible for the Linux support. Hyperion is responsible for AmigaOS 4.1. The development is separated between the two groups.

@xeno74

Here's a valid question then if there are two teams one doing Linux and the other doing OS4. Will Linux support stop development once OS4.1 / 2 is on the same level as Linux. Eg once OS4 has SMP and full GFX support why would there be any need for Linux?

It's also pretty good for running FS-UAE and hosting AROS.

@g01df1sh

Linux and MorphOS (only X5000) are additional operating systems for our NG Amigas. You have the opportunity to use another operating system beside AmigaOS 4.1. This is an additional offer for our customers. Please note: The Core Linux Support Team has nothing to do with Hyperion. We are a part of A-EON Technology.

@xeno74

What's the chances of OS4 being done in house at A-eon. I feel progress is so slow with Hyperion they only pipe up when source code gets leaked.

Given you are calling them "our" NG Amigas, would you be able to speak to this, at least as to how you perceive the status of Linux on your NG Amigas atm?
I'm sure status on other operating systems would be appreciated as well, but I don't think people expect you're the one to report on those.

The X5000 already has working Debian and SliTaz Linux PowerPC ports and we expect it will support many other PowerPC Linux distributions in the future. Likewise, I have always wanted to see MorphOS and AROS running on our hardware and it's good to see this finally coming to fruition.
June, 2015 Source

Since it's clear any statement regarding AmigaOS 4.x on X5000 has to come from Hyperion and since I've seen mention of the other operating systems in other threads...

Would it be possible to update the progress on those other operating systems running on X5000 given the interest expressed both from others and yourself?

So, actually it's no. But I bet that it'll be still no.

In fact, from very long time there are open source drivers for nVidia and AMD GPUs, but AFAIK nobody ported them to OS4 or other post-Amiga o.ses. What makes you think that the situation will change only because AMD has opened its drivers?

For non-mainstream o.ses the best solution is represented by Gallium, albeit it's not optimal (the performance can be 1/10 of the vendor's drivers).

Since someone is already working on porting Gallium to OS4, you only have to wait another 2 more weeks...

Christian ... 15.10 NOT Frizing any more I FOUND THE WAY ... yea! ... this is the 4650HD gigi@gigi-desktop:~$ glxgears Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate. 44964 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8992.782 FPS 46205 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9240.932 FPS 45590 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9117.847 FPS 45314 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9062.760 FPS

What are you watching is the result of the new drivers of AMD opensource ... before was 1/8 of the performance ... PS: this is the quad on X5000 everything will be much much better ... belive me :P

@tlosm: the problem, as I tried to underline, is all of that is related to Linux, and not to OS4.
