Yes it is a closed source project and I personally am convinced thal any commercial OS projects in such a small market fail. And then the "super-niche" hardware strategy was wrong in the past, is wrong and will be wrong in the future...
Even if it would published by Commodore, what would be the benefit for the users? 99.999999 % of users do not care about "heritage", if there is 68k code used to develop a OS or not. They have either never heard of "Amiga" or are using PCs or Macs today (both X86). How do you want them to buy new (expensive) hardware just to run AmigaOS? If that would have been the case AmigaOS would be in another position. Either AmigaOS is ported to standard hardware or it is only something for a few hundred enthusiasts that are left. well, then someone needs to go ahead and try to run aros on that fpga arcade. you have the hardware. so its up to you.Last edited by wawa on 28-Aug-2012 at 03:37 PM.

If that AmigaOS 4.1 was published by Commodore-Amiga Inc, will you say the same? |
yes. if it was managed like that. commodore amiga was in time of its decline a flourishing platform in comparison to os4, not to talk of aros or mos, or the scene in general. this all apparently due to the fact that majority of people stick with so called "official platform" that is able to deliver nothing but delays. first it was amiga inc and today its hyperion. all worthy alternatives like amithlon or morphos have been dismissed. its enough. time is up. |

Price would be definitely deciding factor. However, judging by recent CyberstormPPC prices (over 1000 EUR), even 500 EUR could be considered cheap. I ever wanted to buy BlizzardPPC for my A1200, but I had no money 14 years ago. Ability to run most recent version of AmigaOS on my good-old A1200 would be more than tempting. |

You talk about the hardcore-fans (that regard everything below 1000 EUR as "cheap" ). Outside people think very very different... |

Unfortunately, it's rather not possible legally for AOS4 to go open-source as Hyperion is not the owner (sole owner) of the legacy code, AFAIK._________________ "Marxism must abhor nothing so much as the possibility that it becomes congealed in its current form. if they wanted they could at least opened part of the code and used open-source code from Aros (like MOS). They had a different strategy (hardware and OS) and opensource was certainly never a part of.
I understand from what I read that some have a emotional connection to AmigaOS (because it is called AmigaOS) but that is not really persuading people outside. |

They're is no point to hate MorphOS, or AmigaOS 4.x or 68k AmigaOS. We all have AmigaOS 3.1 as a base. _________________

i own a cyberstorm ppc. i considered it a waste of money all the way long and though i bought it some day and now im sure its a waste of money. you can see it in the video. the on ly reason i prefer it over my both others cs_mk1s is that its compact and its faster scsi controller. and that im too lazy to sell it. ppc side actually does not get any use these days.Last edited by wawa on 28-Aug-2012 at 04:37 PM.

I do not "hate" AOS (or MorphOS) but I think they are on the wrong path and have no real future. Other people can have different opinions but when somebody starts with phrases like "only" and "true" I do have the right to respond. |

Today, I would not use my A1200 even with new CPU card as main computer, it has its age and deserves some rest. However, I would probably consider buying semi-modern PowerPC card to run OS4, only to have it inside. For real work I use other computers. |

Actually no-one has a bright future. If you think that AROS has a bright future, then you're living in another world. _________________

please not take it as insult but one programmer of the class of jason attracted from the outside might well out-weight all the, beg your pardon, bedroom coders visiting this site, not to talk of people who just brag about and have no real interest or idea about that real thing. you know who i mean. its a shame aros has not enough publicity and even in this community is treated literally, as cinderella. openness is the only way to attract fresh blood, which is there somewhere. but they will not come to sign ndas on their hobby projects.Last edited by wawa on 28-Aug-2012 at 04:51 PM.
