| -It seems to be T2080 based (about 43 000 MIPS) -Freescale has "given" them RDB for development (sounds very serious!) -GPU is most likely some RadeonHD on a MXM card
I estimate the price of the notebook to be above EUR1000.
+ Previously I thought their design partner is ACube. But as freescale seems involved by giving RDB board, the partner might be some vertical market company from military side. I'm 60% sure that the partner is ACube anyway.
+ I believe, internally they also consider T2081, because it's pin compatible with cheaper options. (other products of the partner)
(I'm usually wrong in my predictions, but so far not 100%) Last edited by KimmoK on 01-Jun-2015 at 07:05 AM. Last edited by KimmoK on 01-Jun-2015 at 07:04 AM. Last edited by KimmoK on 01-Jun-2015 at 07:02 AM.

Funny thing, this notebook, if it ever comes out, will be faster than X5000/40. Really bad timing by A-eon to have chosen the e5500 core before e6500 was available in quantity. Last edited by WolfToTheMoon on 01-Jun-2015 at 06:49 AM.

It will be faster if/when SMP is used. Otherwise x5000 is faster. Varisys had already a working P5020 HW, that's why that SoC was chosen.
+ I believe x5000 will be at the hands of end-users more than one year before that notebook. Last edited by KimmoK on 01-Jun-2015 at 06:57 AM.

T2080 goes up to 1.8 Ghz, while P5020 clocks at 2.2 Ghz. Considering e6500 core packs some minor improvents over e5500 + it has Altivec I don't see it that P5020 will be faster thread vs thread. _________________

Perhaps I was wrong saying x5000 would be clearly faster.
In integer: -e5500 core 2,2Ghz delivers 6600MIPS -e6500 core 1,8Ghz delivers 5940MIPS
Altivec boost is 20% in average so, yes they would be pretty close. And pure multimedia (video encoding/decoding) should be faster on 1,8Ghz e6500.
+Time will tell how fast they can run T2080/2081, RAM and GPU in a notebook. Last edited by KimmoK on 01-Jun-2015 at 07:48 AM.

E6500 wasn't even sampling when A-EON started on the X5000 and this guy has so far only just got his development/evaluation system so if this does happen it's probably quite some time before it will be available. |

IMO it would have been wise to skip e5500 alltogether and wait for the e6500 to become available, especially since X1000 is still competitive in performance to X5000. Now they have a very expensive board with a SIMD-less CPU, and they cannot reuse it for a possible e6500 based successor. And T2080 is available at little over 100$ in quantity, a FAR better choice for the mid-tier X3500 than the P3041, which is 32bit only and has no Altivec. _________________

There exist very few PA6T chips to build computers. So, they needed something that is in production.
>And T2080 is available at little over 100$ in quantity,
It's 100..130USD without tax etc.
e5500 is anyway good 64bit core. (X5000 should deliver about 2000MIPS more per core than X1000)
And you get chips based on those cores for some USD40+VAT&TAX&etc, so, supporting e5500 is the best idea to get HW price down (today) in PowerPC world. (IMO)
> a FAR better choice for the mid-tier X3500 than the P3041
IMO, P3041 would be waste of effort. P5010 should be used in the cheapest x5000 variant. Last edited by KimmoK on 01-Jun-2015 at 01:40 PM.

As well as the DMIPS score mentioned by KimmoK, the X5000 also significantly outperformed the X1000 when running the Cow3D demo. |

It would be awesome if their design partner was ACube, or even A-EON!

I really wonder what company would be interested in PowerPC laptop (not counting the two you mentioned). From pure business point of view, it is insane. |

Yes. It initially looks like that. But there is more weird things that have succeeded in their targets, even if not making business millions.
@laptop kind of product
I know the motherboard must be as slim as possible, but what can be considered as the absolute maximum height?
Is PICO PSU pointing upwards from motherboard too high? How about SODIMM pointing upwards on motherboard? _________________ - KimmoK // For freedom, for honor, for AMIGA // // Thing that I should find more time for: CC64 - 64bit Community Computer? |

One thing comes to mind. PowerPC is still alive in some form or another. But it is not portable. Well not in the usual way. So this makes a neat package for a portable PowerPC computer. Where that is useful for portable testing and development is where this device would come in to be handy. |

I don´t think so. Laptops are consumer products, this one is hobby product without clear target. Who are customers for this? How many people will buy one? (not even speaking about price...) |

Too thick is subjective, but I'll hazard a hell-yes: including socket that's around 45mm or so. I suppose it depends how retro you want to go, but add a keyboard, bottom case, screen... a >50mm thick laptop? I don't think even my Pentium 2 Compaq piece'o'crap was that thick.
Horizontal real estate will cost you less, just use a 90degree SODIMM socket like everyone else.
PicoPSU would be insane - why use all that space, just put the power regulation circuitry on the motherboard and use a DC supply, like everone else.
(There's a pattern of not reinventing the wheel going on here )
@Thread
Hmm... Is the picture taken in the bedroom meant as irony, or is it actually a bedroom project? Last edited by Boot_WB on 02-Jun-2015 at 03:56 PM. Last edited by Boot_WB on 02-Jun-2015 at 03:53 PM. Last edited by Boot_WB on 02-Jun-2015 at 03:51 PM.
