@Karlos

Love the ammo counter flashing up at the bottom in full screen! Legend!

@BigD

You need to define a 320x256 mode if possible.

There is some work to do to better support lower screen heights, down to 320*200. If you are in 320*240, you might need to adjust the vertical margin (number pad+/-)

Another update to the binaries:

https://github.com/0xABADCAFE/karlos-tkg/tree/misc/redesign/Game/bin

This update pretty much eradicates the polygon model glitching. It may even be a tiny bit faster as the glitching was caused by polygons that are no longer clipped and rendered.

And here I am sucking at it, but at least there's no polygon glitches. Just a couple of wall/sky/floor ones. This level was especially riddled with polygon model glitches before the fix:

After a bit of time away from the project, I have finally finished reworking level C and merged back into main.

Level C is now the engineering deck of the doomed (?) orbital facility that the Indomitable is docked with. It has been retextured to appear mostly new, functional but abandoned with some areas corroded due to leakage or corrupted by the breed.

The overall 2D layout is still mostly the same as the T17 original, though the bizarre discohall behind the blue key area is now replaced with a databank type area that's a homage to System Purge, one of my favourite levels in AB3D1.

There are a number of secret areas to be found and the central loop is more of an atrium with lower and upper areas.

The level is completable from a pistol start and heavier weapons are available.

A sneak preview https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUSfF4krDdo

My machine was not having the best day when I captured this.

On reflection, It might be slightly too difficult. I might have to add a few more health kits.

@Karlos

Ok, let us know when it's pushed to the redesign main and I'll give it a go!

@BigD

I already merged it all back into the main branch. I'm just wondering if it's a bit too tough. I died in 2/5 playthroughs.

Note that the misc/redesign branch is always for work in progress stuff.

Looks like I will need to update it, I just found another way to deadend the level. It's possble to reach an area via a secret that if you haven't already opened, is locked from the other side.

This is why I need playtesters.

Fixes pushed and merged. There shouldn't be anh way to explicitly deadend the level now.

For anyone not following along on EAB, there's an updated engine drop. It contains 020+, 040 and 060 versions. Presently these are only available on EAB, but I think most people have accounts on each forum. If you use 060, the 060 build is recommended as it has very specific inner drawing optimisations.

The main feature this time round is to address frame rate drops that happen when the game draws things that end up hidden behind a nearer wall. This happens more than you might think. Work on this problem area is still ongoing but it has reached a point of stability I felt was worth a release.

There are also some fixes for the FPS counter. Firstly the fractional part was incorrect. It has been moved to a less inconvenient location on the display and can be turned on and off via the Custom Options menu.

Depending on how old your current version is, you may also not know that the settings are now saved to prefs.cfg which is a human readable settings file.

Have fun.

@Karlos

...will we be up from 12-15 FPS on a 060/50 RTG in 2-player now do you think?

@BigD

You tell me! Right now, single player benchmarks in real hardware would be appreciated, especially comparisons against any prior versions.

Mileage is going to vary but this guy is getting around 15-22 fps* in single player, on a slightly outdated version of my mod.

https://youtu.be/scQuXhKxRw4?si=FNXwQH5wsJWTQcH9

However, according to the description, it's a 100MHz 060.

The frame rate dips caused by closed doors is still very conspicious, which is the next thing I aim to try and address.

*Having fully watched I'd say it's more like 20-23 FPS with the occasional dip to 15.

@Karlos

Great! I'd think a 060/50 RTG might hit 20 FPS in 2-player which would be great!

I'm too busy to test right now! I'm busy building Worms DC custom maps for the Worms DC V1.5 release in Jan 2025 for the 30th anniversary of Worms! Fancy making a AB3D 2 Redux map?

17-25 are reported for single player on 060@50MHz with BVision.

Other RTG solutions might be a little slower, the BVision has the best VRAM write speed of any legacy A1200 PCI solution that I've seen.

@Karlos

Does Alien Breed 3D 2 run on 68LC060?

5 fps difference is relatively minor. Just need a cheap and strong CPU power.

Commodore management rejected Dave Haynie's 68EC040 glue chips proposal for 1992 release.

68EC040-25 was price like Intel 386DX-33 and AMD Am386-40.

Dave Haynie's 68EC040 glue chips would set the necessary mass-produced infrastructure for the follow-on 68EC060, 68LC060, and 68060.

1994 68EC060-50 was priced like 1992's Am386-40 prices i.e. $100 wholesale. The PC world has fast 486DX4 and AMD's 5x86 (fast 486DX with larger cache and higher clock speed) to counter 68EC060-50.

@Hammer

Not aware of any reason it wouldn't. It doesn't use any floating point operations.
