@JamieKrueger

Hi Jamie,

Thanks for the positive feedback, and also the valuable advice! As we progress on the path of making these projects a reality (and if we get the money for the A1's) I shall certainly be following your suggestions. And I shall indeed remember the offer of help if at any time I need to call upon it...

Indeed, my story is so mad, that part of it involved me writing a four page story in my 1st year Electromagnetism exam when I realised I couldn't answer of the actual questions bar one - "Candidate number______________"

Needless to say, I never passed that module...

That's the whole point of this initiative - or at least one of the main ones. For us to get software in the short-medium term for our platform of choice, and to educate future programmers, thereby increasing our chances of further development in the long term.

Plus, it just sounds like so much fun - damn am I excited!

OK, everyone. So far I've only yet received one piece of constructive criticism, and have since updated the email. I shall wait over this weekend for any further feedback, and then I shall send this off on Monday morning.

We need this to be as good as possible, in order for us to maximise our chances of success. So let's get thinking and constructively criticising!

OK, progress report:

The application deadline for the College Teaching Fund expired in March...

BUT...

My Head of Dept. said that when I get back from India we will see if we can afford at least one kit to get us started. I can in the meantime put together an application for funds for the March 2006 deadline to purchase more AmigaOne's (or whatever may be available by then).

They have also suggested I contact the Dept. of Computer Science for possibility of collaboration on this project.

Looking promising so far...

Regards,
Piyush

@captainmoomoo

I'm too knackered to read the whole thread, so forgive me if this has been suggested already.

Maybe you could set up a linux distro with a fully functioning AROS-hosted development environment?

I teach C/C++ too, but my students are Year 1HND and Year 1 Foundation Degree students, and i think if I suggested something similar they'd have heart failure!

@nicholas

Sounds like a good idea if the plan to buy an A1 falls through.

From what I understand (which is not much) about AROS is that it's meant to be source code compatible with OS3.1? In that case it would probably be a better option than developing on an emulated environment.

The only question then is how much more work would be necessary to get the results of the various projects running on OS4?

Thanks for the suggestion!

Well, from what I hear you just have to add a conditional #define to any 3.1 source to make it compile on OS4. AROS is 3.1 source compatible so the same would be true to a great extent.

And with it being open source, you could "market" it to your students a bit more easily than some closed source proprietary os that costs a fortune for a student to buy the neccessary equipment to run it, or the alternative of an "ancient" OS for a dead computer.

I know my students,, and that's how they react when I talk about Amiga stuff to them.

Hi everyone.

Just to let you all know that I am flying out to India today for my wedding! I won't be back for a couple of weeks, so nobody think that all has gone quiet because the project is a flop - I shall be back at work soon enough, and trying my absolute best to make this idea a great success.

Take care guys and think of me on my big day (3rd June),
Piyush

Best wishes for the wedding.

I worked with a guy called Piyush at Sky about 5/6 years ago, never met anyone before or after with the same name. Not you is it?
