I respect your decision to go that route but I'm wondering where the "other" 60 or so people who voted "YES" to pre-ordering Papyrus OS4 if it was going to happen (the last poll not this one) I guess most people are full of ####, talk the talk but don't walk the walk

Great! Looking forward to the release!
As to your other comment, I think more and more users are realizing the fact that sometimes you have to pay for good software for more software to be made. Personally I don't think there will be such a big problem for OS4 software. This is a dedicated audience you've got here.

I'm not having a go at people who will wait for it's release before purchasing (probably the most sensible option after all), it was aimed at people who said they would pre-order it in the first poll then conveniently vanished when it was available to pre-order!
Oh well at least we have reached the minimum 60 required so let's hope the job gets done and we get a modern office package for OS4 sometime soon(ish)

I ordered it three time by mistake - if we're short then I'll keep with the original 3 copies

To be fair to people the previous poll question was: " Would you buy a native OS4 version of Payrus?" and answering this question with "Yes" does not mean people would like to make use of any kind of pre-order scheme (also some may not own supported credit cards, may first need to save up some cash, etc).
IMO we reached the requested pre-order amount in a relatively short amount of time (only one news item here at AW was needed), especially considering this is an office suite most Amigans are yet te become familiar with. Having many more pre-orders than the requested 60 isn't needed (and IMO not really desirable).Last edited by MikeB on 02-Jul-2005 at 10:41 AM.

I must say that you are right about this one ! I'm sorry if I offended anyone.
Still, I don't think a lot of people will actualy order Papyrus when it's released. I realy hope that I'm wrong though !
Cheers,

it's always been like that , people vote jut to get the software out but when they all of a sudden asks for you to pre order (though no money is beeing taken) then they back out, it happened with Simon The Sorcerer 2 (oh yes that was a nasty one) and there was several others who expected to sell 100's but when the day came.... far from thoose numbers where sold.
you know, the day they voted may have been their paycheck day and they felt rich...until they noticed that they had a heap of bills running overdue...

so what do you base this on?
lets say 70 people pre ordered and paid and then there is thoose who would wait for the release and then buy, some people will wait until they have the money...others will start asking about a demo and then someone just buys it randomly.
if its a quality product and marketed properly then people will buy it at a steady rate but you cannot expect that Every AmigaOne owner will buy this package or even 50% of them.
Atm the OS4 market aint growing because there is no hardware and well when we have hardware again then people might be interested in an office suite and if its available they will get whats available or turn to an really old package they know (like final writer) because they failed to notice papyrus was released.
Sound tools like AE4 and office packages like papyrus is for niche markets, its not common ware unless its bundled with the machine u buy... (why do you think microsoft office is bundled with most deals you buy? , its not because people have a hard time finding it in the shops but the fact that people wont buy it unless they have to).
i put my money where my mouth is but i certainly wont use papyrus for more than..well 1 hour a month tops though that might change but i certainly dont have a need for a tool like this except for maybe viewing stuff from word users. (i only wanted it to support it beeing developed + i know there is users out there who needs this tool/app.)

Why do you think so? What are the alternatives if you need a proper office suite on the Amiga? I think when we get an up to date (ish) browser and an office suite, the Amiga alternative will be slightly more attractive to the office-minded people. |

Of course voting on a poll is a lot less scary than opening your wallet, especially if some moths crawl out of there.
But I believe when done right Papyrus for AmigaOS4 will sell relatively well. A1 owners seem to be really dedicated folk and it's not like the A1/OS4 pre-release came extremely cheap. For instance Hyperion already stated that their Amiga PPC software outsold their Linux x86 (alledgedly a much, much more huge potential market) counterparts by a factor 10!
Would be nice if they would be able to optimize Papyrus for the thousands of classic PPC owners as well, IMO this could trigger some significant additional OS4 sales when OS4.0 final is released. Papyrus already runs well enough on lowly powered 68k classic Atari-compatible systems. Last edited by MikeB on 02-Jul-2005 at 11:56 AM.

Yup, another Dutchie here. And you know how cheap the Dutch are, so no pre-order from my side.
Currently I have invested some money in Clie (Palm). We will see when things materialize and when I can post some more details about this. This is in co-operation with 2 guys that are not unknown in the Amiga world...
My priority is not with an Office suite at the moment. But I have to admit if Open Office OS4 would materialize I would go for it. Currently I am only using Final Data.
But I will put the money where my mouth is.
Since the Amizilla project is making progress I will donate to that project, as this is my main niggle with OS4 at the moment, no browser with CSS support. UPDATE: Done
I am also going to donate some small amount to the author of FlashMandel and see if that can persuade him to start working on an Altivec version. Eventhough the number of G4 OS4 users is capped currently, I think it is important to let the people see the power of this CPU extension.
And last but not least, the offer of 50 dollar or euro for the one(s) that write(s) an USB2 driver for OS4 still stands. |

I voted no. that does not mean i'll never get papyrus for my a1 but i won't buy till it's actually been shipped. reason i ordered pagestream v.4 for os4 ppc over 2 years ago all i have for it is 68k version. now they talk all about version 5 there but where is my version 4?? i expect the same would happen with papyrus buy now wait 10 years or until the buyer gives up. and i have just about written off the pagestream purchase as lost money.

There won't be a PPC version of PGS4. The policy is to keep versions in line with each other across the different platforms supported.
Although I'm looking forward to the OS4 native version, the 68k one runs fine here at a good speed.
IIMHO PageStream is an outstanding app that deserves everyone's support. _________________ Happiness is mandatory. MindSpace: MindMaps and UML diagrams for OS4
