@aldur

I have the same problem with my MicroA1 too and have never been able to correct the issue.

One more reason why the MicroA1 hardware blows chunks!

@aldur

I pretty much assumed that it was hardware related seeing as I have always had this left speaker crackle, even when doing nothing or even while booting up or while in UBoot.

I have to admit that I was curious to try that new sound driver update that came out a week or so ago, but since I had relegated this to a specific hardware problem that at first I thought I was the only one encountering it, I gave up the idea.

I'll try it out and see if this makes any difference though.

@elatour

Well, I just downloaded and installed the CMI8738 v5.16 update from OS4 Depot and I'd like to say that it made a difference, but saddly this is not the case.

Correction: When I start the AHI prefs utility, the crackling goes away and stays away during subsequent warm OS4 reboots. Once I either cold reboot or warm reboot the entire system though, I get the same issues. Is there anyway to address this?

Are these two part of a package on OS4 Depot? I found them in the appropriate drawers on the back-up CD I made of my old AmigaOS 4.0 pre-release update #3 system, just before I installed update #4. I'm sure I downloaded them once before long after I installed update #3.

Your experience is logical. Those files -are- a part of the ahi_usr package on OS4Depot.
They were -not- included on the update#4 ISO in the contrib drawer. (which is why I
remind people of where to get them.)
You have them, indeed, from your prior installation. Just copy them over. You need
these for your system to operate as before.

Experimental_2 is the current version, and there were 3 updates after the original

Perhaps, in the next uboot firmware update, which is currently in beta-testing.

@DaveAE

Please explain why ahi.device 6.6 is in the ahi_usr archive at OS4Depot, while there
is still a separate standalone archive of version 6.2 on OS4Depot.
Are you recommending people "fall back" to the older version under certain conditions?

@thread

My MicroA1-C has a IBM PPC 750 GX cpu and is running at 800 Mhz. Otherwise standard 256 MB RAM, onboard electronics, no add-on cards.

I did not have any crackling in either speaker, before or after installing the new CMI8738 V5.16 on OS4Depot.

I'm using the speakers I got with my IBM Aptiva pc. They are very old now and powered by a separate 12 V power supply. Just simply left and right speaker arrangement, plugged into the light green (line out) audio connector on the back of the MicroA1-C.

My machine is hooked up to a router and it is online whenever it is powered up. I use AWeb for surfing the net, downloading, etc. So far, I am not running any background network activity such as web server, BBS, mail or dnet. I am using PS/2 keyboard, PS/2 mouse, 1024X768 screen resolution, default Workbench background, have added a few tools to AmiDock, have set AmiDock for transparent background, no boarders, so dockies appear to float on the background, standard stuff in WBStartUP (except I added ClickToFront and Mixer, deleted ASyncWB from update#4 and now using ASyncWB from update#3). Using April 1, 2006 release of a1ide drivers, using USB stuff supplied in update#4.

@elatour

In case anyone else is interested, specially those novices to Amiga audio like myself, after picking up on what another poster stated about having Mixer in their WBStartup folder and how the crackling disappeared once it loaded from WBStartup, I decided to download and try this utility from OS4 Depot after having updated my CMI8738 audio driver also from OS4 Depot, and it corrects the problem each time I do a cold reboot.

In any case, you have the option of either adding it to your WBStartup folder or S:User-Startup file.

In my case, I copied the Mixer folder to Sys:Utilities and I added the following lines to my S:User-Starup file:

;BEGIN Mixer
run <> nil: Sys:Utilities/Mixer/Mixer SETLEVELS
;END Mixer

If you want to run it as a Commodity, you'll probably want to set it's CX_POPUP icon parameter to No instead of the default of Yes, and use the Popup key or the Exchange commodity to bring up the interface when needed.

You'll find that the crackling will only be present during a cold boot or warm system restart (CTRL+Left-ALT+Right-ALT).

Not sure if it was the audio driver update or just the fact that I initialized AHI with Mixer or the AHI prefs utility that corrects the problem, so you may want to just try getting the Mixer if you have OS4 Update 4 and see if this alone does the trick for you.

@elatour

Just to make things clear, it's not really the code of Mixer that 'solves' it. Mixer just opens AHI device (like AHI prefs would when you first run it) which calls all installed drivers to initialize the sound card/chip(s).

@number6
So far there are no plans to make changes to u-boot regarding this. I hope people can bear with a few seconds of crackling before OS4 starts.

A new ahi user archive should have replaced the 6.2 ahi.device on OS4depot.

Yes, what I did in the latest cmi driver was mute the FM stream, which seems to produce garbage even when it's not used.

No I have ahi.device V6.7 installed from the site. I had the ahi.device V6.6 installed but decided to try the beta.

DVPlayer 0.51 Registered
MPlayer - 1.0pre7.004 (26-01-2004) (C) 2000-2005

The sound is fantastic until it comes to running a movie.

There -is- a ahi_usr archive with ahi.device version 6.6 on OS4Depot.
But there is -also- a standalone ahi.device version 6.2 also on OS4Depot.
Search OS4Depot for "AHI" will show this.
Shouldn't the 6.2 version be removed then?

Re:MPlayer
Please try DP#5 or the new experimental version:
http://www.amigasoft.net/pages/mplayer/mplayer.asp

With DP#5 use Deniil's GUI version 1.31 (April, 2005) or version 1.33 (may not
be completely compatible as 1.31 with DP#5).
With the experimental version use Deniil's GUI version 1.40 (March, 2006) only.

In either case, set audio in the GUI to "sdl".
Please let us know the results.

Re:the beta of ahi.device you are using. I would recommend testing and getting
everything running properly with version 6.6 first. Later you can substitute the
new beta.

I use soundblaster on my g4XE and there's alot of noise. sounds like it's picking
up movements from the fan. I just have ot put the earphone on with no audio playing and
I hear the noise.

I have made the changes you suggested and more. I went back into Depot and downloaded their versions of Mixer, MPlayerGUI, and the mplayer from your link. It still crackles. I was not able to find the MPlayerGui 1.40 I used 1.33. Oh yes I am using the rear audio outputs. I also confirmed that it crackles in both earphones. I also noticed that it seems to crackle more the higher the sound. I am watching a 1966 Blues at Newport and Skip James' is very high. There is still crackling when he is just plays guitar but it seems quieter.

I have almost the exact setup as Redfox.. But the sound is connected
to a HiFi stereo amplifier as a difference.
I have no crackling since.. Well I can't almost remember when I had
crackling before.
No crackling before, during or after boot. It's sounds almost perfect
now.
I have the latest drivers, UBoot, OS components and versions of audio
programs installed.

DaveAE has IMHO done an incredible job on these drivers with this,
IMO sh**ty, hardware.
