I like the special effects Paul.

Hopefully the OS was running on a 600MHz G3. GUI looks a tad slow, bit like an Swing applet! This should improve when the graphics.library is native PowerPC code.

The A1 was an XE G4 running at 800Mhz

As for running slow, I suppose that depends on what you are comparing with, after using Windows for the last 5 years, currently Windows XP, this does not seem at all slow to me, clicking on icons is very responsive, OK, some drawers take a second to display all the icons, but the very moment you double click, they start to open.

Yes, agreed, also note that nothing in this demonstation used JIT, add to this that we are still in "debug mode" with info being sent to the serial port slowing things down.

Bear in mind that this is an Alpha version, I have every confidence that the final release will not disappoint you.

Thanks for putting this video together. Very nicely done!

I found myself watching this on my AmigaOne and wishing I had OS4 in front of me right now.

Cheers!

Not so worried about the drawer opening time as the computer has to do a "dir" with alpha disk drivers. Its when the applications redraw after loading. I sort of expected near instantaneous update. Its more like 68030 MUI speed.

Anyway I am not complaining as what you just said it is running alpha and debug code (plus in hi-res 24 or 32 bit color).

Besides, when I click on an icon on my PC, my hard disk usually has a fit for a few seconds.

Anyway, can't wait to see it in Bath next month.

You are so right. And also the IDE UDMA is not implemented yet. That will also help. I can tell you from our user group meeting a bit over a week ago that OS4 feels very responsive, even in it's Alpha state. None of that chattering / grinding hard drive noise for 30 seconds before you start to notice things happening. Even with the few times I saw the "lag" in window movement, it didn't feel like it slowed down from a user standpoint. Not to me anyway. To me, it really just felt like you missed a couple of frames of animation, and nothing more.

I cannot help but to compare this 800MHz machine with OS4 against a 2~3GHz Windows machine that grinds to a halt when an application hangs... And just try opening a network configuration window in XP and have a problem with the network settings. The entire OS becomes completely unresponsive for 40-50 seconds. Horrible! Not even a CTRL+ALT+DEL will work until it gets good and ready to let go of that failing task. Then it has to reset the whole desktop and reload all running tasks... just because of a failed network connection.

If you haven't been able to make it to one of the shows to try for yourself, I highly recommend it.

I support that idea. better than listening to a piece of music that has nothing to do with the os itself.

I have only just realised this video was in existence!!
It's downloading now anyway, I am interested to see what it's like.
No doubt the OS has improved a LOT since this video was made, but it will still be interesting to see here on my broadband equipped eMac G4

@HopperJF

I don't know if you've spotted this, but lots more vids are available if you go to the media page rather than direct to the file :
http://www.amigaoneproductions.co.uk/media.htm

Hope you like what you see

I'm downloading the MPEG now, I haven't seen it yet.

It had better not be another trick like what Bodie C15 did in another thread!

Wow this is an old thread!

As AmigaOneProductions says, be sure to check out his later videos.

(looks like you all had fun at the big OS4 bash)

The vid is downloading very slowly. I've only seen about 15% of it so far, but I'm already impressed with what I've seen, particularly the paper aeroplane effect!

I should see some more of your vids, but I can't afford to if they're that big. I should get broadband, except there is no broadband in my village yet!

You can see some of my Amiga-generated animations here. click on the Library button under the streaming media window, select "search by genre," select "animation," and see if you can guess which anims are Amiga-generated!
