@nexus

the IB crashes are due some problem with the 68K emulation (often ibrowse network related)

About Aweb, you have to copy in Env-Archive: (AOS4:Prefs/Env-Archive/)

If you copy them only in Env: at the next reboot are lost.

@Framiga

IIRC, IBrowse network crashes were bugs in ibrowse not the 68k emulation; however, i thought they were all fixed by the time 2.4 was released. Certainly they were all fixed in the betas since the 2.4 release.

Then again, i'm using it on my AmigaOne with onboard networking, and A4000 with RTL8029, so i don't know if its an X-Surf related problem you're having.

@xeron

Ibrowse crashes are due to 68k MUI libraries.

Check that you have te latest PPC MUI libraries and all should be ok.

Thank you,

@NutsAboutAmiga

yes, of course, but I don't know what exact libraries i have to install.
I wonder, why these libraries weren't part of the latest AOS4classic update?

greetings,
nexus

seen that i don't have any "crash" under MOS for PuP, and very rare DSI under AmigaOS4 ibrowse network ...

is not me to have "problems" with the patched x-surf.device, is nexus

I'm using/testing huge net apps using far more connections than IB uses!

@ nexus

reduce the number of IB network conection to 8-10 (whatever internet provider you have)

IB Preferences/Settings> Network> Max. number of connections:

It should be possible to download the latest MUI libraries using AmiUpdate

No OS4 system is complete without this fantastic little application

yes, indeed a nice app. I`ve installed it and installed all updates. Now, let`s see if the new MUI-libs help to prevent IBrowse/x-surf.device from crashing. thumbs up!

What I don`t "like" about AmiUpdate is, that you don`t know anymore where everything is installed. So you lose the control where and how it is installed, don`t you? Moreover, if an update for program is going to be installed you cannot really "know" if really the programm will be updated, can`t you?. But well, i have not yet read the documentation. So perhaps I`m completely wrong

Thanks all for the help. I appreciate it very much!

at least glquakeWOS (see: http://www.soft3dev.net/pages/glquake_e.php ) works very well (but don't install the sky_boxes, that doesn't work here).

But you have to give quake enough memory (but not too much, means not more than you have in your machine installed. Then quake refuses to startl) and you have to use ahi. I use the following parameters (as far as i remember. When i'm at home, i can revise the parameters):

stack 1000000
glquakeWOS -mem 48 -ahi -nolan -width 640

(-width 800 works fine as well, but needs more memory. Unfortunatly, with my A4000 and 128MB Ram, I only can spend around 48MB Ram. After starting AOS4, I have around 77MB free. But quake seems to need more than the amount specified with the parameter "-mem". If i specify "-mem 56" then workbench shows "(!) minus -1.432.354 Ram" free If i specify "-mem 64", quake only shows a grey screen as it can't get all memory it wants to have to start).

Most anoying thing here: The really cool Quake-AddOn "Malice" doesn't work with glquake. It works without "gl" but then you cannot enter some secret areas in Malice which require gl. So you will never see those cool "Tomb Raider" like girls who wanna kill you

greetings,
nexus.

MUI PPC Libraries aren't installed by AmiUpdate, they are only retrieved.

You will have to install them by hand after they have been downloaded by AmiUpdate (check RAM:AmiUpdate after complete downloading of MUI Libraries). You'll see 3 drawers in each MUI Libraries downloaded (68k, OS4 et MorphOS), select the ones in the OS4 drawer and copy them to MUI:Libs/mui

All shoud be ok then.

By the way, to answer your question about where AmiUpdate installs everything, AmiUpdate doesn't update a software that was not installed first by hand. And since you know where you installed your softwares, no point for AmiUpdate to say where it is updating them since you already know where you have installed them previously.

A last, concerning GlQuake, an OS4 version does exist, so no point using the WarpOS version (check here).

Yes, true. I did this already as AmiUpdated told me to install these by hand.

Ok, thanks. But then there must be an assign in user-startup, right? Otherwise, AmiUpdate cannot know about an already installed app?

Yes, but it works poorly on my machine. It's damn slow and there are a lot of grafik errors so it is in fact not usable.

GlquakeWOS on the countary is nearly too fast and there are only grafik glitches in the sky (probably due to the missing sky_boxes, that doesnt work with glquake{AOS4|WOS})

nexus

Starting from beta 10, it's possible to use skyboxes for the sky rendering routine, download one of the sky_boxes packages and unpack it to the ID1 directory, then from the console type:

@m3x

As you can see, i posted that link to glquake a view entries above. So, i'm aware of these sky_box-package. But on my AOS4-classic-machine, quake refuses to start with these sky_boxes extracted to the ID1-directory.

There is an error message due to this sky_boxes. Something like "cannot load gfx format". I can't remember exactly what the problem is, but i can post it here tonight after re-producing the error.

greetings,
nexus

P.S. With AOS3.9 the sky_boxes and the gl-version of the (briliant) Quake-AddOn Malice work without problems. Only on AOS4, both doesn't work.

I noticed that many old programs that worked fine on OS3 started crashing when run on OS4 event hough they "should" run fine. The solution was sometimes the stack!

Many programs have set in their icons a 4kB stack. This often causes a stack overflow when run on OS4, especially for MUI programs!

If you copied old 68k programs over to OS4, try doubling the stack size in their icons and try again.

Ranger doesn't kill application, its process managment is few intuitive:

-when you go in process tab there is a list tree of processes, each node is opened, it should be close by default;
-process list tree (and all other lists tree) is not reactive to mouse whell;
- to send a CTRL+C to a process you must do more steps that scout:
a) select a process;
b) press on signal button to open window signals;
c) press on a signal you want send;
d) press "signal" button;
The Break signal should be easy accessible;

- you have to click on refesh button of each tab to see current system situation, instead Ranger should be real time;

-Ranger should give the choose to user for choosing how he wants see list of processes and the choose of with tab open in foreground (for example I would processes tab in foreground);

Snoopy....Snoopy is primitive, on OS4 is the olny program which use Topaz font, in the 21th century is something of obscene..., it's slow, in fact if you open a program snoopy continues to write access to functions/files for many times, while snoopdos is "in real time" with the program you have opened.
Another picturesque choose by snoopy in the 21th century is to see a menu with 21 submenu, each submenu contains up to 20 voices... one of important rules given from Software Engineering is to mantain simple and short menus, with few voices, especially if it is a submenu. All that enabling menu voices should be in a window...
There are things which are long experimented by who has gone before us, all famous programs... these programs became successful for their features and how they show them...this way to show features became actual standards and a 21th user is prepared to see a kind of way to show these features, it's simple.
If you want experiment new approach experiences for user you should do it other context because these ones are just experiences by somebody/something which has gone bebore you and which now is a standard...
And surely a mail of snoopy author can be useful for users instead to write on forum... ;)

@all

to summarise:

1) indeed, my glquake parameters are:

stack 1000000
glquake -mem 48 -width 640 -ahi -nolan

if sky_boxes_1 is extracted to ID1-directory, glquake doesn't start at all or there are heavy gfx-distortion (everywhere but not in the sky) and in the quake-console are error-messages written, like "couldn't load env/gfx/sky_up" etc.

I couldn't reproduce the error message (in the amiga console), i wrote above.

(qlquakeWOS works amazingly fine, qlquakeAOS4 doesnt work at all, quakeAOS4 (without gl) works fine)

2) indeed, AWeb and Ibrowse work now fine with OS3.x-Settings copied to envarc: or the updated MUI-Libs respectively.

3) remains:
* the rare gfx-glitches in on the Workbench (without problematic consequences)
* and the non-working screensaver modules
* (and the not-working cd32-pad/joystick in Wipeout2097 ).

Could some other user with A4000 and OS4 test this screenblanker issue? Here, the screenblanker doesn't refresh the screen correctly within the first minute and crashes soon after that (without GR, but simply everything is stuck and you have to reboot).

Thank you all, guys!
