@exec

I fully understand you. You need more control and faster HW to do your stuff. I would also like to have more modern HW and more modern apps like fruity/renoise/ableton/cubase etc. But that doesnt mean i cant do the stuff i like on my setup. I do have 3 HW synthesizers. Not all people afford. Some people use hd-rec with the builtin softsynthesizer. Some people uses pc with uae and hd-rec on it to get more power for alot of different reverbs and such. But then if you have uae on pc you would rather use more modern pc apps. But some people just like to use "under amiga".

People have different needs

The possibility of viewing, maybe even modifying, certain fileformats in AmigaOS is nice, but won't change the "hobby OS" status of AmigaOS. This would only change if the same software would be also available for AmigaOS. However, this is unlikely to happen since the companies cannot justify to port such software for just a tiny bunch of users.

@Kicko

That`s hobby you are talking about! I also said that a hobby operating
system is the right definition. I want to use it professionally, in a real
studio where I work. I want to have a rack box with a old Amiga logo on it, with a
non hobby but professionally orientated Amiga operating system with a
tons of applications on it... But??? What could I say... that are only my
wishes... If only it was not so... With Audiomaster, digibooster, tb303emu,
bars & pipes, octamed, protracker and those newer "HD record" app, what can
I do? Can I record 32 tracks and do the ruff mix with "insert" effects in realtime?
Can I edit in 5.1, 6.1, 7.2, 10.2? Do I have support for actual DSP plugin accelerators
like Duende, UAD?

Amiga was once an audio dream machine, today it is an audio retro toy...
Everything i learned about audio was over all of my Amigas... 500, 600, 1200, 4000...
But now, we are practically in 2010...trackers are all dead in professional studios...
VST/RTAS/TDM is here, it is a audio standard.. not some 8bit 8SVX sample
players, nor anything that shares tracker concept ... Sequencing is the
actual "ground zero"... Time to build some new apps on that grounds...
If I only know how to code, but I don`t...

VST is out there...

I wanna believe !

So, anyone given-up yet, after realising that we can't even agree on the definition of "hobby OS"? I mean we've had 9 pages so far, so that might give a clue...

Actually I was pointing to the fact you do not disclose where you are from! And yet you despise secrecy? Just trying to lighten the tone of the discussions or divert another Amiga train wreck in the making.

I havent said your wrong :) Everything is there. Thats today and will evolve even further. I have heard some examples from your stuff and it sounded really more wider, bigger.

If my cousins studio project succed we would use mac with probably Ableton Live or something else. What i describe is for sure "home studio" as you call it hobby, as it is. But sometime i want to think it as professional too even without using topnotch stuff. I have done some lame remixes to one artist and have been asked for others too but i dont want to do it as i dont even give myself time for my own projects. If i would do remixes for them then i think i could call it more then hobby ?

But sure as you say, you would like to have amiga @ work in the studio and thats not possible. You cant even bring the work home to continue even if you had an amiga homestudio as the apps arent compatible and not uptodate with the standards.

Some days i feel like a hobbit other days like a pro.

I just want it to come back... nothing more....nothing less...
I remember the days when i played some of my digibooster
tracks on trance party's. Today, it is ableton instead of DB
with APC 40 hooked onto it ;)

Hopefully we will see the light on the end of this dark eternity ..

I like the "groups" where you can group several channels into one and then ungroup whenever you want in latest Ableton live. I would like that in hd-rec too.

@Exec
Hobby OS and Hobby Use due to lack of updated applications are two very different concepts.
The fact that people make Hobby use of an OS, that is behind due to a series of unfortunate events, does not make of that os an "hobby OS" unless it was abandoned software now developed by the fans.
AmigaOS is starting steady development again only now and in current state it is an outdated (but actively developed) commercial OS that sees hobby use from certain individuals.
Some do make money with it, does that make of Amiga OS an "ultra modern up to date OS"? NO, it is still an outdated OS (with many good features though) that in this case sees Professional Use from certain individuals.

So let me recap:

Is it still outdated? Yes

Is there people making a hobby out of it? Yes

Is there people making a professional use out of it? Yes

Is it still commercially and actively developed copyrighted software? Yes

Will it keep evolving bringing in all the modern features we want? Yes

@Polka
So your definition of Hobby OS is that unless Microsoft and Adobe bring in their software in, it will always be an Hobby OS?
MacOS for a long time lacked the same Windows applications but was professionally used in many fields.
Modern features make a modern professional OS and as long as we will get those in 4.2/4.5/5.0 (or whatever they decide to call it) who cares if you do your PDFs with Adobe Acrobat and I do them with Page Stream, or if you do your 3D models with Maya and I do them with Blender.

No, the purpose of use (hobby) is for me what makes it an hobby OS. So these are not different concepts, but one is the reason for the other.
The fact that it is still commercially being developed doesn't make it any less "hobbyish". Why would this be a bad thing anyway? There are many companies targeting the hobby sector, just think about sports and model making.

Quote:

That was because MacOS had several specialised (professional) apps that were not available for Windows (particularly DTP). AmigaOS has none of them and hence does not see much professional use.

That's not what I meant. I can't do anything with AmigaOS in my field of work. Not a single application is available and this won't change since no companies could justify to make a port for 7 sales. Heck, they even stopped Solaris support in the last version.
