Yep, it all adds up to a whole lot more than "those nobodies ordered a couple hundred of our boards". One would have to be very biased to think that this relationship is in any way one-sided.
That said, I do hope that they lower prices a fair bit by the time it ships. The economy is not in a state where a lot of people can shell out that much dough for a hobby, and it would be a shame to see a-eon pricing themselves out of the market.

In regards to the CPU, and checking the Varisys website for products they are selling, and basing your assumptions on this, I say this: Trevor says in his video that they had a CPU partner first who then recommended a number of resources to develop a new board for A-Eon. A-Eon chose Varisys for the fit... he specifically says that Varisys wasn't too big and would not steamroll A-Eon's design decisions.
So they had already settled on the CPU and possibly arranged a partnership, BEFORE they hooked up with Varisys.
