The big problem I have with DosBox on my Sam440 is not so much speed as getting CD based games to find the CD player and designate it as D:\ Can anybody tell me what the correct entry is, in the config file to do this? _________________ When in trouble, fear or doubt, run in circles, scream and shout. |

| @fishy_fis Eventually very old games are released for Open Source consumption, or they become abbandonware and either replacement engines or leaked source code is used to port them on Linux or wherever. Titles are added all the times. As for Dos versions which are better than Playstation...hardly. All 3D games can run at higher resolution on PC but they failed to provide higher resolution bitmapped textures back in the PSX days (the PC versions use the same low res bitmaps only the geometry is higher res as it's recalculated on the fly) however emulators can do the same with the PSX versions too (end of better versions there, actually Tomb Raider on ePSXe with filters looks better than it did on PC). As for new games, you won't be playing DeadSpace 2 any time soon on Aros, so go get a console or a Win7 PC like the rest of US hurry!
@Realize I saw them both at Amigans.net in the game discussions, I believe kas1e ported both, I didn't tried them myself as I am a 2D pixel graphics lover (specially of the non-pre rendered variety) you can check there for further infos.

I don´t have OS4, but I think it should be the same on all platforms (however, I read there were some problems with OS4 port and CD-ROM support).
In DosBox console: mount d CD0: -t cdrom
For some games I use batch file (eg. for Daggerfall). This is my .bat file (in Windows):
dosbox -c "mount c E:\pchry\puvodnipchry\dosgames mount -freesize 1000." -c "mount d E:\pchry\puvodnipchry\dosgames\dfcd -t cdrom -label Daggerfall" -c "C:" -c "CD DAGGER" -c "DAGGER" -conf dosboxDaggerfall.conf
Drive c is mounted as E:\pchry\puvodnipchry\dosgames Drive d is mounted as E:\pchry\puvodnipchry\dosgames\dfcd (it is cdrom: -t cdrom; its name is Daggerfall: -label Daggerfall" another commands are used to run Daggerfall directly from Windows, "-conf dosboxDaggerfall.conf" uses configuration file created for Daggerfall.
I hope it will help - I don´t know if these commands work OK in the OS4 version of DosBox. |

It would be interesting to try DosBox on "classic" hardware (with 603e/604e). |
I tried that last year, and was really surprised by its speed. I was able to play Settlers 1 just fine on my 603e/240mhz. much faster than PC-Task which can just about run Windows3.11/Minesweeper. Ofcourse I tried Win95, too.... ;) |

| Okay then, I'll revise the list, last one was just a bunch of random titles. How about Daggerfall, Scream1, Screamer2 (great games btw), Syndicate Wars, Settlers2, System Shock (swesome game), Warlords2 and 3, Ultima Underworld2, KKND, Blood, Death Racer, Fatal Racing, Theatre of Pain, Theme Park (by far away best version), Magic Carpet, Dark Forces, Rebel Assault, as well as about a million flight/space sims. Long story short there's plenty of good DOS games a person misses out on with a 386-486ish spec system. In fact for my tastes that was the pinnacle (94-98ish) of pc gaming.... the era where there was finally enough grunt in pcs for developers to do some interesting things beyond what was available elsewhere.

You are correct! I got it to load, but it's too slow to play. Still, it was probably an impressive game in 1994.

The thing is that even if you want to tell people to install AROS to play old PC games the thing is that you can do that on a PC with Windows or Linux as well and at least IMO AROS doesn't run natively well enough yet.
Also when I don't use the PC I prefer to use AOS 4 over AROS and actually lots of games run very well in DOSBox. Sure more speed for an emulator is always good but I don't think that the need is that big.
There's also the issue with time. I play modern games on the PC, I play games on the Wii and I don't have time to play anything else. Quake 1-3 already runs natively on AOS 4 so no need for DOSBox there, not for Duke3D either.
Actually I don't even know what your point is? Install AROS so you can run old PC games faster? Well... no. |

Point ? I was simply answering the question in the topic, which I have an interest in due to the fact Ive actually worked on DosBox and did AROS and OS3.x ports (I also did an OS4.x version some years ago before anyone released a version (which I sent to ppl like jahc and outcast, who will confirm this). After I did it was suggested that extra speed in Dosbox was redundant cos of psx emulators. I disagreed. Last edited by fishy_fis on 26-May-2011 at 07:52 AM. No you jumped in explaining that DOSBox is faster in AROS.
Also "Still though if people are happy with the results theyre getting then good luck to them."
Good luck? Ehm... thanks. Last edited by hotrod on 26-May-2011 at 07:53 AM.

| Youre reading things that arent there. Yes I said my AROS version is faster, but on the back of the available code paths, which I also wrote. As for "if people are happy with the results theyre getting good luck to them",... not sure how you read that as negative. Im paraphrasing a pretty common saying.

Arena needs at least 9000 CPU cycles (or rather 12000) to be playable in full details. Yes, it was nice game with many great concepts, but its GFX was (and is) terrible. I like much more Ambermoon. |

In that case, how is it positive? Yes I see it as a negative comment. Why are you wishing people good luck? Good luck with what? |

Im not sure where youre from, so it's not impossible there's a language barrier thing here, but to say, "good luck to them" the way I have means something along the lines of, "if theyre happy/content then Im happy for them".
I wasnt actualy implying there's any luck needed :)

| @fishy_fis It's not that if the list is large it makes sense. Of the games in your second list there are some which will play just fine on the X1000, others that will be ported natively (eventually, just like Baldurs Gate and Ultima8) and others which are uninteresting at best. Let's not forget that it's in titles like Return TCWolfenstein, Racer, and better (ie:Doom3 and so on) that people want's to see native ports the most. Overall there won't be anything in particular worth crying about as the games will be avaialble in one form or another, AND/OR a far better game in the same genre will be available to play. _________________ SamFlex Complete 800Mhz System + AmigaOS 4.1 Update 4 Amiga 2000 DKB 2MB ChipRam GVP G-Force040 Picasso 2 OS3.9 BB2 AmigaCD 32 |

You probably noticed the documented way doesn't work on recent OS4 DOSBox releases (I don't know if somebody ever adapted that for Amiga). If the CD filesystem is flat, completely without directories, I don't know how it'd work, but otherwise you can do something like this: Quote:
mount d cd0:dir// -t cdrom -usecd 0
|
-usecd is optional, I don't know what capability, if any, it adds.
Actually, mount e progdir: mounts at one level up from DOSBox dir (here and now), too._________________ : AmigaOneXE (unmod.) 750FX/512 MB +stuff & AmigaOS 4.(0|1) : A1200/68060&96MB/SCSI/EM1200-Voodoo3 & OS 3.5 : A500/1MB : Pegasos (ff) 512 MB & MorphOS Praise seitan. |

Ambermoon had some of the best music for a game of that era. It was very atmospheric and really fit the scenes well. (I've got RTF IV tickets, so I'm in a medieval frame of mind. )
