I think that pretty much sums up why some of us are still here. I just simply prefer the Amiga way of doing things.

@cha05e90

I would not think that was funny, cause it could be delivered like that without any use for other OS.
Amiga forever licence should should also be included and e-uae set up in a nice way.
AROS running hosted should also be set up.

If they like to use AROS native, I would be very pleased, but it would require another OS together with it. It would also make trouble for C-USA. People would start to make all kind of stupid questions about it.

I think the first solution is the best one. Everything will work out of the box. Put a AROS icon on the desktop together with a Amiga icon for e-uae.

This is the way most AROS users run AROS anyway.

If they make good money, they could start making AROS better and maybe one day, they could replace the Linux distro with AROS :D

@nikosidis

It did occur to me.
It would kinda negate the need to develop native drivers also.
But is that scenario really at all compelling, when it runs slower than native, and when the host OS has access to all the apps you could ever hope to need?
I mean if AROS cannot realistically run on an equal footing as any other OS on the system, is it worth proceeding with it?

We wouldn't remame AROS, it's not ours to rename....
Perhaps create a distro we could call whatever...
My thinking was "Commodore AROS".

@BigBentheAussie: "Commodore Workbench" would attract a lot more people than "Commodore AROS"...

My thinking was run UAE through AROS.
At least it would give people more of a reason to boot into AROS for the retro goodness....
We would position AROS as a portal for everything retro.

You don't think AROS devs deserve a credit?
We would be just creating a flavour.... like any one of the "buntu" derivatives.

But that's on the credit page. It's not as if the credits were to be reseted, it would be known that was AROS based,

For a start for c-usa I would run AROS hosted. First of all, have you tried that ?
In some cases it is actualy faster than AROS native.
Sure nothing is like running native, but the Linux hosted version is damed good.

In the background c-usa could work with the AROS team in some way.

This new commodore amigas is something you like to bring to the marked in not to distant future I guess.

Good idea to use e-uae inside aros for classic emulation.
Then there will be one icon on desktop.

They do. And they would get, much like Ubuntu gave credit to Linux... Don't you think ?

yeah. I would not worry much about the AROS name. It is just like Linux name. No distro is called Linux.
Could just be in small letters, powered by AROS, or xxxx- AROS distro.

My vote would go to Workbench if it's legal/possible to do so.

It's a interesting conundrum.

A "software architecture" as defined in the settlement is not protectable by copyright other than as embodied in documentation (e.g. the documentation / specification can be copyrighted) or in an actual program (in which case that embodiment of the architecture - the specific software - will be protected, but not the architecture itself).

You can't copyright an idea, thankfully.

And copyright protection of the actual software requires the code to be very similar in implementation.

But note that the line you quoted does not say anything about copyrighted by whom. It would certainly seem to apply to AROS, but that does not in any way imply that AROS is infringing.
....

Did you read page 28's part b context?

.... For the avoidance of doubt with respect to the exclusive nature of the license granted to Hyperion for the Software...

@Leo

Who owns the Workbench trademark?
I'm pretty sure it is Amiga Inc.
We could probably just drop Commodore from the title and just call it Workbench....
Is that what you want? Really?
Don't you think we're getting enough heat over AROS as it is right now without bringing the issue of A.Inc's involvement into this further?
We wanted to do AROS well before we contacted Amiga Inc. but now I'm not so sure we can even proceed.

@BigBentheAussie

I hope AROS natively.

The idea is to improve AROS and have the hardware running software in a fast and enjoyable way. UAE inetgration is only first step, as there's WIP regarding direct emulation on AROS itself:
EMUMIGA.COM

And AROS hosted was always intended for AROS development itself not replacement.

As for AROS lacking behind AmigaOS, it's not true regarding a lot of areas, what it does in most is require more polishment and better debuging. Of course there are areas which is severely handicaped such as printing and some form of memory protection... I guess it's really those areas that are really lacking.

Other than that USB support is better, Networking connection is wider (Cable/WI-FI/USB modem - 3G devices...)... 3D support is better also, although not so wider as it should be regarding the platforms it's running.

What AmigaOS is a more directioned, well developed, polished and consistent effort. And it shows in a evident form.

Don't do AROS then, just do a linux distro called workbench. workbench is not a brand, it is like desktop. Call it Ubuntu - workbench.
Then put AROS inside it to run hosted and for classic emulation.

Hyperion can never get anyway with that. The OS you supply is Linux (ubuntu)
Whatever programs is inside that OS they don't have anything to do with.

Noone in the world have used AROS more than me.
I like it a lot, but is not ready to be a real alternative OS. No Amiga or amiga like OS is.
This is why the hosted solution is the best alternative. At the same time the hardware c-usa supply must be made ready with driver etc.. to meet the users that wish to install AROS native. That should be quite easy to do. They could even leave a partition on HDD drive blank for future AROS native installation. 20GB should be plenty for AROS. Noone would even notice 20GB with the disk space today.
Then they would neither have any legal trouble either. Noone can deny people to install whatever they like on their computer.

I don't think Workbench would be legally feasible...

How bout a hybrid of Kickstart and workbench... Kickbench

Make a custom linux distribution and include AROS hosted with it. Alternatively, you could always point out in the user manual that your computers are AROS friendly and make a small user guide as how to install and run AROS. One more thing you would need are the drivers, but those could be hosted at AROS.org.

@WolfToTheMoon

haha, we said almost the same :D

I could make a distro for c-usa with everything ready for native users. No problemo

They could even supply the cd or dvd with the Commodore Amigas.

As long as it is not installed on the hardware, who could deny them that.
