Its use in competing product could be disputed but Workbench is not a trademark.

the infos about workbench 5.0 sounds to me like it could be a another linux distro. the features that are listed, like ms office compatible office suit (open office maybe?), are not available to aros. by the way the pictures of the new so called amiga computers looks realy great. could be cool for people that want to buy a special wintel pc with a nostalgic touch in a modern look.

there had been public talk a couple of months ago about the possibility of commodore USA putting together a linux distro with a modified look-and-feel for its amiga-branded PCs. which strikes me as a nice touch, actually. with their business model -- using the commodore and amiga trademarks on OEM hardware in custom/semi-custom cases -- there is really no need to do anything but bundle windows or some variant of linux and call it a day.

i just really hope they do not call it 'workbench 5.0' or anything related to the actual amigaOS, which is a totally different software platform and a touch misleading in my view. and in any case i doubt their target customers would care one way or another.

@karmelito

starting this thread strikes me as part of a viral marketing campaign. did someone from commodore USA alert you to the site, or did you just find it on your own; and if the former, would you please tell us who told you about it?

if they do it the right way and make this linux os look and feel like the original amiga os it could be cool and it could bring linux os to more normal/home users. but i must say that i dont believe it until i see it. only to rename ubuntu in worbench 5.0 would be very lame.

Seeing the C64 in real make me feel I want one. I hope that it can handle a Catweasel.

As a journalist you've to be faster :), it was obvious that the site will go away.

@eliyahu

I'm not a C-USA employee, nobody tell me about the site I just discovered it by using the show source function of my browser.
I knew that the site will be put online soon meaning that it should be somewhere.
To be honest we could have found it sooner by looking that whois, its as old as 2004.

Incredibly naive.

Linux won't be brought to any home by two guys in Florida slapping a theme on Ubuntu running on a generic x86 box. Nobody knows Amiga anymore these days, nor do they know Commodore, so the branding won't do a damn thing either. It's time that bubble is burst within this community.

A-eon knows this, and that's why they're doing the smart thing: focussing on those that do know the Amiga, and won't settle for a generic x86 box running a themed Ubuntu that you can buy (or build) cheaper just about anywhere else.

@Thom_Holwerda

Another approach will be doing a Linux kernel and everything else Amiga.
Like SkyOS approach. (others too that I forgot the name, clone of BeOS...)
This will eliminate the painful task of writing good device drivers.
Who really care about Exec?

@kamelito

You say that like it's trivial. Considering these guys were flaunting AROS until recently, it means they would've begun such an endeavour only very recently. In other words, the products would be years and years away. Highly unlikely.

I've been running OSNews for almost 7 years now, and I've seen many a naive starry-eyed use-Linux-as-base proposal come by, and they've all amounted to absolutely bloody nothing, and through my superpower of clairvoyance I can predict that any such endeavour by C-USA will be just as pointless and fruitless.

Many people seem to think that you can just slap whatever you want on Linux in single rainy day, but it just doesn't work that way. It takes considerable planning, manpower, and dedication to do so - just look at how long it's taken Google (Android) and Palm (webOS), and how long it's taking Access (ALP), and even goddamn Intel+Nokia (MeeGo) are taking ages.

Feet, please meet ground.

Mods!

I do not see where names of x86 clone computer GUIs or what some company
thinks might be a good marking plan has to do with General Technology.
And most certainly legal arguments and opinions of what some x86 clone
seller is doing can only fit into Free For All.

@Thom_Holwerda

sorry but im not naive. i know that they cant sell millions of this amiga labeld computers. and im not a big fan of cusa because i think aeon and hyperion will bring the only true new amiga computers and that these new labeld x86 pcs could hurt their business.
but i must say that i like the idea of a amiga styled pc wich can dual boot a amiga styled linux and windows. but as i write in my last post i dont believe anything from cusa until i see a product from them wich i can buy.

PS sorry for my bad english.

@Mechanic

It was decided in a fairly recent poll that any topic concerning C=USA should be in General Technology. I suggest you stop trying to point out anything about it to the moderators, the end result will be that you're restricted instead. Not what you want, not what we want.

Sorry for sarcasm, but the clue is in the words "x86", "computer" and "GUI". I don't want C=USA to do such a thing either, but unfortunately you just can't close your eyes and wish the topic away.

Yeah, like a band with none of the original members.

It's The Beatles! Mitch, Ricky, Simon and Baz!

The main thing is that the music plays again, after so many years of
tribal dances... Looks like the notes are the same...
Obviously the "band" has the identical instruments...
It`s better that music than the distorted tribal dances from the depths of
Amazon forest that were played all these years ;)

@X86_Amigist

The notes are not the same. This isn't a covers band, more like the Velvet Underground, circa 1973.

New members playing new songs, nothing interesting left besides the name.

I would think it's hard to slam a "new" band before hearing them play first? Give it a fair shake before you condemn it.
